How Is This EVER Okay?

Filed in National by on November 12, 2010

Unbelievable.

In a statement about the meeting acquired by Politico and Ron Kampeas at the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Cantor’s office said that:

Eric stressed that the new Republican majority will serve as a check on the Administration and what has been, up until this point, one party rule in Washington. He made clear that the Republican majority understands the special relationship between Israel and the United States, and that the security of each nation is reliant upon the other.

Kampeas argued that he “can’t remember an opposition leader telling a foreign leader, in a personal meeting, that he would side, as a policy, with that leader against the president” — an argument which Cantor’s office disputed. “The claim you make below simply isn’t in there [in the office’s statement],” Cantor spokesperson Brad Dayspring wrote to Kampeas.

Un-flippin-believable.

And that’s the problem with politicians trying to pander to any group. Cantor is Jewish, but that doesn’t give him a pass for his statement.

  2. Dana says:

Kampeas can’t remember? Think back to the 1980s and the ridiculous Boland Amendments, designed to undercut President Reagan’s support for the contras.

  3. a.price says:

He is also the type of Shanda that gives the anti Israel crowd so much ammo.
Eric Cantor, you are a disgrace. you were a disgrace when you let cops beat up someone who opposed your political party, you are a disgrace now.

Isn’t that just a reiteration of longstanding bipartisan US policy on Israel? I must be missing something here. You could throw a dart in any direction and hit worse statements from Cantor.

  5. anon40 says:

    I agree w/ anon.

Our Israeli policy is idiotic. We kow-tow to the House of Saud because they have the oil we need. Israel has nothing we need, but we bend over backwards for the Israelis because U.S. politicians are afraid of angering American Jews.

  6. Republican David says:

Cantor is right. I, too was going to point out that Jim Wright met with Daniel Ortega and sent David Bonar, Ron Dellums and others to meet with him in his nation when we were waging a proxy war.

Israel is an ally which has long had strong support on the Hill. Clinton was rebuffed by the Congress with his policies and the Congress passed a law recognizing Jerusalem as the capitol. We could think about Taiwan, Cambodia, Laos, and many other examples. You can’t remember because you either don’t pay attention or you are about 2 years old.

A lot of people don’t pay attention, but they usually don’t pontificate on the subject.

  7. Republican David says:

The real point of this post must be the admission that this administration is anti-Israel and abandoning the longstanding bi-partisan tradition of support. This administration is catering to the Muslim world at its expense.

  8. a.price says:

The president is the leader of foreign policy. To speak as a decision maker to a foreign leader is flirting with treason. It is a breach of the constitution…. ya know, the one conservatives LOVE so much. It was wrong when Pelosi did it… even though it was in GWB’s lameduckhood.
Barack Obama has potentially 6 years left to be the commander in chief and head of state. Eric Cantor LITERALLY has no right to do what he did.

  9. a.price says:

“This administration is catering to the Muslim world at its expense.”

i dont have the blogging skills to pull it off but can someone PLEASE send this idiot clip after clip of his beloved Dubya “catering” to the muslim world.

David, i hope you wake up one day. I can understand your social conservative morals….i guess. But people like Eric Cantor are evil. Mitch the Turtle was telling BUsh to pull troops out WHILE he was calling Dems unamerican for asking for the same thing. These people do NOT speak for you, they use you.

So your objection to Cantor’s comments is because he “gives the anti Israel crowd so much ammo”, not that he is among, in Washington’s words, the “ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens, (who devote themselves to the favorite nation,)”

  11. a.price says:

i knew you’d like that one.

    Republican David,

How does making war on Muslim countries constitute “catering”?

  13. Phil says:

Eh, more partisan crap. Pelosi did this 3 years ago in Syria.

  14. Ordinary Joe says:

Well, when you have an anti-Semite as president, it is perfectly appropriate to oppose his policy on Israel.

  15. Ordinary Joe says:

Besides, it wasn’t so long ago that you folks declared that siding against a president on foreign policy matters — even to the point of supporting enemy nations and terrorist organizations — constituted “dissent” and was therefore “the highest form of patriotism”. Were you lying then, or are you suggesting that siding with an American ally rather than an American president is somehow not “dissent” or that said dissent is somehow not “the highest form of patriotism” because it did not involve siding with America’s enemies?

  16. delacrat says:

    Ordinary Joke,

We are supporting Israel to the tune $3 billion annually.

When were we ever “supporting enemy nations and terrorist organizations ” to anywhere close to $3 billion annually?

  17. a.price says:

disagreeing with the president publicly and domestically and going behind the president’s back to make deals with foreign leaders are 2 completely different things. Eric Cantor usurped power.

Understood – I just don’t see what deal was made, or what Cantor said that disagreed with the President over Israel. What positions are in conflict?

I guess I am missing something.

  19. jason330 says:

On the bright side, at least we are out from under the tyranny of “one party rule in Washington.”

  20. donviti says:

where are those anti-semites that visit DL when you need em too?

  21. delacrat says:

Cantor ought to resign from the Senate … or at least register with the US State Dept as a foreign agent.

In other news, a ballot initiative to ban circumcision is making the rounds in the city of San Francisco. The pendulum swings in both directions.
