Statement From Tim Sheldon
We have requested an interview with Tim Sheldon but he is out of town this week. We have offered to do a phone interview but so far, Mr. Sheldon has not found the time yet. He did give permission to post his statements that he has sent to Democratic committee members and to the Progressive Democrats.
I have a long record of service to our party of a committee member, committee chair and now as an elected official. Over the years, I have supported Democratic candidates throughout our county and up & down our state. As an elected official, I have a proven track record of fiscal responsibility, fighting irresponsible growth and strong constituent service. As a candidate, I have shown that I understand and am willing to devote the time and energy it takes to win a competitive race.
We have many challenges ahead of us in the near future and I hope you will join me on our campaign. I would be honored to have your support for President of New Castle County Council. If I am fortunate enough to earn your support, I pledge that together we will continue to achieve success on the issues that matter most to our party and the people of New Castle County.
Here is Councilman Sheldon’s statement to PDD:
I would like to thank the Progressive Democrats for Delaware for the opportunity to present my background and ideas for the direction of our county. In addition, I also thank you for your hard work to promote core Democratic issues, values and candidates/elected officials who support these objectives.
Since I became an elected official in 2004, I have been determined to represent all citizens of New Castle County. I believe that my record as a council-person reflects this desire. A few items which immediately come to mind are:
the inclusion of equal opportunity language in one of my notable pieces of legislation, the Responsible Contractors Ordinance
my support of domestic partnership benefits
my work as a business representative and an activist for working people to ensure a living wage for all American workers
my sponsorship of ordinances which support everyone from senior citizens, to small businesses, to your average citizen
my record of taking my constituent’s opinions and concerns to heart and my work each & every day to represent them
As a Board member of the Delaware Solid Waste Authority, I am a major proponent of recycling. I was instrumental in bringing single stream recycling to the State of Delaware. After my suggestion, it was implemented statewide. This saves people time and energy with minimal impact to the DSWA.
Additionally, I am a firm advocate of renewable energy. I have suggested and continue to promote saving the methane gas and selling it to the treatment plant in Wilmington. I have also suggested that the City of Wilmington turn the sludge from our sewer system into a fertilizer bi-product with zero emissions to be used as an alternative energy. There are many innovative and modern ideas when it comes to renewable energy and I will continue to be the pioneer for implementation of such in New Castle County.
Tim Sheldon
The nominating convention is on Monday, November 22. The Republican nominee is supposed to be announced some time this week.
I wonder who wrote this for him. From what I hear from people in his district, he’s not exactly someone who knows how to communicate (read that “talk”.)
Geez, reading this, you’d think that, without the visionary leadership of Tim Sheldon, single-stream recycling would never have come to Delaware.
Call me skeptical, but that seems like just a wee bit of an overstatement to me. Is it true that he also invented the Internet?
Glad you reminded me of this, Bulo, because single stream recycling came to Wilmington while DSWA was still whinging about their costs for this (ignoring their costs to expand Cherry Island). But a great idea often ends up having many parents.
That last paragraph could use some clarification too. I’m guessing that he is talking about a sludge-to-energy process (capturing the methane from anaerobic digesters), but this does need some sorting out.
As I read it, Sheldon is taking credit for a lot of things that you’d expect to get passed when your party has an 11-2 majority in council, but he’s not telling us a whole lot about what he would do if he gets elected.
Also, fair to say that if he can’t explain his renewable energy ideas clearly, there’s reason to be skeptical about the clarity he’ll offer the public about his leadership.
Biggest question for any candidate: will you make all council meetings available to the public in real time via streamlining on the internet and then up in podcasts?
For Tim: you won’t vote to raise taxes and you won’t vote to lay off county employees. So how does the county continue to address its financial shortfall? Saying you will eliminate waste and make government more efficient will not be accepted as an answer.
Does anyone know if he has a website? I found the one for Bill Dunn but this was what came up first when I looked for Tim Sheldon. Thanks.
Will, I don’t think Mr. Sheldon has a website.
Just maybe we need to have some balance on the council. Absolute power corrupts. When the republicans had absolute power they messed things up in DC. When the democrats did recently, they did not make me proud.
Good governance requires some check and balance.
We are in crazy times with the imbalance created by both parties in bed with corporate wealth.
Great juxto posts today –
WaPo – Ezra Klein talks about 2011 being the year of bureaucrats creating the regulations arising out of last year’s reform bills and the rising numbers of lobbyists being hired to fight and influence the process by business interests.
And Politico has a post up about how Obama is tip-toeing around business interests hoping to get funding for his 2012 re-election campaign. http://politi.co/eRrI7B
