Hang Up and Drive

Filed in National by on January 3, 2011

If you didn’t know already, Delaware began it’s handheld cell phone ban while driving on January 2nd.

On July 6, 2010, Delaware Governor Jack Markell signed into law a bill banning the use of hand held cell phones, pagers, PDAs, blackberrys, laptops, games or portable computers while driving. Under the new law, which goes into effect January 2, 2011, drivers are not allowed to talk without using a hands-free device, read, write or send text messages, email or use the Internet while operating a motor vehicle.

If you get caught reading a email or reading this blog while operating a motor vehicle, it’s going to cost you $50. That would  be one expensive email.

    Worse state law of 2010

  2. anon says:

Glenn Erquhardt the host on WILM today. Guest Tom Kovach. We listeners of WILM have been discussing the fact that the station is becoming more and more right wing. John Watson has been taking the righties side of things over the past 6 weeks, while listeners were told “you can only call once a week”. Think the baggers are attempting to make blue Delaware red. Now we progressives only have Al in the morning and the lunatic fringe Jenson in the afternoon. If you dont think this isn’t a serious situation, think again. Many who listen are elderly, not computer literate and believe what they hear. Glenn is talking about ending “government run health care” the Faux talking point. Has his wife on who claims, “I was Forced to accept medicare”! No she wasnt this is the kind of hypocrisy we can see from the teabaggers.

  3. jpconnorjr says:

It’s a FOX station! That is all.

  4. Geezer says:

Actually, it’s a Clear Channel station.

  5. Actually you’re both right according to Wikipedia. It’s a Fox News Radio affiliated, Clear Channel-owned station. Fox News Radio is owned by FNC.

I wonder how vigorously they’ll enforce this new ban. Wilmington has had this ban for a year and it doesn’t seem to have any effect on the number of people talking on their phones behind the wheel (everybody), but the WPD looks (I have no data) to basically use the cell phone law to roust people they are looking at anyway.

  7. Dr. Crazy says:

I think some cop this morning was trying to pull me over for a ticket.

I’m not sure, since I was on the phone and not paying a whole lot of attention.

It might have been an ambulance.

Oh well, I guess I’ll have to find something else to do while driving. I wouldn’t call it a “hands free device”, but I think it’s still legal!

Wtf! Are you kidding me? People who do not believe what you believe are basically stupid? Ouch! Elderly people are stupid too? (I guess your parents, grandparents and and other citizens who fought wars for your freedom fit your description).

Btw, if the Progressive voice is so important to you, Start your own radio program! Oh, I forgot, you can’t because you’re either stupid, have nothing to say or don’t realize that the majority of Americans are not Progressives. Air America failed miserably for a reason.

  9. Joanne Christian says:

“Have you or anyone you know gotten a ticket yet?”–I don’t know–let me call around:)!!!!

  10. Jason330 says:

The guy who is 100% wrong about everything hates this law. ‘Nuff said.

  11. bamboozer says:

Once the revenue starts rolling in the ban will be enforced, vigorously. And to Republican David: Those of us who are tired of almost being hit, run over and stuck behind a weaving idiot applaud this bill.

  12. Another Mike says:

I once was rear-ended (not very hard, fortunately) by a nitwit who got out of her car and said she hadn’t seen me stop at a red light because she was on the phone with her boyfriend. I have no problem with this law.

  13. anon says:

My friend a hospice nurse received a call about a patient about to expire…they ticketed her…she got a $50 fine! This law is outrageous, at least they could have given permission for police, fire, nurses/doctors etc. the ability to prove their cell phone must be used in life/death situations. Who sponsored this nutty piece of crap.

  14. anon says:

Erqui and the hard right had a field day today on WILM. Not one regular caller bothered. Its tea time for WILM, and FAUX news. You only get one call a week, so they get away with all their lying, deceiving and false statments.

  15. Paratrooper18 says:

Okay anon. She is a hospice nurse, all of her patients are about to expire. What exactly constitutes an emergency for a hopsice nurse? My dad went through this and we called to leave messages when we had silly questions, and when he died. Other than that there was no emergencies.

  16. The Straight Scoop says:

Anon, please read the bill before railing against it. The bill specifically exempts the following: police, firefighters, EMTs, drivers reporting an accident or other emergency, employees using two-way radios to communicate with their employer, and Ham radio operators.

So there are exemptions for almost every kind of emergency personnel and for regular people to use it in life/death situations, as you suggested. Aside from nurses not being covered, I don’t see the outrage.

  17. pandora says:

I’m with you, p18. I have been through hospice with several loved ones and left messages for the hospice nurse often. One of the benefits of hospice is how they prepare everyone for what will happen. There really isn’t an emergency situation with hospice since there is no life saving treatment – only meds for comfort.

In two of my experiences with hospice, the nurse wasn’t present at the time of death – we didn’t even call her/him, because they had prepared us. Hospice is a wonderful service.

  18. Phil says:

I just wish that this law wasn’t required. I still dream about the day when common sense becomes common….

  19. Mercedes Marxist says:

Another stupid liberal law enacted by morons.

  20. Jason330 says:

How refreshing it would be if all Republicans were as libertarian as they pretend to be. …sigh…

  21. Frank says:

Love the wording of the poll.

    “Hands-free driving.”

No, I plan to use my hands when I drive.

  22. Melissa says:

Frank – Agreed, we should really be calling it the “Both Hands Driving Law.”

Of course, it could mean “hands free to do other things while driving,” if my experience on Rt 1 the past couple days is any indication.
