Superbowl Open Thread

Filed in National by on February 6, 2011

It’s time for the once-a-year event called the Superbowl. Use this thread to trash talk, cheer and jeer and give reviews of the commercials. Also, go Packers!

  1. Christine Aguilera messed up the words of the national anthem. Also, did anyone else think the reading of the Declaration of Independence was odd?

  2. So far haven’t seen a commercial that is very memorable.

  3. pandora says:

They read the Declaration of Independence? Seriously?

  4. Capt.Willard says:

Of course they read it seriously.
You don’t make fun of the Declaration of Independence.

  5. The Steelers are getting slaughtered right now.

  6. ek says:

The Black Eyed Peas meet Up With People. Except the sound is worse.

  7. socialistic ben says:

does anyone know if Peta’s ad this year got banned?

  8. ek says:

The PETA veggie ad did get banned.

  9. Close game! Packers up by 3, 7 minutes to go.

    1) The Black Eyed Peas were awesome. 2) Fuck the Packers. And yeah… 3) The reading of the Declaration of Independence was strange. It was the kind of shallow, “patriotic” spooge-fest that country music fans and Fox News viewers have substituted for actually living the democratic values of tolerance, civil productive debate, and being concerned with the country’s collective well being.

Comments posted tonight on the official Guns N’ Roses “Sweet Child O’ Mine” YouTube video:

Thumbs up if you came here to listen to the real deal and get Fergie out of you head !

    (actually, I did!)

    and

    Dear Fergie,

    FUCK YOU

    Sincerely, the Internet.

I read my full quota of a-hole comments here. It would never occur to me to seek out other sites on which to read a-holes.

    @jason330-Takes one to know one.

  14. Didn’t think it was a well-played game at all. Don’t think I’ve ever seen so many dropped passes in the Super Bowl. Not to mention Big Ben’s INT’s. Congrats to the Pack for hanging on when their entire secondary was decimated. Biggest play, IMHO, was the Mendenhall TO.

As to the commercials, overproduction and wretched excess took the day. Forget about the $$’s for ad time, gotta wonder how much some of these cost to produce. Certainly more than your average indie film.

A lot of sound and fury signifying nothing. Not unlike the Super Bowl itself.

  15. Delaware Libertarian says:

I like the Black eyed peas, but they were underwhelming in a stadium with 100,000 people, not to mention Fergie’s mike took a while to kick in a lot of times. Usher was the only one who had the energy to fit the scene.

  16. I failed to mention the one GREAT commercial–the Chrysler ‘Imported from Detroit’ piece. That was pretty damn inspiring.

  17. Jason330 says:

So I’m in the minority regarding the half time show. I guess I’m the only one who remembers “Up With People”.

  18. Yeah Jason, you’re the only person I’ve seen that liked BEP. Reviews have been pretty brutal.

‘Bulo, a lot of people were talking about that “Made in Detroit” ad. It was very effective. Many people were wishing political ads were done that way. It was one of the few I liked, along with the little Darth Vader kid.

  19. Obama2008 says:

I liked the halftime show too. I am a fogey who likes a little melody with his hip-hop, and the Black Eyed Peas fit the bill. I just went to the GNR video because the Peas inspired me look up that and other covers of the song.

  20. pandora says:

I didn’t see the halftime show (nor did I see any of the Superbowl), but we’ve been listening to the BEPs for 10 years – I accidentally stumbled across them. Can’t help it… I love them!

  21. Miscreant says:

“Forget about the $$’s for ad time, gotta wonder how much some of these cost to produce. Certainly more than your average indie film.”

Just got back from my cross-country loot, rape, and pillage tour. When we were in Malibu we stumbled upon, what looked like, a major film production. About 100+ staff, dining tents, 6 trailers for the actors, cranes, booms, several generators the size of a mini-van, actors (none recognizable), and enough lighting to illuminate a small stadium.
It was a fucking tuna fish commercial.

“…but we’ve been listening to the BEPs for 10 years – I accidentally stumbled across them. Can’t help it… I love them!”

You and my ex wife. But she’s a far left, liberal lawyer.

  22. pandora says:

Right now I’m painting the living room (it seemed like a good idea at the time) and I’ve put on my “Working Tunes” playlist.

BEPs, Neon Trees, Costello, Panic! At the Disco, Pink, Mike Posner, XTC, Sublime, Linkin Park, The Killers, (even a little Lady GaGa) etc.. This room should be done in no time!

  23. Von Cracker says:

The blatant militarism and the ‘we have the biggest cocks on the planet’ showmanship was too over the top for even a fox production.

It’s just a game, not Pyongyang on May Day, for eff’s sake! Utterly embarrassing!

If Joe Buck said at halftime the Idaho militia just invaded British Columbia, I wouldn’t have been surprised.

  24. Von Cracker says:

And P, if you want some excellent work music get yourself some LCD Soundsystem!

All the kewl kids dig it!
