Judging by yesterday’s Ron Williams column, the Delaware GOP leadership fight is already over. It’s time for the inmates to run the asylum. Tom Ross found a friendly ear in Ron Williams.
Because of the national publicity, state Republican Party Chairman Tom Ross was getting telephone calls from several fellow state chairs, including those in Connecticut and New Mexico, who were seeing a drop in the polls for Republican candidates in their state. They attributed it to that “wacko from Delaware” who’s making all Republicans look like goofballs.
Ross also told me recently that the chances of newcomers to Delaware joining the state Republican Party had been undermined by her. People with political convictions, and money to contribute, don’t want to join a party with people like her.
I’m sorry, but Connecticut and New Mexico has its own wingnuts, no need to blame ours. People don’t want to join the Delaware Republican Party if it’s full of nuts? Well, duh. Remember, Delaware’s Republican Party chose O’Donnell as its nominee, so perhaps she is a good reflection on the Delaware GOP.
The Republican rumor mill, by the way, has Phillips running for governor against Jack Markell next year.
…
OK, I said, you can bad-mouth the far right-wingers and tea party until the sun comes up, but my question remains: What are you going to do about them come next election? You know O’Donnell’s going to run against Tom Carper, and Urquhart has already said he’s running for Congress. These people can’t win and you admit they’re costing you money. And now you’ve got Mike Protack, another perennial loser who has never garnered a legitimate party following, running for state party chairman. And from what I hear, he could actually win this thing.
I finally received an answer that at first I thought was simply flip and sarcastic. But the more I thought about it, it might not be a bad idea, at least in the short run. “We’re just going to give them the keys and let them run the show. See ya later.”
Mike Protack as chairman of the Delaware GOP? God doesn’t love me that much. Vance Phillips vs Jack Markell for governor should be fun. I can’t wait for Phillips to tell us how he’s underpaid.
