Tax The Oil Companies. Yes, it is that simple.

Showing a little spine growth, The Senate Dems have released this video:

I’m not crazy about the tag line, “Handouts for Big Oil: Will the GOP say no?”    It is making the viewer answer a riddle.   I’d have preferred something like “Help Stop the GOP’s Handouts to Big Oil”

The GOP has no vision for the future.

They also have no credible candidates for 2012.

    They are dinosaurs.

We aren’t even talking about new taxes. We are talking about stopping the subsidies that they get, that let them get away with paying less in taxes than they would otherwise.

The former Shell Oil exec makes the point that I made re: the proposed tax credits to Delaware businesses — these don’t help you to make any business decisions that count. This money basically goes right to their bottom line. And there is no reason for taxpayers to do that.

  3. socialistic ben says:

    ya know,
im inclined to agree with the charge that gas prices will go up if we take away the subsidies.
Oil companies are run by greedy ass-hats who only care about their own bank accounts. If you take away their corporate welfare, they will raise the price of gas to make up the difference. then probably raise it a little more to punish America for cutting them off.

I say do it. Let a gallon of gas hit 10 fucking dollars. and see how fast we all get electric cars, and mass transit, and solar power.

  4. anon says:

Repubs are going to do their best to make the next election about gas prices, as if that was the President’s job.

  5. anon says:

Why dont we do what they did in Alaska. the state owns the oil. So the only way out of this…is natinalize our oil! All those billions would be going into the US treasury. That should be Congress threat back to the greedy oil barrons.

  6. cassandra m says:

Alaska doesn’t “nationalize” its oil or other resources. They do get mineral lease payments, royalties, bonuses and so on from the harvesting of their natural resources that that invest some portion of in the Permanent Fund. That Fund provides a yearly dividend to Alaska residents. Until recently, Alaskans were pretty good at getting a decent deal for their leases and royalties. Unlike the Feds who wouldn’t know a market-based lease deal if it came up and hit them in the face. But the Feds get some revenues from their oil leases too.

  7. JustMe says:

Ten billion dollars is a pittance against the trillion dollar spending spree. I’d be in favor of ending virtually all subsidies for businesses. It’s one thing to grant some seed money to a mom & pop trying to get going but giving any cash to a multibillion dollar corporation is just stupid.

Also, if this guy was against the handout, why didn’t he just refuse it?

  8. Jason330 says:

Tax money for huge profitable oil companies is a pittance, but tax money for NPR will break the bank. We have learned about the GOPs conditional ethics. Now we have conditional accounting.

  9. Joe Cass says:

Seemingly an American becomes a hero when he loses limb or life in a foreign land but it takes a patriot to refuse to pay the freight of said consequence.

  10. Prosperity Lives says:

Maybe tax Fisker auto, those fools get massive tax breaks and incentives for a car no one will buy.

Tax the oil companies and price at the pump will go up fools.

  11. Joe Cass says:

Fisker steals. Ask Tesla Motors. The UAW is about to learn the same lesson.
