Blue Hen Rowers Represent – Solid Third Place Finish at Dad Vail Regatta
I don’t know anything about rowing, but Delaware’s finish in the marquee event, “The Heavyweight 8” and their overall points total gave them a very respectable third place.
SUCK IT HARVARD!!
PHILADELPHIA — Michigan and Purdue took the men’s and women’s varsity heavyweight eight titles and amassed the most points in Saturday’s 73rd Dad Vail Regatta.
The Michigan men covered the 2,000-meter course in 5:48.05, followed by Florida Tech (5:50.97) and Delaware (5:51.66). The Purdue women finished in 6:38.49, ahead of Old Dominion (6:38.82) and Grand Valley (6:43.43).
Since the University chose to eliminate men’s track and field and x-country in the 100th anniversary year it would stand to reason that such recent success with the Rowing team should justify its elimination as a team sport by the university’s administration. Elimination of popular Delaware High School activities seems to correspond with the ever dwindling numbers of in-state students attending UofD.

Beware of what you train for UD rowers, right JK? Now you are on the budget chopper’s radar screen.
By the way I believe the cost of the canceled men’s programs was slightly under $50K per year. Help me with the math here. What percentage of $130 million is $50,000 anyway?
The taxpayers are on the hook for $120m in operating expenses another $20m-$30m in capital (Bond) money and I’m not allowed to look at how they determine to spend my taxpayers money and how they choose to operate, see HB126 for remedy. Please post this abuse of power where you see fit.

UD is shameful and disgusting. dumping a coach of 29 years standing and tossing him out like trash!
As I recall the U of D President is the highest paid University President in the country. You can’t have everything. A track team AND the highest paid President.
I’d also like to add that compensating for the amount of money bleeding out of the football team to keep mens sports prices down doesn’t justify cutting the track team either, since my season tickets have jumped in price, along with the parking fee and required “donation” to the athletics dept to keep our preferred seats.
This post needs a few corrections. First of all Harvard doesn’t attend Vails, they were at Eastern Sprints last weekend. A competition Delaware attended prior to new rules being instituted which prevent club teams from participating at our former league championship and the IRA which is the national championship.
John, the University doesn’t support the crew team as much as you think. The team is classified as a club sport which means only a fraction of the operating budget is paid by the University. All of the rowers on the team pay dues and participate in fund raisers to keep the team afloat. Despite the challenges we still have one of the best lightweight crews in the country. Our heavyweights are pretty good as well.
The rumors on the river(and what i think i saw when they passed me) was the boat that got 3rd in the heavyweight division was 6 lights and 2 heavies. Our JV Lights took second in the lightweight varsity event as well. All around, for a club program Delaware is the envy of many. Though one day I hope to see them back at Sprints so we can really say suck it harvard.
