This has been fun. I messed up and didn’t get one of Kent County’s best foods on the ballot, but there is always next year.
So here is the final list:
Representing New Castle County, The Bobbie from Capriotti’s
I find it a little dry, but your comments have swayed me that this is a decent sandwich.
Representing Kent County, The Crabs from Sambo’s Tavern.
Crabs are the ultimate “sit around with some beer and make a day of it” food, so this is one where the eating experience enters into the popularity. I was going to use my judges challenge and knock Sambo’s out in favor of Dover’s Frankfurt Bakery an its Cheese Danish – but that Cheese Danish is so good, it doesn’t need me rigging the ballot box.
Last but not least, we have Sussex County represented by the Italian sausage with onions and peppers at “Gus & Gus Place” (yes that’s the official name, sounds odd, I know) of Rehoboth.
Someone once told me that “hunger is the best sauce.” There is certainly something to that because I think there is nothing like hanging out on a beach and swimming in the Atlantic all day to make food taste good. So Gus & Gus benefits from location, but by all reports, this sandwich is an awesome eat.
