Does Boehner Have The Votes?
Think Progress tallies the numbers and it appears (at this moment) that Boehner is one R vote short.
So… will he manage to twist some Tea Party arms and avoid public humiliation, or will the one vote grow into more nays? Not sure, but if he doesn’t have the votes heading into this why would other Tea Partiers/Conservatives want to go on record for a plan that won’t pass – even if they stick out their political neck and vote for it?

I would not be at all surprised if Boehner comes up with his votes.
One, these guys fall in line. Period. It is in their DNA.
Two, the rest of this Congress is going to be a serious mess. Boehner has been beaten and leashed here and dysfunction and silliness will indeed be the order of the day.
Does it really matter if Boehner has the votes for it to pass the House? Can the bill pass the Senate–no.
Can the House override an Obama veto–no.
Would the Senate override an Obama veto–no.
What a freaking waste of time.
I like Carney’s bill to place all federal legislators at the head of the list of ‘furloughed federal employees’ as of August 3rd. They certainly are failing to do their job.
It matters to Boehner, and if he can’t get the votes then there will be no doubt who’s running the party.
Love the Carney bill. It’s perfect!
“dysfunction and silliness will indeed be the order of the day.”
it hasnt been for the past 2 years?
The vote that was scheduled for 6:00 PM has been postponed, which indicates he doesn’t have the votes.
if this bill passes the house tonight it will prove that the TEABAGGERS can be Co-opted and are nothing but sheep to be led,
Since the vote has been postponed, I don’t think he has the votes.
But MSNBC reported that Boehner is doing a full court press by calling Reps into a room one at a time and pressuring them.
Maybe he has to promise a few more pet projects to tea baggers.
The under reported story right now is Bachman and a few other tea party favorites saying plainly no to ANY debt limit increast. None. Not even with cuts or anything.
Now thats obstruction.
The vote has been postponed. Boehner obviously doesn’t have the votes. Major armtwisting is happening because the GOP is desperate to blame this mess on Obama.
The paranoid and suspicious side of me wonders if this might be a GOP ruse. What if they are creating the impression that they are stymied only so Reid sends his bill to them first, which the House GOP roundly rejects. THEN Boehner floats his bill, which gets amended in awful ways, and.the House GOP passes it and sends it to the Senate so that it’s the last bill before the deadline? If the Senate votes it.down, it then looks like the Dems didn’t meet the deadline. Obama and the Dems get the blame when the economy tanks. That of course creates pressure on.the Senate to approve the House bill and for Obama to sign it.
Don’t finance bills have to originate in the House, Dana?
I think spending bills have to originate in the house.
Perhaps Boehner passes a bill out of the house and it goes to Reid. Reid then merges his 2.2T plan into Boehners and it gets sent back to the house?
House votes for it with no tea party votes. Tea party is downgraded as effective leaders, creating a bigger chasm in the republican party.
Yes? No?
Reid has just introduced his bill for debate and a vote, meaning that the Repub bill could be the last bill introduced right at the deadline. I still suspect that the House Repub impasse is a ruse so that they can introduce the last bill standing at the deadline.
