Feds Feed Families
The next time one of our teabagger friends say that Federal employees are only out for themselves, tell them to read this.
Faced with a 2 year pay freeze and continued attacks from the right, Federal employees pitched in and donated almost 5.8 million pounds of food during the annual Feds Feed Families food drive. The goal was 2 million pounds.
My agency alone, with only 5000 employees, donated over 60,000 pounds!
I believe that most people who work for federal and state government (I’m talking unelected employees and non-political appointed employees)are primarily motivated by wanting to have an occupation that involves community service. So I find nothing about this story that is remarkable. I find it predictable.
Thank you Debbie Downer.
Perhaps you feel that Federal civilian employees are being overpaid and can afford to buy extra food to donate to feed those without. Guess what? We’re feeling the same financial pinch that everyone else is.
It’s nice to see the Fed employees are still doing so well financially, and generous! I wish I had a “2 year pay freeze”.
MJ – were you responding to Dana? If so, I think you missed the point.
LG – I was. It seemed to me that his point was that this should be expected from government employees.
@Delbert – how does being subject to a 2 year pay freeze equate to doing “so well financially?”
You did misunderstand my point, MJ. I was saying that in my view (and experience) government employees are publicly minded and want to help others. That’s why they chose the profession they did. I wasn’t making a comment about their pay. Just the opposite. I was suggesting that government employees tend to be sacrificial on behalf of others.
Thanks for clearing that up, Dana. But you still don’t see anything remarkable about raising almost 5.8 million pounds of food in 3 months?
Yes, I think that was remarkably generous. It certainly exceeded all expectations (the goal).
