Jail Or… Church?

Filed in National by on September 26, 2011

Simply amazing:

A small town in Alabama is offering non-violent offenders the choice between doing prison time and paying a fine, or working their sentence off by going to church every week. […]

Bay Minette Police Chief Mike Rowland said the program would save the town the $75 a day it costs to house an inmate. And, he said, “it was agreed by all the pastors that at the core of the crime problem was the erosion of family values and morals. We have children raising children and parents not instilling values in young people.”

“You show me somebody who falls in love with Jesus, and I’ll show you a person who won’t be a problem to society,” he told WKRG.

Imagine that!  All pastors agreed that the problem is the erosion of family values and morals.  Talk about job security.  And, let’s face it, houses of worship are having trouble putting butts in the seats.  Now the town can send them clients.

Notice also the emphasis on Jesus.  And while the town claims that it won’t dictate which church the offender must attend it should be noted that “no mosques or synagogues are participating in the program because there are none in the area.”

I’m betting on grape juice. 🙂

    like the Klan.

Yet more proof that the Souther Conservatives want to impose theocratic law in America.

I wonder if Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker, Ted Haggard fall into this category.

  5. Don says:

Since my chances of getting molested would be about the same at either place, I suppose I’d have to pick the one I can drive home from afterward.

  6. MJ says:

I guess we Jews and our Muslim brothers are problems to society, without breaking the law.

What the heck are they going to do with Scientologists?

Could you imagine the kind of absurd dictatorship the Confederacy would be if it existed today?

The people you mentioned are hypocrites, but I’m not sure I’d classify them as a “problem to society”.

Ok then. All persons busted with pot should claim to be a member of the St. Lucia Zionist Church of Rastafarianism. Don’t need a building cause we worship on our couches.

The girl in the News Journal today who was injecting “bath salts” and attacked her boyfriend with a knife, is wearing a crucifix… lol

At least he’s offering them a choice, albeit a weird, possibly unconstitutional choice.

Prisons are overcrowded with non-violent offenders. I’d rather they freed up space for people who commit violent crimes so they don’t keep getting slapped on the wrist and given short sentences. Besides, they just have to GO to church. They don’t have to actually listen to what’s being said. Maybe they could just spend an hour a week in a quiet setting and reflect on their lives. What harm could come of it? You know, other than maybe an occasional churchgoer’s wallet being stolen. Haha. 😉
