Daily Delawhere [New Feature]

Recently, an online photographer was doing this project posting a photo from every state. For the life of me, I cannot find the link to it right now. But the photographer’s photograph for Delaware was a picture of driving through a highway tunnel not unlike the Harbor tunnels in Baltimore. Now, I was born in Delaware. I have lived in Delaware most of my life. I consider myself to be a native Delawarean who has the right and privilege to look down upon the rest of the 49 states. I have traveled up and down this state, and to each corner. And I have never driven through a highway tunnel here. And that is because there is no highway tunnel in the state of Delaware. There just isn’t. Not under the C&D Canal. Not under the Delaware River and/or Bay.

Anyway, that got me to looking at photos of Delaware online. And that got me to thinking about taking more pictures of Delaware myself. And then I thought it would be a good idea to start a daily feature of random photos from around Delaware and have you guys guess where the photo was taken and/or what the photo is of, not unlike Andrew Sullivan’s contest on his blog. I will take some of the photos myself, and welcome submissions from our readership that will require me to guess.

Here is today’s Daily Delawhere photo, and it’s easy:

If you have a photo you want to submit, email it to delawaredem@delawareliberal.com. Thanks.

New Castle County Police Officer Stabbed to Death

New Castle County police officer Joe Szczerba was stabbed to death in a fight with a suspect he was taking into custody early this morning, officials have told the News Journal. Officer Szczerba was responding to a call about a disorderly person in the Penn Acres neighborhood near New Castle, at the corner of East Roosevelt Avenue and Fithian Drive. Somehow, as he was taking the disorderly suspect into custody, the suspect stabbed him. The officer was rushed to Christiana where he was pronounced dead. The disorderly suspect is in custody.

Senator Coons:

“Joe Szczerba was a good person and a great police officer, and I was shocked and deeply saddened to get the call that he had been murdered in the line of duty late last night. Annie and I are heartbroken by the loss. His wife and extended family, as well as the entire New Castle County Police Department, will be in our thoughts, in our prayers, and in our hearts as they cope with this tragic loss.”

New Castle County Executive Paul G. Clark:

“I met with members of his family, conveyed my profound condolences to them and assured them of my prayers and support in the difficult days ahead. My deepest sympathies go out to the family, to his fellow officers, and to all who knew him. We mourn the loss of this brave and dedicated public servant, and I ask everyone to pray for him and his loved ones.

This tragic event is a grim reminder of the danger our police men and women – along with our paramedics and other first responders — put themselves in every day to protect their fellow citizens. We owe them a deep debt of gratitude for putting their lives on the line for us.”

Giving the Finger to Federal Employees

This has been a bad year for Federal civilian employees. We’ve been blamed for the budget deficits and have become the punching bag for teabaggers near and far. Supposedly we’re the cause of everything that is wrong in Washington.

So who would have thought that a bill to honor civilian employees who die in the line of duty would cause such an uproar with the right wing?

A seemingly innocuous piece of bipartisan legislation that would provide an inexpensive flag-draped patriotic gesture is drawing right-wing opposition because the honor would go to federal civilian employees.

The legislation would authorize the presentation of American flags at the funerals of federal workers killed in the line of duty, much like is done for members of the military. It was expected to pass easily when it was scheduled for a vote in the House last week.

“Every year federal civilian employees are killed at home and abroad doing their duty for our nation,” said Rep. Richard L. Hanna (R-N.Y.), a sponsor of the bill. “The American flag embodies the values of our nation that these individuals worked to uphold. This legislation would provide a modest, but significant, benefit in honor of these dedicated individuals who sacrificed on our behalf.”

It appeared that this bill would pass without any major opposition. But it ran into trouble when the American Legion denounced the bill. And it didn’t help that Erik Erickson from Redstate wrote an article calling it “The Flags for Bureaucrats Act.”

The Legion opposed the bill for several reasons, one of which is misleading.

“Civil service workers do not sign a pledge to defend America with their lives,” said Fang Wong, the Legion’s national commander, in a news release.

The truth is that the oath civilians and members of the military swear says they will “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

Yeah, that’s right. Federal civilian employees and members of the military basically swear the same oath (the military adds in lines about obeying the orders of officers and the President).

Wong I guess forgot about the 168 victims of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Office Building in Oklahoma City in 1996. I guess he doesn’t care about the civilians who work in war zones next to military members (see Iraq). When I was on active duty, I worked next to civilian employees on a daily basis. My secretary was a civilian.

I’m a member of the American Legion. Sadly, they are as wrong on this issue as they are on DADT.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) told Fox News that Republicans face a tough choice on President Obama’s jobs bill: “If we vote for this plan, we’ll own the economy with the president, and he desperately needs someone else to blame it on. If we vote against it, he’s going to try to say Congress blocked his ability to create jobs.”

Sounds about right. A new Gallup poll finds that 45% want their member of Congress to vote for the legislation and just 32% want their member to vote against it (23% didn’t know enough about it). And a recent CNN/Opinion Research poll shows a plurality liking the president’s jobs plan outline by a 43%-35% margin, but with 22% undecided.

And the Phillies are in the playoffs. Again

The Embarrassment of the Poverty Rate:

That woman standing there by that shitty house and beat-up truck on the dirt road in Mississippi leading to whatever polluting plant is behind her probably doesn’t give a goddamn about what Ben Bernanke has said at any point in his life. She probably doesn’t give a goddamn about whether or not certain kinds of income are taxed as capital gains. She more than likely gives a damn about feeding those kids. She more than likely gives a damn about keeping them and herself healthy. She more than likely wants them to have a future, probably one beyond mud and filth.

She won’t be able to. Not in the rest of her life. Because as we talk endlessly about the economy of this country, we are leaving a huge chunk of the population out. And now, with the release of 2010 census data, we know that the chunk is getting larger. In one of the most depressing bits of news in the unending string of ever more depressing news in this ever more depressing time, the rate of poverty in the United States has leaped by over 2 million people in the last year to 15.1% or 46.2 million people, with median income dropping, too. On average, Americans make 7% less now than they did in 1997.

But wait, photo-woman. Because it gets even worse for you. See, you’re a black woman, so that means your poverty rate is 25.6%. And if you’re head of the household? Well, 40.7% of those women live in poverty. Oh, and the kids? They’re screwed, too, with nearly 40% living in poverty now.

You got that? 4 out of 10 African American kids live in poverty. Did you notice the “American” part of that identity? If you’re Republican, probably not.

This is easy to get outraged about, as are all the stats and all the realities about being dirt poor in America (which is not all cell phones and Cadillacs and cable TVs, despite what moral scumfuckers like Rand Paul and others say). It’s easy to say that 22% of children living in poverty is enough to make us all sick.

But the Rude Pundit is just embarrassed. It’s like seeing your dad so drunk that he pisses his pants. “Aw, c’mon,” you wanna say to the bartender who called you. “Do I gotta claim him?” But you do. And you can either clean him up so that he can do it again, or you can make the fucker get some help. Or you can just move to Canada. He won’t find you there.

Not only is the Rude Pundit embarrassed for the nation as a whole, but he’s even more embarrassed for the Democratic Party. See, you know what the photo woman also gives a damn about? That she has Medicare and Social Security. If Democrats can’t make a case on those issues (no matter what stupidity the Obama administration is tossing around about it) to the people it matters to most, then why bother even existing?

Simply put, there’s a fuck of a lot more poor people in this country than rich ones. And they get to vote, too, despite the best efforts of Republicans, and they get the same number of votes per person as the wealthy. The Rude Pundit’s said it before and will say it again: If the Democrats wanted to shake up the electoral landscape, they’d throw trucks of money at a movement to get the poor to the voting booths. They’d create jobs programs and housing programs and more real and actual liberal stuff, and when someone brought up tax breaks, they’d have a press conference from a shack in FuckYerCousin, Tennessee, to ask why.

If, you know, Democrats still gave a damn about the poor.

(Note: The Rude Pundit realizes that he is engaging in a bit of willful projection in describing the woman in the photo as noble and struggling. She might be a total asshole who beats the kids, starves them, and leaves them in the shit shack to go hang out with her rich friends at the club.)

(Update: Rude reader Paul informs us that it is not, in fact, a poison factory behind her, but it is a grain elevator. So, obviously, her life is now a bed of hydrangeas.)

Palin Supporters Unphased By Palin’s Adultery & Cocain Use

It is all about context. Let’s break this down and you can see why Palin fans not only don’t mind that she did blow and black guys – but welcome the news.

The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin… claims Palin was seen snorting cocaine off the top of a 55-gallon drum while snowmobiling with friends. It also alleges she smoked marijuana with a professor while at Mat-Su College in Alaska.

So the adultery… Gingrich helps out Palin here, because he first explained patriotic fucking to the idiot Republican masses. Palin supporters (all five of them) know that if Palin was fucking someone not named Todd Palin, there was a pretty goddamn good patriotic reason for it. Score: Palin 1 Haters 0

The cocaine use: “Mama Griz” was snorting the stuff off a 55 gallon drum of crude oil. It is clear that she is saying, “Listen up natural resources – you are my bitch!” This is a perfectly legitimate thumb in the eye of tree hugging fags from Berkley to wherever else tree hugging fags congregate.

She is a maverick, get it? This only embiggens her mythic status among stupid people.

GOP Shot Callers Terrified of Perry

If there were any lingering questions, this past week has proven that the GOP establishment is determined to bring down Rick Perry. How committed are they to Perry not being the eventual nominee? Well check this out.

The GOP’s propaganda arm – Fox News – spliced a Perry debate response to a question about the American Jobs act into a discussion about Social Security making it appear that Perry is down right giddy about abolishing the successful program which keeps both Republican and Democratic seniors from living in poverty.

KILMEADE: Rick Perry’s Republican rivals ganging up on the governor for his attacks on Social Security, but he’s fighting back.

PERRY: I would suggest to you that people are tired of spending money we don’t have on programs we don’t want.

KILMEADE: More from last night’s tea party debate, [Perry] clearly happy with that answer.

So what is a poor confused teabag to do? One the one hand they have their square jawed, C student, messiah in Perry. On the other hand they have their unblinking arbiter of truth in Fox News.

Something’s gotta give. Hand me some popcorn.

Aside: It is mildly interesting to me that “Fox News Simply Makes Shit Up” isn’t even a very big deal in this story. Everyone has so thoroughly internalized the fact that objective truth and honesty mean nothing to Fox News that their blatantly unethical behavior doesn’t cause even the smallest of ripples in the news landscape.

Open Source Rules for GOP Presidential Debates Fantasy League

I don’t watch the GOP debates because I cherish the tattered remnants of my sanity. If I did watch that panderific hatefest, I’d be tempted to come up with fantasy league rules and schedule a draft. The scoring rules would go a little something like this.

Saying Reagan’s name 10 times = 1 point
Direct comparison of self to Reagan = 2 points
Saying that remaining in Afganistan demonstrates “our strength” = 1 point
Saying “tax cuts” 20 times = 1 point
Mentioning George Bush favorably = 1 point
Saying that the budget can be balanced without raising taxes = 5 points
The “Oh no he didn’t!” moment (directly attacking another candidate on something that is “off limits” eg. Bachmann’s migrains or Gingriches serial marriages) = 10 points

This is a quick take on the concept. Someone who actually watches the debates could probably punch it up a bit.

The News Journal reports that Russ Murphy, the local Delaware teabagger toxin that founded the 9/12 Delaware Patriots, suffered a stroke and is in the hospital. It sounds like he will recover. Hopefully this health crisis will give him a chance to reflect on poor political opinions and rhetoric, considering that it is likely he is availing himself of health care paid for by the government.

Carper Needs Some Talking To.

This is what he had to say on the America Jobs Act:

“I think the best jobs bill that can be passed is a comprehensive long-term deficit-reduction plan,” said Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), discussing proposals to slash the debt by $4 trillion by overhauling entitlement programs and raising revenue through tax reforms. “That’s better than everything else the president is talking about — combined.”

Tell Senator Carper to, in more polite and civil words, to shut the fuck up and support the America Jobs Act today. Tell him that Democrats support creating jobs and protecting Social Security and Medicare, not sacrificing both to protect the tax cuts of the rich.

And tell him that if he wants to be a Republican, he is free to join that party at any time.

County Tries to Sell State White Elephant

Goes by the name of Rockwood.

Yet another tony estate, built in the mid-1800’s, championed by those people more concerned about family crests than family economic survival, purchased by New Castle County with lotsa bucks from the state, turned into a ‘mansion and a park’ during the go-go Gordon and Freebury years, and now, and now…the County can’t afford the upkeep and wants to pawn it off on the state.

From the same administration that proposed $92/month cuts for the medically indigent, comes this response:

“It’s a reasonable proposal and one we’re taking a look at,” (Secretary of State Jeff) Bullock said. “Given Rockwood’s proximity to other state parkland, there’s an argument that you could create a greater efficiency by having the state run it.”

Uh, right. Don’t just take serial bureaucrat Bullock’s word for it.  County Community Services Secretary Marcus Henry (yes, he’s Margaret Rose Henry’s son) says that this proposal makes sense  “because Rockwood is close to Bellevue State Park”. Yep, all you have to do is cross Shipley Road, Carr Road, wend up past the industrial park and DELDOT maintenance area, cross Marsh Road and I-95, get back on Carr Road and you’re almost there. Why, they’re practically right next door.

Let me put this as succinctly as I can: Neither the state nor the county should expend another dime on this indulgence to the upper middle class. The public has demonstrated its disinterest by their absence. Councilman John Cartier, who I generally like, says that:

(t)he park needs to be marketed better to increase attendance, Cartier said. Programs need to be added, too, he said. The museum currently offers tours and lectures. Proceeds from other events, such as the Victorian Ball scheduled for February, are part of an ongoing fundraising campaign by the Friends of Rockwood to pay for restoration of the conservatory attached to the mansion.

This should not be a state or county function. The County should not be marketing events with public dollars. Both the state and county have sunk significant costs into Rockwood. Despite their best efforts, they now have a money pit to show for it. They should cut their losses, try to sell the white elephant, hell, at sheriff’s sale, if necessary, and get out of this business.

If the tony ‘Friends of Rockwood’, allegedly 135 strong, are sincere, they can either try to buy it themselves, or find a private purchaser. President June Zappa (Editor’s Note: No yellow snow has ever been eaten at Rockwood) might want to call up those Copelands. I hear they’ve got money to throw around.

REEL Talk Film Premiere featuring Gov. Markell at The Queen.

A short film depicting a day in the life of Governor Jack Markell will premiere this evening at 5:30 pm at the World Cafe Live at The Queen in Wilmington. The film was produced by students participating in the Jewish Family Services of Delaware Media Matters program, a media and video production class for “at-risk” youth. The students in the program shadowed the Governor for a day this past Spring. The Governor will attend the priemere.

Have “decent” Republicans simply quit?

There is this person, Sarah Reidy, who is sick and sad about what the GOP has become but mostly you just hear crickets.

I mean, shouldn’t someone other than a lowly Huntsman staffer speak up against the pep-rally for death and cruerlty that the GOP has become? Are the decent Republicans simply ceeding the nominating process over the the blood-thirsty theocrats and closet case psychos.

FWIW – here is Reidy’s comment.

“For years I have tried to prove that the GOP isn’t the Party of elitist, stereotypical people that lack compassion,” Reidy wrote on her Facebook account Tuesday. “When did creativity and growth become secondary to hate? Hearing the debate crowds go crazy over things like executions and the uninsured dying makes me sick and sad for my Party that I devote my time and efforts.”
