I saw this last week, but still was in mourning for my beloved Phillies. So I put a star next to it on my Google Reader and then promptly forgot about it. Until now.
Two weeks after telling Phillies fans their baseball team would lose the National League Division Series to the St. Louis Cardinals, Wilmington Councilman Kevin F. Kelley Sr. took some time at the end of [last] Thursday’s city council meeting to remind them of that.
“Cardinals are in the World Series and look out, we only got three more games to go,” Kelley said after flashing the Card’s logo on his smart phone. Kelley suggested he may be back in a few weeks to brag some more. But that was only a suggestion since the Cardinals lost to the Texas Rangers that evening tying up the World Series at one game a piece.
Many in this area, if not the overwhelming majority of Mr. Kelley’s constituents, are Phillies fans. So that was kinda a dick move on his part for him to stomp over the hearts of still mourning Phillies fans. I subscribe to the Howard Eskin theory of fandom. If you are born and raised in this area, the greater Philadelphia metropolitan area, which Northern Delaware and Wilmington is in, then you root for the local teams. If you don’t, your a “cockaroach.” Eskin calls all the Cowboys fans who grew up in this area but then jumped on the Cowboys bandwagon that.
So for Mr. Kelley’s sake, I hope he was born and raised in St. Louis. But that doesn’t sound like the case, as he says he roots for the Cardinals because his son likes them. That’s a rather weak attempt to innoculate himself from criticism. So tonight or tomorrow, when the St. Louis Cardinals lose the World Series, I call on Mr. Kelley to stand up in the council chambers and congratulate the Texas Rangers, while wearing a Phillies hat.
Of course, I probably just jinxed the Rangers, and now the Cardinals will win and then Kelley can stand up again for the Cardinals.
