What Does Romney Stand For? Nothing, As Far As I Can Tell

Filed in National by on October 27, 2011

Up until recently I never gave Mitt Romney much thought.  He was just sort of there.  And while I’d never vote for him, I never viewed him as horrible.  Which was why I kept my eye on him.  Out of all the Republican candidates Romney was the one I considered the biggest threat to Obama.

The reason I viewed him as a threat was his ability to appear reasonable and sane, and with the economy the way it is I could see people being comfortable with voting for him.  I don’t see that any more.

Needless to say, Romney has taken flip-flopping to levels unseen.  I expect a certain amount of flip-flopping from candidates from both parties, but Romney’s flip-flopping has reached a point where I have no idea what he stands for.  There’s an ugliness to what he’s doing; an untrustworthiness that oozes from him.  If elected to the office he covets what would he do as President?  I honestly have no idea, and that concerns me.

In my book, Mitt Romney has become the most frightening of the GOP field.  I simply can’t stand him, and I hadn’t felt that way about him previously.

If you’re a Romney supporter… what are you supporting?  Serious question, BTW.

I was going to go to Romney’s web site to look up his positions on the issues, but then I realized “Why bother?”

If we end up stuck with one of these Repubs I’d rather it were Romney. He has the most potential to govern like a human being.

For me, the key issues are: Taxes on the rich (yes please) and cuts to the safety net (No!). I don’t think there is a hair’s breadth of difference between Obama and Romney on those issues, regardless of what Romney is saying about tax cuts during the primary (and regardless of what Obama is saying on the campaign trail about tax increases). They already agree on health care.

It’s very interesting to me that Romney has John Kerry’s baggage from 2004. Except no one has to make up any of Romney’s flip-flops. Multiple Choice Mitt has the unique problem of trying to run conscious of a General Election, while all of his competition assume that all they need to do is make the base happy. Multiple Choice Mitt isn’t managing this all that well, so stuff like this video ought to be the norm for the next 12 months. And this video is *good*. More like this, please!

Romney’s flip-flop problem is neutralized in a Romney vs. Obama contest. Obama has enough flip-flops of his own. Both sides could make equally devastating flip-flop video mash-ups.

Wrong, Puck. Romney has a big problem with this issue, far bigger than anyone else – but if you need your daily dose of Obama is no different than Bush Romney, have at it.

I wasn’t kidding, I think he’s the worst of the GOP field, and I previously didn’t think this.

I seriously doubt that he would. And yet the vague notion that he might govern like a human being disqualifies him in the eyes of most primary voting Republicans.

    I see a category 4 Hermincane in Obama’s future.

Obama implemented the tax plan he campaigned against in the general election, and the health care plan he campaigned against in the primary. Plus some smaller stuff I am too depressed to catalog just now.

Romney’s team will make video hamburger of any plan by Obama to attack him for flip-flops.

Maybe Romney has more flip-flops, but Obama’s are bigger.

  7. anon says:

If Obama was smart he wouldn’t need to attack Romney on flip flops. He’d hammer on the fact that Romney is a Republican.

Yes, that is the better choice. They would have to observe a truce on flip-flops. And health care.
