What the Hell? Vance Phillips in plane crash, breaks back.
Talk about a no-good very bad horrible past few days for Sussex County Councilman Vance Phillips. According to WGMD, Phillips was flying his motorized ultralight airplane when it crashed yesterday. He is at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville this morning being treated for a broken back. Politics aside, we hope his injuries are not too serious and that he recovers fully.
None of this makes any sense.
Who fly’s a open Ultra Light Plane (Hang Glider with a motor) in this weather? Why is he way down in Virginia? They fly slow and do not have big tanks. He must have made stop after stop to get down there. With Charges pending against him he is flying around south west Virginia???
I am sure Vance regrets his assault on the sheriff but at this point I think it may be wise to arrest him for his own protection. I am very concerned he may hurt himself or others again. He is clearly very troubled.

Crash – um, how do we know that Vance assaulted anyone? No charges have been filed and if the story about Christopher coming at Vance with his hand on his gun, trying to unholster it are true, then Vance was defending himself.
Phillips may keep his plane in VA. Maybe he trades his watermellons seeds for a space in macaca’s hanger.
This sort of unfounded personal attack is why people leave politics. FACT: Sunday afternoon was warm and Sunny and more so in central VA. FACT: He was at an air field specificly set up to train ultra light pilots FACT: Ultra lights fold up for easy ground transport. Ergo, Vance was likely on a pre arranged recreational trip to play with his “New toy”

I do hope that Vance is OK. He is probably pretty lucky to have survived the crash.
Ahh there have been other personal shots at Vance before the plane went down but yea on this specific thread his is the only one. I have known Vance 20 years he is a poiltical neanderthall but also a personable guy.
Mr. Phillips has been taking flight lessons and was in VA for said lessons when this occurred. This was a freak accident and nothing more.

WGMD has this article posted, after 5 comments they deleted them all. And none were really over the top. WGMD has been deleting A LOT of comments lately.
I don’t necessarily remember many personal shots being taken at Vance. Sure some political shots, like the Watermelon of Doom that portends the next national Republican to be disgraced.
In fact, you’ll notice that DL has been relatively sympathetic to Vance w.r.t. the battle with the sheriff.
The News Journal reported that his web site had a photo of the plane calling it a new toy and he was down in VA learning how to fly it when he crash-landed. It is a miracle he is alive.
I think the Sheriff had Vance shot down out of the sky by his Virginia counterparts for kicking him in the balls after he cracked him in the head last week.

I met Mr. Phillips several years ago at a political event. Talked to him for a long time. He’s a friendly person. I feel horrible that he suffered this serious personal injury. He and his family must be devastated.

believe it or not, I;m going to take a stand here, for Vance –
I DO NOT agree with him politically, religiously or otherwise
but he is a damm fine, decent human being, and has ALWAYS been very decent to me and my friends. Actually, I have NEVER heard him say or hint at anything smarmy, snide or nasty at my views or diverse friends
because of the delicate position I have, over the years I have had the opportuninty to hear and/or be privy to all sorts of nasty, comments, from BOTH sides, on race and gender identification, and it always sickens me. no matter who says it.
I have NEVER seen this, or felt this, from Vance
Even if it was someone who is a total jerk, I would still wish them then best.
Vance has a family, a wife and children, as does the sheriff, as does other council members, whether we agree wth them or not…the decent human thing to do is pray/wish them a speedy recovery
we are NOT the nasty crowd, clapping on a death peanlty, a death due to lack of insurance, or other mailaise wished upon, gays, women, illeagal immigrants, etc
we need to be better than that – because we are better than that. and that is why I feel a part of this group.

Falling out of the sky doesn’t make Vance Phillips an angel, he’s still the same man he was before the accident.
That man is the man who:
– doesn’t believe in abortion even if the mother will die
– wants Christian prayer in public schools
– wants Christian prayer in county council meetings
– gave us Christine O’Donnell
– who sells the environment out for developers
– spent 2010 on a developer’s payroll and claimed it wasn’t a conflict
– drove Ron Sams out of leadership
– is anti civil union and anti gay marriage
– couldn’t sit at GOP headquarters in a meeting with one of his own right wing buddies without (allegedly) resorting to physical violence.
What I’ve seen from Vance in the many years that I’ve known him is exactly the opposite of what Aoine has seen. I wish him a speedy recovery, but I’m not going to pretend he’s suddenly a great guy.

JSG, I’m not going to pretend that I have any clue what you are talking about, but you have a long memory. If you are talking about what has been said on the blog in the past about Vance, he is a public person, and is subject to some ribbing.
Without some evidence of unfairness (and no, I’m not going to go do your research), I’m going to conclude that you didn’t like some jokes about the guy that other non-friends of yours are subject to every day. In other words, NEXT!

That is what Im talking about. I would rather someone like Vance Phillips, who is open about his beliefs and non-condeming of others,
than someone who is politically pro-civil unions, pro-choice, etc but then uses mysoginisic/racial slurs, when they feel they are in confortable surrondings.
Who knows if Vance will see the light while under the influence in recovery of his injuries.
When I first came across his name it was in a series of scandalous news stories about how he and a relative schemed to steal a property from another relative.
Then I saw that he was in a position as county councilman to vote on land use deals while simultaneously a voting member of an extremely secrative board, the Susses Land Trust, which benefits from Sussex County land use decisions by getting $10 thousand in cash (ostensibly to purchase environmentally sensative etc. land) for each housing unit bonus granted to a developer’s subdivision plan.
But who knows what they actually do with their money? The Trust never gave Joan Deaver an accounting of their spending or purchases when she asked some years ago before she got on council.
I had hoped that at least the Trust would have a priority to purchase level 4 land already deemed important to the state for green infrastructure, critter habitat etc. but as far as anyone can guess, the Trust can buy a good old buddies plot of land with no compunction at all. Ain’t Sussex public-private politics grand?
Vance’s condition has been upgraded from serious to fair, and according to WGMD:
