So who is Jeff Cragg?

Celia Cohen thinks Republicans have found their candidate to challenge Governor Markell next year. His name is Jeff Cragg. Who?

The potential candidate for governor is Jeff Cragg, a Brandywine Hundred businessman who is a party regular, more visible five or so years ago than recently. Cragg is a past co-chair of the New Castle County Republicans, considered the 2004 race for insurance commissioner, and once ran for Republican state chair. He used to be in insurance, but now he owns Mail Boxes Etc. in the Fairfax Shopping Center north of Wilmington with his wife.

“The Republican Party has to have an appropriate standard bearer, and I’m thinking about being that person,” Cragg said. “The state of the state is poor, and we need to make some changes, and I’d like to be part of that positive change.”

First, if the state of the state was so poor, I am thinking the Republican Party would be able to entice someone more well known and more experienced to run. Perhaps the state of the GOP is poor, mmmmm, Mr. Cragg?

Mr. Cragg, as a former co-chairman of the New Castle County Republicans, challenged Terry Strine in 2005 for the party leadership. He said back then that “[t]he job of the state Republican chairman is to build the state party in Delaware. I’m tired of watching Republicans lose races in Delaware. We need to make a change and start winning races.”

He apparently is so tired of seeing the Republicans lose that he will run himself so that he can see himself lose. I look forward to learning more of Mr. Cragg. There seems to be nothing on the internet about him but two Celia Cohen articles, and a LinkedIn profile, so it remains to be seen if the viability of Cragg’s candidacy is but a wish list in the mind of Cohen and her financial backers (i.e. Pete DuPont). I can’t even find a picture of him.
