Staton could be the beneficiary of teabag paranoia run amok
Chad Livengood’s story about the GOP primary for the 6th senate seat did a good job identifying the players and revealing the dynamic that could help Staton prevail.
The northern establishment guy:
Lewes resident Ernesto Lopez, a New Castle County native with ties to the northern GOP establishment, recently declared his candidacy for the seat. But Lopez was quickly met with suspicion from southern Republicans, who have been at odds with the party’s northern leadership since last year’s congressional primaries.
The teabag spoiler:
The day after Lopez declared his candidacy, Rehoboth Beach businessman Glen Urquhart shocked fellow Republicans by announcing that he, too, would run for the seat and force a primary. The winner will likely face Democrat Andy Staton in the November 2012 general election.
The crazy ass SC teabag base:
“What basically happened was some upstate politicians got together and decided that they would pick a candidate for Sussex,” said Christian Hudson of Lewes, a Republican district committeeman. “The folks I talk to hate that. They’re tired of the folks upstate cramming either an agenda or a politician down our throat.”
Who knows? Maybe Lopez and Urquhart will have a primary of ideas that leaves the winner in better shape going into the general election. Yeah. It could happen.

yeah and Christmas is in July
and pigs fly……..
Christian would know…..
Urquhart will be tough to beat, but I think Andy can do it. Andy will have to overcome the Urquhart’s organization, his money and his uber-motivated base. Andy can do it by outworking him, hitting every door, and speaking at every club, church or civic gathering.
I rode bicycles with Andy once, so I know that Andy can outwork anyone.
So Ernesto Lopez is a non-starter?
Ernesto is DOA. Why did he even waste the money to register?
Does anyone of sound mind think that the Colley lovers in that district would ever nominate a Hispanic who is also, gasp, a college professor?
It appears crunchy is a non-starter, as no one can even file for office yet.
Maybe he’ll read this thread and come to his sense in time to save a little money.
Urkel was on the Fatman’s show the other day talking about the usual nonsense. Gaffney, on the other hand, thinks that Urkel should step down as chair if he’s going to run in the 6th.
As a side note, the Fatman said on his show yesterday that Jimmy Carter was a liberal. Guess someone spiked his egg nog.
They called Churchhill the British Bulldog – Delmarva Conservatives have a Sniveling Coward…..
What’s amusing about all the GOP to do about this is that the new 6th District is a Dem district in both registration and voter turnout.
I had a feeling that it could be but wasn’t sure.
This will definitely help Andy but dont discount the Lopez guy. First off, Urkell shot a big part of his wad running for Congress. Second, GOP organization he had in 10 is now severely fractured. Third, if the GOP thinks a hard-right candidate can win in the new 6th, they are as smart as we give them credit for. Not.
MJ, how did your mayor race turn out?
Two days old, but still pretty fun:
