Mitt Romney And Self-Deportation
Via The Chicago Tribune:
Romney was asked how he would reconcile his pledge that, as president, he wouldn’t order mass deportations of undocumented immigrants with his promise to crack down on illegal immigration. His answer: “self-deportation.”
If the nation’s immigration laws are enforced Romney said, undocumented workers will return to their home countries once employment opportunities dry up. “If people don’t get work here, they’re going to self-deport to a place where they can get work,” he said.
I guess they’ll just load up their SUV, strap the dog to the top, and go somewhere else.
What’s his tax plan? Self-Taxation? Health Care? Self-Medication? Corporations? Self-Regulation? You know, I started this sentence as a joke, but I think I’ve just summed up the Republican Platform.
So… since my attempt at a joke failed, here’s a funny…

“If people don’t get work here, they’re going to self-deport to a place where they can get work,”
As I’ve posted before, I agree with this statement. It is a more humane way to deal with illegal immigration than any other I have heard. There is nothing to mock here, except to question Mitt’s sincerity (always a good bet).
The distinction I make though is that all efforts should be focused on illegal employers, and not on persecuting or harassing illegal immigrants, who should be given humanitarian support – but no jobs or long-term benefits – while they ponder their options.
There should also be abundant special-case exemptions for unusual hardship or family issues. And the State Department should negotiate “Homecoming” programs with the home countries to ease the transition. I’ll even throw in a free bus or plane ticket home.
I don’t believe those words in Mitt Romney’s mouth though. No way is he going to shut down illegal employers. I’d rather not have an immigration policy based on persecution and harassment of workers, while continuing to allow employers to rely on illegal labor.
1) For Mitt, the line amounts to self-immolation.
2) If we keep following Republican economic policies, we’ll see mass self-deportations.
3) BTW – Pandora is right about hitting on the whole GOP philosophy in a nutshell: What’s his tax plan? Self-Taxation? Health Care? Self-Medication? Corporations? Self-Regulation?
Good point politically. If Mitt is maligning 12 million illegal immigrants and Newt is attacking 42+ million food stamp recipients, yeah that’s self-immolation.
Not quite, Puck. Those illegal immigrants can’t vote. (And that’s why the Rethugs say all of us should have to produce a photo ID on Election Day.) However, by releasing his tax returns, Mitt is mocking far more than 15 million voters — every wage earner in the 15 percent bracket and above.
But their legal friends and family vote in sympathy with them, along with their ethnic communities in general.
Which is why the Cons want birth certificates and gun licenses so people can vote. Anything to keep the brown down. (unless, of course it’s Santorum)
How can right wing Rick Jenson get away with stating on the public airwaves that Mitt paid 15% in taxes…bold faced lie…he paid 13.9%. Michele Obama’s guest tonight will be a secretary..bet the secretary paid more.
Rick’s just rounding it up to the nearest 5 percent. Most of his audience hasn’t learned decimal points yet. And it’s close enough for right wing radio talk show work.
I hate to break it to you but ICE had a voluntary departure program about 2 years abo – where folks that wanted to “sefl-deport” in otherwords LEAVE the US stopped by and said “so long” on their way out
The program was discontinued as it was a miserable faliure. A total of 1 person used this program and we know that over 1 million undocs have left and Santorum even supported that fact last night.
So – lets look at self-deportation. Romney says leave – ok – you have a family and spouse here – so you leave to get yourself in order – once you leave there is an automatic 3 -10 year ban on returning into the US – on top of that, based on what country you are from there is a 15-23 year wait for an available visa.
SO you leave your children, family and spouse for what might be 33 years, worst case scenario – best case sceanario its a minimum of 3-5 years – IF they will even let you back in
What fool is going to do that??

I’m all for making case-by-case exceptions liberally to avoid splitting up families.

Illegally entering the US does not have a guaranteed happy ending. Perhaps when they get back they can explain to their countrymen that they were treated well, but there is no longer any work in the US for those who enter illegally.
based on the hundres of sexual assaults that have been reported in private prisons operated by Corrections Coorporation of America and the fact that “illegal immigration” is big business in the US – providing lots of jobs….for American and lots of profits for politicians that pass anti-immigrant legislation (see Jan Brewer and AZ)
I doubt those victims would say they were well treated
Then of course there is the 22 page report issued by FED DOJ on the bang up job Sheriff Joe Arpiao has done in Maricopa County, AZ – issued in Dec 15, 2011 after a 3 year investigation
the “worse case of civil rights violations ever seen” says the investigators…
and they have not even started on Alabama yet………
yup – folks were well treated in keeping with the high standards of the Constitution and Civil Rights protections of the United States. Regardless of HOW they entered or whether or not they over-stayed their visa (NOT a crime but a civil administrative violation of immigration law) no one deserves to be treted in that manner.
and PS – there is PLENTY of work for those that enter illegally – Im not saying I like it – but i dont see any local boys lining up to work the fields in GA or AL – we have covered all this before puck – i understand where you are coming from – but facts is facts and we need to find another way to change them facts – that I do agree with you on
