Sussex Musical Chairs
As you know, the retirement of Sen. George Bunting as set up a game of musical chairs downstate, which already had two games going on with the new 6th District Senate seat and the new 20th District House seat added to the area.
Last night, former Rep. Shirley Price spoke to the 38th RD Democratic Committee and announced that she will be running for her old seat. Republican Representative Hocker, who currently represents the 38th, is expected to run for the 20th Senate seat, which Sen. Bunting is vacating. Hocker is expected to announced his candidacy on April 12th at the Roxana Fire Hall.
Meanwhile, on the Republican side, we hear that Rep. Hocker’s son has decided not to run, but that Sussex County Councilman George Cole (R) is considering it.
If a Democrat can win that seat, it’d be Shirley Price.
Perhaps…..but not if she campaigns as a flaming liberal.
If Cole runs, then that opens his seat for George Parish (G-D Forbid!).
Shirley beats Cole. George’s highest negatives have always been close to his home.
A few observations:
1. Shirley’s hardly a flaming liberal, but her time has truly passed. This is going to be the battle of the retreads.
1(a). Where the hell are all the other Democrats in that district? Is someone who voters fired a decade ago really the best we’ve got?
2. Running would be a smart move for Cole. He still has two more years in his term on the council, so if he loses, he hasn’t really lost anything.
2(a). Cole also knows that the social conservatives are giving him the boot. Parrish’s announcement, though couched politely, was tantamount to a primary threat.
2(b). That said, I doubt Cole is going to run. Serving in the legislature would mean actual work.
anon,Beg to disagree .I live and work in 38th and SHIRLEY PRICE would be great candidate .The dynamic in 8-10 years has totally changed .Shirley got hurt from supporting RUTH ANN’s smoking ban which was unpopular down here . Now 10 years later everyone has moved on from that. Shirley will get alot of votes from republican and independent women. She is a experienced and dynamic speaker and our “best” candidate .
Its pretty simple. Shirley will be a far better candidate than George. She maintained her public profile and is well liked. George can be abrasive and his highest negatives are in the Bethany/Ocean View area. Decision to Price
