Mr. Kim’s Wild Ride

Filed in International by on April 13, 2012

Oops. North Korea went ahead with its rocket launch, I guess in hopes of forcing the world’s hand or some other nonsense. Two big problems. First the rocket disintegrated after launch, and then came the condemnation from the world.

Officials from Japan, South Korea and the United States, which had been monitoring for signs of the launching, condemned it as a belligerent act that endangered regional stability — even though it had failed.

Foreign ministers of the Group of 8 industrialized nations, including Russia, also criticized the launching. In separate comments carried by the Reuters news service, Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, said his country joined fellow Group of 8 members in condemning the launch.

“U.N. resolutions contain concrete calls not to conduct such launches,” Mr. Lavrov said, calling this “the shared approach” of Russia, China, the United States, South Korea and Japan.”

One of the really interesting things about this launch is that the N Koreans invited the international press to witness it. Since all of this newly welcomed press saw the thing destruct, the N Koreans actually had to admit to this failure on their state run media.
