Yes, the jet/twin towers photo is in incredibly poor taste.
Lets not forget that the Libertarian Party nominated Bob Barr as their presidential candidate not long ago. He WROTE the Patriot Act.
Welcome back Del. Libertarian, now if you could stop calling Republicans “libertarian republicans” you would be better off. Unless you start calling Democrats “libertarian democrats” for supporting gay marriage and legalizing pot.
I didn’t call Republicans “Libertarian Republicans,” SussexAnon. I used the title of a blog that picked up a post. What the hell am I supposed to do? Change the title of his blog?
As far as the picture: what’s in worse taste? Not admitting that we inflicted just as large a wound on our own civil society by our response to 9/11 as anything Al Qaeda did, or pretending that we didn’t do so, and declaring imagery off-limits because it is uncomfortable?
Not to defend Barr who has plenty of bad stuff to answer for all through his career. But SussexAnon is just fibbing to say Barr “wrote” the Patriot Act. Not hardly. From Wikipedia:
“Since leaving Congress in 2003, Barr has become a vocal opponent of the Patriot Act and has stated that he voted for it reluctantly[11] and regrets voting for it, only agreeing because the Bush administration promised not to attempt to expand the granted powers or use them for non-terrorism purposes, and the administration agreed to report to Congress on their usage.[81] Barr says that the Bush administration promptly ignored these three promises given to Congress and has used the powers granted from the Patriot Act to further erode due process of law even in matters unrelated to terrorism.[81] Barr claims that the Clinton administration did much of the same thing.[34] In 2005 — the year the Patriot Act was due for renewal — Barr helped found an organization called Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances, a bipartisan group dedicated to eliminating aspects of the Patriot Act that could potentially affect law-abiding citizens rather than terrorists, and to “restore traditional checks and balances on government power so the country can effectively fight terror without sacrificing the rights of innocent Americans, rights that are guaranteed by the Constitution.”[82] Barr still serves as the group’s chairman.”
“He voted for the first USA PATRIOT Act,[57] but only after his amendments adding “sunset clauses” were added to the final bill.[58]”
It’s edgy, but not “poor taste” 9/11 was used by conservatives to destroy our civil liberties… just like OBL intended. Bringing down the towers was not alqueda’s goal…. it was to cause us to give up our freedoms and fortune by fighting unwinable wars in black holes. The patriot act was the magnum opus of all those who hated America for it’s freedoms, the GOP (and the demonrats who voted for it) were just (f)tools of the terrorists.
So where do you stand on the repeal of the Patriot Act?
jason
Actually, I agree.

Unfortunately it was not only conservatives who helped destroy our civil liberties. Fearful liberals and moderates have aided, abetted, voted for, ignored, and rationalized the current administration’s continuing war on American civil liberties. Bush tortured folks and started the shredding of the Constitution. Obama claims to right to have American citizens (a) detained indefinitely even when found not guilty by the courts; (b) killed without any due process or review; and (c) just extended the government’s ability to keep investigative records on Americans with absolutely NO connection to terrorism.
Unfortunately it was not only conservatives who helped destroy our civil liberties. Fearful liberals and moderates have aided…
I don’t think you can call them liberals or even moderates. Name a conservative victory since 2001, and Democrats likely provided the margin of victory. They are conservatives.
They tend to be the same Democrats who continuously enabled the Bush agenda beginning with the 2001 tax cuts, and continued into the Obama administration to deliver the baffling conservative victories in the Pelosi/Reid Congress.
It should also disqualify anyone from calling themselves a libertarian or libertarian-republican.(Bob Barr)
I stand for the repeal of the Patriot Act and was against it from the get-go.
You aren’t going to grow your party with an image that many people will find in poor taste. But thats ok, perhaps it is not your intention to grow your party. You aren’t the first obstinate libertarian I have encountered.
I am not a member of the Libertarian Party; nor is that a requirement to be a libertarian than liberals are all required to be Democrats.
I was also against the Patriot Act from the beginning. You can look it up in my archives. Even jason could not find a single instance wherein I supported the Bush Presidency.
I refused to support Bob Barr for President. You can look it up in my archives.
I am not interested in growing a political party, and–to be bluntly honest–I don’t really care about your assessment of my taste.
Let’s see: that would be 1, 2, 3, 4 things you managed to get wrong in a single post.
If “obstinate” means refusing to roll over because you didn’t like something I did or said, I guess you’ll be disappointed to meet a great many obstinate libertarians, liberals, conservatives, progressives etc., since (last I checked, but that was yesterday) nobody died and appointed you into any political or moral authority.
(Oh, and if you don’t like the blog, don’t visit. That, rather than attempting to browbeat somebody, would be a libertarian solution.)
As to the picture:
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. That being the case, poor taste or not, the picture defines a decade. All that is lacking is a picture of the resultant rubble to illustrate what is left of the dream called “America.”
As to terms such as democrat, republican, conservative, progressive, liberal, libertarian, patriot, ______________(fill in the blank), they are interchangeable, meaningless plaques on a unisex bathroom door. Shake etch a sketch, continue argument, do nothing, while the jails fill with occupiers and “Illegals” and the Kleptocrats remain free to continue their plunder as if 2008 never happened reaping the profits of congressional insider trading on the likes of CCA and GEO! Oh wait! Yes! I do believe there has been a fine or two.
Well then, truth, justice and the American way has triumphed as North Korea and Pakistan use our attempted bribes to spit in our face and as we have been saying for, oh at least a few years, watch Azerbijan???
Please forgive my cynicism. I find it increasingly difficult to find a sanctuary. A Patriot Guard Ride Captain suggested that my appearance was just cause to be profiled and Occupy Tallahassee’s first “official” act was to declare solidarity with the indigenous peoples of Tallahassee???? It was a wasteland before being settled and will be a bigger wasteland when Rick Scott is finished.
By obstinate I meant being so self righteous in your position that you could not even conceive of another point of view. And yes, they exist in all political forms. And you are free to not come to delaware liberal and browbeat me(libertarian solution).
So you arent a member of the Libertarian Party, nor are you interested in growing it as a party. Got it. Next thing you will be announcing you arent even in Delaware. Forgive my assumption that, you know, might actually BE a libertarian, because, you know, unlike liberals, they are an ACTUAL party.
Thanks for clearing that up.
You might want to check your math, I never accused you of (personally) supporting the patriot act.
I never claimed to be any political or moral authority. I am sure as a libertarian you can appreciate my free speech rights to have an opinion just as much as your right to post a provocative image. Did I say take it down? Did I call Al Sharpton to set up a protest? Heck no. Run, Forrest, Run,go with all speed.
I wish you great success in your Delaware(I assume the state, not the city in Ohio or county in Pennsylvania) Libertarian(but not in a party affiliated sort of way) blog.
“You’re right. I should clear that up by no longer blogging anonymously, and use my actual identity.”
Real name or anonymous is irrelevant. Your screen name could be PennelopePitstopPatriot and it wouldn’t change the discussion. Surely you can see the confusion with the name “DelawareLibertarian” to find out you are not a member of or affiliated with the libertarian party. Its ok, now we all know and can move on. And once again, thanks for clearing that up.
DelawareLiberal has had discussions about real name vs. anonymous posting and I believe they felt it was appropriate to respect a persons privacy and their decision not to post their full name. If you don’t believe, just ask DelawareDem, Pandora, El Som, Geezer or Jason330, I am sure those are their real names.
I’ve got to wonder about the picture on the front page. It’s in quite poor taste.

Take your choice. I made mine.

Steve, the photo is in bad taste, which has nothing to do with the erosion of “civil liberties”.
It’s edgy, but not “poor taste” 9/11 was used by conservatives to destroy our civil liberties… just like OBL intended. I blame George Bush for our enfeebled sensibilities. If Steve takes the picture down George Bush and the terrorists win.
for that comment, jason wins.

Helping to pass the patriot act disqualifies anyone from calling them self a liberal…. and that includes any current president that helped extend it.
It should also disqualify anyone from calling themselves a libertarian or libertarian-republican.(Bob Barr)

You’re right. I should clear that up by no longer blogging anonymously, and use my actual identity.
I think the picture is spot on. I still can’t believe we have the “Patriot Act.” It’s one of the few things that I slap the “anti American” label on.
