Monday Open Thread [04/16/12]
Okay, I admit it, I only watch hockey when the playoffs arrive. Yeah, I guess people could consider me a fair-weather fan, I just like to think I am watching Season 2. There are teams the Flyers want to beat badly and the Penguins are one, so I couldn’t be happier right now. And, what a beautiful sound it was as Flyers fans chanted, “You can’t beat us!”
It is not just scalding disappointment the Penguins are facing now.
Not simply a humbling elimination by a detested rival.
Not merely a profound embarrassment that will linger and sting all summer.
No, being swept out of the playoffs by Philadelphia — a very real possibility after the Flyers’ 8-4 victory in Game 3 of their opening-round series Sunday at Wells Fargo Center — would be far more significant than that.
It would be a humiliation of historic proportions.
BTW, my younger brother who is a huge Flyers fan had this to say about Sidney Crosby, “He is a cheap shot artist and a crybaby” and “Crosby is the lil’est bitch in the world”. Born the year after the Flyers won their last Stanley Cup, I hope my brother gets the victory he’s been waiting for.

Just listened to an interview with NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan, and I am much clearer now than I was before about how he administers punishment for cheap shots. What became clear is that injuries play a role in how many games a player is suspended, if any, and not much else. By the letter of the law, 3 Penguins should be suspended as a result of their actions in yesterday’s game. Arron Asham is a no-brainer after he cross-checked Brayden Schenn and punched him in the back of the head while Schenn was laid out on the ice. Match penalties are an automatic suspension. I don’t see how the NHL would rescind the match penalty. Expect 4-6 games for Asham.
Talented punk bitch James Neal deserves at least 2 games for headhunting Couturier and Giroux, and Craig Adams received an instigator penalty in the last 5 minutes of a game, which carries an automatic one game ban.
The Penguins put on a disgraceful display yesterday. The NHL should fine the franchise $500,000 just for embarrassing the league to that extent. Hope all the Flyers are OK and come out Wednesday night focused on winning the game and sending this $@#%$##@ home.

IF the Flyers do get the Sweep on Wednesday, they could enjoy some nice R and R before the next round. All of the other teams in the East are tied up in their respective series at 1 game apiece. I’d love to see the Rangers knocked out by the Senators.

Member of the British House of Lords is suspended for offering a £10million bounty for the capture of Barack Obama, or George W. Bush. Although Bush seems an afterthought. This bounty is being offered by a Labour peer and the first Muslim peer. Suspension seems not quite adequate here, right?
