We know have a fourth choice [NCCo. Exec]

Filed in National by on May 30, 2012

And some of you are breathing a sign of relief. Jonathan Husband, the Engineering and Environmental Services manager in the county’s Special Services Department, has announced today that he is running for County Executive.

[Husband] said he has been planning his run since 2007. Husband assumed it would be an open seat after former County Executive Chris Coons’ second term ended, but that changed when Coons became a U.S. senator in 2010. Clark was automatically elevated from county council president as Coons’ replacement and is now running for his first four-year term.

I don’t know Jonathan Husband, and I didn’t know of his plans. I suspect he kept those plans close to the vest. I hope he has used that time since 2007 (5 years!) to craft a great network of support and build a campaign warchest. Yes, you can tell I am highly suspect of this claim that he has been planning the race for 5 years. If was planning to run, he should have started making himself visible the moment Chris Coons resigned.

What I suspect happened is he was thinking about running, but then Coons got himself elected to the U.S. Senate and Clark succeeded to the Executive position, meaning that Clark would be running as an incumbent with an improving economy, a more difficult task for someone with no political history or name recognition. So Husband resigned himself to not making the race. But now the toxic Gordon is running and Clark looks vulnerable, with Shahan not proving to be the third choice salvation, so there is an opening for him after all.

Yeah, that’s what went down. Let’s not pretend otherwise.

So I look forward to hearing from Husband in the campaign. Here’s hoping that his campaign catches fire.

Right now he is totally immersed in choosing a logo.

  2. Linda says:

He better be careful . . . the logo police on here are watching . . . hahahaha

  3. tobyz says:

Maybe he can use McCain’s old logo, since Gordon already used Obama’s. No sense in being original.

  4. mediawatch says:

I don’t know Husband well but all my dealings with him over the years have been favorable and positive.
He will be a refreshing (and clean) alternative to Clark and Gordon. I hope he can articulate his vision well.
Yes, he’s getting in late, but he’s not anonymous and the media will treat him far more seriously than Shahan.
    I wish him well.

  5. Linda says:

As long as he doesn’t use red, white or blue and a circle he is safe!

This race makes my head hurt.

You all are seriously casting sarcasm toward a logo? I suppose if Gordon spent more time on creating a more original logo then you’d bash him for not putting more time in for working on strategies to run the county govt more efficiently.

  8. mediawatch says:

I thought Gordon already had a strategy: boost revenues by encouraging real estate transfers, move cash from fund to fund to create the apearance of prosperity, give the peons some fun at Frontierland at Carousel, feed them ice cream once a year at Rockwood, and fill staff vacancies as often as possible with his remaining pals from the police department.

  9. tobyz says:

Don’t forget, donate millions of dollars of county money in last year of term to charity while under investigation by the feds.

  10. Linda says:

Well the charities made out . . . is that a bad thing?

  11. tobyz says:

With the real estate transfer tax in the toilet, the money (i.e. $1million to Easter Seals) could probably been used more wisely. While charity is great, the first obligation is to the taxpayer. Perhaps the money should have been used to prevent the deficit from the loss of revenue that Gordon saddeled the following administrations with. Just a thought.

  12. tobyz says:

BTW, the $1Million to Easter Seals is just one of the donations…

  13. mediawatch says:

The whole grants deal turned out to be pretty tawdry. A nice way of rewarding groups that employed his friends or represented voting blocs with which he wanted to curry favor.
While not an entirely appropriate use of public funds, he could have done it properly by announcing that the county had $x million to award in grants and then asking non-profits to submit proposals on how they would use the money.

praise the lord! lol…anyone but mr pam scott will do for me

  15. JJ says:

Big question: Can Husband raise any $$$ and get widely known in 100 days? He will need money to beat Clark, unless Clark and Gordon pummel each other with negatives and he slides through the middle unscathed.
If he does get some $$, I hope he will ‘husband’ his resources and use them wisely. Sorry, couldn’t resist!

  16. mediawatch says:

If Husband has some positive ideas, I’m sure he will articulate them clearly and effectively, thus gaining the needed attention. As for the fundraising, that will depend to some extent on his relationship with Coons. The former county exec has no great fondness for Clark and to say he despises Gordon would be an understatement. If Coons decides to inject himself into this race, no matter how subtly, it will definitely be beneficial to Husband.

  17. tobyz says:

On the contrary, Coons has been very supportive of Clark in the last 1 1/2 years and he did not have a good relationship with Husband, as he was one of the Gordon faithful that was left over. There is no way Husband will get Coons’ support.

  18. Geezer says:

“Well the charities made out . . . is that a bad thing?”

Yes. Taxes to the county are not intended for giveaways to charity, especially to the tune of $15 million. It was a naked attempt to taint the potential jury pool, and the mentality behind it — Gordon/Freebery generated the surplus and so should be allowed to spend it however they wanted — shows exactly what Tom Gordon’s problem as a public “servant” is: He thinks of himself as an absolute ruler.

  19. Geezer says:

“anyone but mr pam scott will do for me”

Just as anyone but Mr. Sherry Freebery will do for me.

  20. Linda says:

Well lucky you Geezer now you can have a “Husband”. . . LOL
