Crystal Ball: Denn takes early lead in the 2016 Governor’s Race; Biden’s Future

So it seems the supporters of both State Treasurer Chip Flowers and Lt. Governor Matt Denn got a workout yesterday and today. Both camps took turns voting early and often. At the end of the poll, after 24 hours, it’s Matt Denn with 53% to Flowers’ 43%. It looks like we will have another competitive Democratic primary in four years, although a lot can happen between now and then. This got me to thinking: what are Beau Biden’s future plans?

He is serving his second term as Attorney General right now. The office is not term limited, so he can run for a third term. And he will probably do that since there is nothing else open in 2014, unless he wants to challenge Chip Flowers in a primary or Auditor Tom Wagner in the general. But running for another row office would be a lateral move. He won’t challenge Senator Coons, who is up for reelection in 2014. He won’t John Carney either. So unless Coons decides to retire (very unlikely), or unless the Congressional seat is not filled by John Carney (caused by his losing to Kovach this year), Biden’s only options are to retire or run for reelection.

Obviously we have the offices of Governor and Lt. Governor up in 2016. If Flowers is actually going to primary Denn instead of going for the Lt. Governor spot, then Biden can slide in there. But, I don’t know, I am not feeling an executive future for the young Biden. I think he will bide his time until Carper retires in 2018.
