Schwartzkopf To Announce Re-Election Campaign

Filed in Delaware by on July 30, 2012

My state rep, House Majority Leader (and soon to be Speaker) Pete Schwartzkopf, sent out this news release late last week:

House Majority Leader Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf will formally kickoff his campaign for the 14th District House seat on Wednesday, August 1.

Schwartzkopf, a Democrat, has served the 14th District since 2002, representing Rehoboth Beach, Henlopen Acres, Cape Helopen State Park, Angola and the surrounding areas. The newly redistricted 14th District will also bring Dewey Beach back into the district after 10 years. A retired Delaware State Police captain and former Troop 7 commander, Schwartzkopf has been involved in the community and with various charitable groups for years.

The announcement will take place at 5 p.m. on the Rehoboth boardwalk, with Governor Jack Markell on hand to introduce him.

Come on down, enjoy a nice day at the beach, and be part of Pete’s reelection effort. He is currently being opposed by some teabagger Libertarian, as the GOP doesn’t have its shit together on this side of the county.

How many voters does Cape Henlopen State Park have?

  2. MJ says:

There don’t have to be voters in an area for it to be represented by someone.

  3. Steve Newton says:

Has Schwartzkopf made a commitment to sign the Marriage Equality petition and to support marriage equality legislation next year?

  4. chlorophil says:

what difference does it make? are you going to instead vote for the libertarian?

  5. Steve Newton says:

The difference is that the Libertarian candidate, Margaret Melson has publicly supported marriage equality and signed the petition. I wanted to know if Schwartzkopf has done so. I know he supported civil unions, but I cannot find anything about him and marriage equality.

Seems reasonable to ask what a candidate’s stand on an issue is. . . .

  6. cassandra_m says:

It is a reasonable question and hope that MJ gets Pete to answer this.

  7. chlorophil says:

It’s not reasonable. I mean, it might be a nice thing to know, but no person who cares about the issue is going to vote for the libertarian over Pete.

  8. Steve Newton says:

Just because you don’t care about LGBT rights as a major issue doesn’t mean that other people don’t.

And, frankly, he’s going to be Majority Leader again, so he needs to take a stand; don’t voters with questions about candidate positions deserve a straight answer, or do you think Pete should simply be anointed without bothering to have tell people what he thinks?

  9. chlorophil says:

Who said I dont care about it as a major issue? In fact, I do. Thats exactly why I know that no matter what the libertarian’s position, or Pete’s, I’m still going to vote for Pete. IF gay marriage was a litmus test, none of us would have voted for President Obama.

  10. MJ says:

Steve, give Pete a call. He’s listed at anywho.com.

As for Libertarians, they’re just rethuglicans who think they can fool everyone by not calling themselves rethuglicans.

  11. Steve Newton says:

MJ, your opinion on Libertarians is about as useful as your opinion on most other subjects. But you’ve learned your lines well.

I’ll ask Pete publicly what he thinks, because he ought to have to take a public position on LGBT rights.

  12. MJ says:

Professor, Mary Ann & Ginger are calling you.

You know I don’t give a rat’s ass what you think of me. And this is not an issue in the 14th. BTW, Pete is going to be Speaker of the House, not Majority Leader next session.

  13. Steve Newton says:

If it’s not an issue in the 14th, it is in the state.

    (And you’re right–I miswrote–Speaker.)

But explain to me again why it isn’t a fair public question?

  14. cassandra_m says:

I’d like to know why it isn’t a fair question too. I’m not voting for either of the people in this particular race, but the presumed winner is going to be the Speaker of the House with some influence over the House’s agenda. Asking about broad issues that might affect all of us seems fair.

  15. Steve Newton says:

And Pete just answered it for me on Facebook without equivocation: “My position has been the same since I was first elected. I support marriage equality.”

That wasn’t so difficult, was it?

  16. Mark Ladd says:

Always a good idea to go right to the source with a question instead of a forum that that person may not read.

  17. MJ says:

I never said it wasn’t a fair public question. Being on the 14th RD Democratic Committee, it’s not an issue for us. We know Pete and we know where his heart is. I simply told you go call him and ask him.

@Mark – Pete reads DL religiously.

  18. cassandra_m says:

We know Pete and we know where his heart is.

So is this meant to claim that Pete is for marriage equality?

Or is this meant to indicate that you’ve decided that this isn’t important to you in this particular race?

If you are asking people to be part of his re-election effort it seems that you’d be able to answer some fairly basic questions.

  19. MJ says:

I didn’t decide ANYTHING, Cass. Living in the 14th and serving on the RD, this IS NOT AN ISSUE for us with Pete because WE know him. I’m not part of his campaign team (the 14th RD, for whatever reason, separates itself from Pete’s campaign team). I suggested, earlier, that you pick up the phone and call Pete (he’s very accessible) and ask. Pretty simple when you come to think about it.
