Thursday Open Thread [8.16.12]
It’s Thursday and I’m looking for excuses to play hooky tomorrow. First in line as an excuse is a road trip to Philly to go get one of DNic’s roast pork sandwiches — DiNic’s was named America’s Best Sandwich by Adam Richman on the Travel Channel. Who else wants to go?
Cory Booker is not a fan of soundbite reporting for politics:
He is right, of course. I listen to NPR and they giddily trot out the soundbites and then smugly ask themselves when the campaigns will get to substance. Even though the President or VP may have spoken for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, they just pull out the attack soundbites and tell us that this is what the campaign is.
Gratuitous George Clooney picture!
Gratuitous plugging of our friends projects!
Our pal Rachel Schain is working on a new album and is looking for some support to get it produced via Kickstarter. Check out Rachel’s project here — Pushing Up LilacFaces! — and help her out. You know you always wanted your name in the list of Thanks Yous on a CD!

Two meetings tonight for parents and educators, unfortunately both scheduled for the same time, five miles apart in Dover.
The first meeting is a meeting between the Delaware State Board of Education and local boards. This meeting caught the attention of John Young last week, who confirmed it was open to the public. Kilroy suggests Pencader parents show up to voice their concerns. Here’s the agenda: egov.delaware.gov/pmc/Event/Details/18447. The meeting is from 5-8 pm tonight at the John W. Collette Building, 35 Commerce Way, Suite 1, Dover, DE, 19904.
The second meeting is the second in the series of three regulatory review meetings DOE is holding to fulfill Executive Order No. 36. DOE is asking Do you have specific ideas about regulations that should be modified or eliminated? If so, we want to hear from you. Teachers, if you think you have too much red tape, this is a must-attend. This meeting is from 6-8 p.m. at the Department of Agriculture office, 2320 South DuPont Highway, Dover.
I hear there’s food at the first meeting which starts at 5pm, so maybe you can drop in there for an hour and hit the buffet before coming to the second meeting 🙂
The final DOE regulatory review meeting will be held next Thursday in New Castle County:
Thursday, Aug. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the New Castle County Government Center, 77 Reads Way, New Castle.
Friday = Beach.
Wingnut group is sending letters to RNC convention attendees to try to Dump Romney at the convention.
Bwah-haha-hah …
Beth Miller, the state GOP treasurer, switches to the Democratic Party and gets the boot (though she wants to switch back) – Ceila has the scoop.
Hey Cass, thanks for the heads up on Rachel’s Kickstarter. Might have missed it otherwise.
“Friday = Beach.”
Yea, Myrtle Beach. I live at Rehoboth/Dewey/OC and Myrtle beats this stretch hands down. I guess all that great sand I remember from my youth has migrated down here (M.B.).
The infrastructure is better planned, however dining plans must be surgically precise. Rehobo def has a better quality of food at more, albeit smaller venues. There are a few diamonds here though.
But again, even after the millions we spent on Delaware beaches, the Myrtle Beach (and relative beaches) are far superior to any in Delaware.
Cass, thank you for the plug! Mark, thank you for the support! 🙂
I should write another blog post. I’m just afraid of incurring the wrath of the downstaters…
Rachel, us downstaters only sometimes bite 🙂
