Secrecy envelopes RNC’s racist incident
Two GOP delegates threw nuts at a black CNN camera woman and taunted her saying, “This is how we feed animals.” They were ejected, but shortly thereafter the Romney campaign, the GOP and CNN threw a blanket of secrecy over the incident and more than 24 hours later, the secrecy is holding.
Nearly 24 hours after an ugly incident in which two attendees at the Republican National Convention in Tampa were ejected after throwing nuts at a black CNN camerawoman and saying, “This is how we feed animals,” remarkably few details about the particulars of the incident have emerged.
CNN, convention organizers, the RNC, and the managers of the venue itself have all either declined to provide more information about what exactly happened or have referred questions to one of the other entities involved.
I get why the GOP doesn’t want to broacast the fact that its delegates are bunch of racists motherfuckers. But CNN? Why would they be playing along with this news blackout? What would induce a cable news channel to not report the news?
A commenter at TPM suggests that CNN is waiting until a similar incident happens at the DNC, so they can run a “see- they all do it” story. That actually sounds plausible.
i just…
A dudge report commenter just made the wingnut comment of the year:
What the hell is wrong with CNN? Jason is absolutely correct. They have a duty to report the news — even if it involves themselves and they’d rather not be the subject of a story — with more than a 5-paragraph brief on their website. I’m guessing they have received subtle hints from the RNC that any in-depth reporting of this could result in a lack of access to the candidates. Shameful behavior from CNN.
If the people throwing the peanuts were black, CNN and every other news organization would have gone wall-to-wall on this news.
But it is a good look at how news organizations collude to hide the worst behavior of the right and hide the fact that they are a seriously disturbed bunch. African Americans who routinely show up on CNN (I’m looking at you Donna Brazile) need to stand down from appearing on that network until they get their act together.
If the person who was the target of the peatnut attack was white, would this just be a-holes calling a member of the Lame Stream Media an “animal”?… ya know… like how Glen Beck is a little piggie? you cant call hate crime just because of the people involved.
I don’t know what you are trying to say, but if you don’t think the incident was related to race, you have bats in your belfry.
I’m with Jason, Ben. What are you saying, because I can’t make sense of it.
And look at their behavior when the Puerto Rican Chairwoman took to the podium. Reince Priebus had to step in.
Im saying the only thing that makes it appear racist is that she is black. they didnt yell any other words… and as for the USA USA chants… why couldnt it have been working class people upset at a mega rich 0.1%er? Also using one example to qualify the other is like saying “look at how some people at Occupy assulted that girl… it must mean they all do it.”
When conseratives (or anyone) act like ass hats toward someone of a different race, it isnt a racist attack just based on that. They could jsut be jerks. Other things we know is that Foxians HATE other news organizations and women. no one here has one shred of proof other than circumstantial evidence…… no more proof than anyone has that Obama hates white people because some crazy preacher had some out of context sermons wind up on youtube. NOt that is makes the incident ok in any way at all… kudos to the event organizers for tossing them out on their asses. Why cant this just be “rednecks bully reporter, get ejected”
my opinion. clearly no one else’s. fire away
GOP delegates are bunch of racist motherfuckers. I think we can all agree on that much.
I just watched that video a few times… I am confused, and not at all certain that most people were chanting U-S-A. There is some plausible deniability. Apparently this was immediately after the rules changes were forced through on an ambiguous voice vote. Almost every animated chanter was shouting something other than USA.
I think that the Romney people were trying to drown out the Paulites with a generic chant. Unfortunately, the next speaker was the woman from Puerto Rico.
That said, CNN should at least report what did happen so people don’t have to guess.
Im going to defend/side with Ben here
Caution is best!
I also watched the shouting down of the delegate from PR- and it’s hard to say that it was intended for her or PR- it may have been at Prience Reibus (whatever) I saw so e mouthing ” seat them now” I can’t say the USA chant was against her coz she is from PR and in context the vote to not seat the delegtes from. miane had just happened
But those that threw the peanuts- should not have happened- and who really knows the cause
Racism or stupidity- who knows!!
But let’s find out- secrecy is not good here – but jumping to conclusions is not eithet
Lets not go all Brietbart !!
Didn’t really sound like USA to me. And I don’t know much about Reince Priebus, but every time I see the guy he looks like he could use an injection of fun. Humor. Something. Poor guy always looks and sounds like his dog just died.
Ben, I don’t know about you, but when I read about folks throwing nuts at black people and saying, “this is how we feed animals,” well, that sounds pretty racist to me. In 2012 America, I’d like to be proven wrong. Wouldn’t calling the perpetrators “rednecks” be some other kind of “ism”?
But those that threw the peanuts- should not have happened- and who really knows the cause
Racism or stupidity- who knows!!
Ignoring, of course, the long-standing stereotypes (as in all the way back to the creation of this country) of black people as animals and/or not quite human which was a justification of their long-standing mistreatment.
Bats in the belfry.
“Ignoring, of course, the long-standing stereotypes (as in all the way back to the creation of this country) of black people as animals and/or not quite human which was a justification of their long-standing mistreatment.”
while upholding the stereotype that all conservatives are racists… and Mike, you’re right… i shouldn’t have said rednecks, rich doners can be pricks too. Also bear in mind the press at these events are usually herded around like cattle. Ive often seen a gaggle of press in a roped off area. Not defending the act OR racism…. just sayin… Obama isnt Hitler and all acts of someone (or even republicans) being rude to a non white person are racist.
Bats in the belfry indeed.
It’s not bats in the belfry- and I’m not ignoring the stereotypes either
I saying we don’t know what the motivation was- maybe it was racism. Maybe it was sexism. _ who the hell knows exce
It’s not bats in the belfry- and I’m not ignoring the stereotypes either
I saying we don’t know what the motivation was- maybe it was racism. Maybe it was sexism. _ who the hell knows except the two clowns that did it
But also- when we jump to conclusions without fact we are no better that Brietbart or in manufacturing a reason we sound and act like James o’keffee
So onthe rush to define and ascribe motive lets not become what we despise
And sniping at each other over shit like this doesn’t help either
Cass I Understand your anger and you r right to have it
I’m annoyed if the reason was either race or gender – but there is sooo much stuff we do have evidence for that is wrong
And we SHOULD be angry about that I don’t have a whole lot left over for something that may or may not be bullshit stupidity.
@sb
“Also bear in mind the press at these events are usually herded around like cattle. Ive often seen a gaggle of press in a roped off area. ”
That actually was my first thought when I saw the story. Unacceptable behavior to treat the press (who the politicians depend on) as cattle. But who knows what their thoughts were when throwing the peanuts.
naw… i think i agree with the idea that im crazy…. it’s easier that way and no one has to reconsider their pre judgments about a group of people.
You know, there is a pattern here. Actually, more than a pattern, a strategy. Palin tapped into this until McCain became frightened and attempted to put a stop to it. The Romney campaign is basing its campaign strategy on it. He won’t pull the welfare ads, even though every fact checker has declared them to be false. He won’t pull them because they work with a certain percentage of his base and tap into racial resentments.
These incidents aren’t happening in a vacuum. They aren’t simply a few bad apples acting out. These people simply aren’t bright enough to keep the strategy secret and speak in code. And while they are definitely loose cannons, they are not off message. They are hearing the message loud and clear – Food Stamp President, Welfare, Anglo-Saxon, Un-American, Kenyan, Muslim, etc.
Giving these incidents the benefit of the doubt is no longer an option for me. There are simply too many incidents like this to dismiss. And I’m through with “sane” Republicans whining about how it’s unfair to paint them with a broad brush. They courted this group, wooed them with the siren song of dog whistles, and now want to draw a distinction between the throwing of peanuts and calling Obama the Food Stamp President. Sorry, not buying it. I also refuse to set the racism bar at using the N word – which seems to be where this is heading.
There is no dont a Campaign Of Dog whistling – and some take the sound
Meant only for those who do get the coding and act out on it
But I’m not sure the RE-thuglicans are that smart any more – they sure have attracted the gender/race challenged crowd
And there is no doubt that this country turned away for inclusiveness and became xenophobic in a rather short time
The question is- how do we change it? My defi ately better half simply said last nigh
” look, it the last gasp of a dying breed, they are desperate amd will do anything in their power to retain control because they are scare- its no use, we will out number them , if not in 2
2016 then on 2020. It’s just a matter of time”
I wish I was so calm and pragmatic about it – but the other half is a very calm patient individual. And has been looking forward to this period in history their whole life- having been the target for racism for most of it.
So ONWARD! Let the games begin
Like the PREZ said the other day •” don’t boo, VOTE!”
The GOP’s plan goes beyond simple trying to anger old white people into voting based on the Nixonian “southern strategy.”
The movement to deny the vote to minorities is a story that isn’t getting as much play as it should.

Now – pull out all the stops and condem the racist pigs
Some of us weren’t waiting for your permission, Aoine.
I think Jason is owed a beer or something…
They all do it. Move along now, nothing to see here folks.
