Wayne LaPierre Doubles Down On His Paranoid Fantasies
If you ever wondered what drove Adam Lanza’s mother to build a personal arsenal this might be the answer.
Following President Obama’s call for a vote on proposed gun safety legislation in his State of the Union speech, Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the National Rifle Association, on Wednesday issued a call-to-action for gun owners to prepare for post-apocolyptic-style scenarios and rally against the gun control movement.
In an op-ed published by the Daily Caller, LaPierre outlined a three-step plan of action to preserve gun rights against an administration that he argues poses a serious threat to the Second Amendment.
Go read LaPierre’s manifesto and then explain to me how this man is in charge of anything. Here are some choice bits:
It has always been sensible for good citizens to own and carry firearms for lawful protection against violent criminals who prey on decent people.
During the second Obama term, however, additional threats are growing. Latin American drug gangs have invaded every city of significant size in the United States. Phoenix is already one of the kidnapping capitals of the world, and though the states on the U.S./Mexico border may be the first places in the nation to suffer from cartel violence, by no means are they the last.
About that Phoenix kidnapping claim. PolitiFact rates it as false.
Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Riots. Terrorists. Gangs. Lone criminals. These are perils we are sure to face—not just maybe. It’s not paranoia to buy a gun. It’s survival. It’s responsible behavior, and it’s time we encourage law-abiding Americans to do just that.
Forgive me for not sharing LaPierre’s paranoid fantasies. I don’t live in a world where natural disasters bring out the worst in people. Quite the opposite. In my experience with blizzards and hurricanes and terrorist attacks Americans helped other Americans. Americans didn’t stand at their front doors with AR-15s and threaten to shoot those in need.
Moving on to page two of the manifesto… It’s all about fundraising for the NRA. Seriously. So we’ll skip that and move on to this:
Leftists tend to hate anything that has an image of being strong, good and successful. They hate America, they hate Western civilization, they hate white males, they hate rationality.
Whoops! That isn’t from Lapierre’s manifesto, it’s from the Unabomber’s. Forgive me for confusing the two. Here’s LaPierre’s closing paragraphs.
We have so much to be proud of as gun owners, shooters and freedom lovers. That pride, especially when it’s not hidden in the closet, is itself a form of protection for the Second Amendment.
We will not surrender. We will not appease. We will buy more guns than ever. We will use them for sport and lawful self-defense more than ever. We will grow the NRA more than ever. And we will be prouder than ever to be freedom-loving NRA patriots. And with your help, we will ensure that the Second Amendment remains America’s First Freedom.
We will Stand And Fight.
Oh my. Wayne LaPierre is the gift that keeps giving. I’m not entirely sure LaPierre is nuts, but I think his intended audience is – and LaPierre knows how to separate the nuts from their money.

“We will buy more guns…” That’s the money shot. The NRA is nothing more than a shill for gun manufacturers. From Remington’s perspective, gun anarchy is good for business, so the NRA is an unabashed booster for gun anarchy – even though 65% of the NRA’s members are not in favor of gun anarchy.
LaPierre is a sick cynical fuck.
Wow. The Unibomber sounds like a Delaware Politics commenter, yes?
I think that the lesson that these gun whackos teach is that if you see yourself as part of a “target-rich environment”, then you have accepted a life where you are always prey. Me, I do not want to get into the habit of living like (or thinking like) a perpetual victim.
DD may have included this in one of his Polling Reports, but it is worth revisiting here — GOP’s Obsession With Guns Stands To Drive Women Vote In The 2014 Election: Poll
They arent shills. That is actually the scary part. They arent shills for the gun industry anymore than Al Gore is a shill for solar power.
These guys are true believers. Im sure they like the money, but that is not what drives them…. i wish it did, something could be done to make less guns more of a profitable venture, then they would change their tune. They think, deep down, that “everyone is commin for em… probably “different” and probably wants their daughters or something like that… it’s how these people think.
If Jason were capable of doing basic research and learning he’d know that “the NRA is just a shill for the gun manufacturers” is laughably incorrect.
The NRA exists because of it’s individual members. Furthermore, the gun manufacturers have a lobbying group, it’s called the NSSF. But I guess when you have such an aversion to facts and reality learning such simple things is difficult, eh?
“Me, I do not want to get into the habit of living like (or thinking like) a perpetual victim.”
Which is why you are so fearful of your friends and neighbors that you want them disarmed. Sounds like you are the fearful perpetual victim.
And if Mike were a responsible gun owner he would have never hidden his guns from his mommy and daddy in their own house. So much for their rights. That glaring display of immaturity should disqualify you from owning a gun.
Because Mike isn’t interested in being a responsible gun owner. He is interested in being a victim 24/7. Even at the hands of his parents.
“Which is why you are so fearful of your friends and neighbors that you want them disarmed. Sounds like you are the fearful perpetual victim.”
And you are so fearful of your friends and neighbors that you feel you must arm yourself. How is it different? In fact, your fear is worse. You are so scared you are willing to run the risk of owning a gun, which statistically makes you more likely to be shot.
The terrified gun owner trebling and twitching away in his basement is an apt mascot for today’s dwindling GOP.
mike wont get shot. He is the big, tough, manly exception to the rule. Moreover, all bad guys should tremble in fear of his big, powerful, freedom-giving, gun collection.
got get em’ tiger!
Rule? You’re saying it’s the rule that most people who own guns get shot?
You people really do live in la la land don’t you?
Tell us all powerful and all-knowing Pandora, what makes a “responsible gun owner” and who are you to tell anyone they are “disqualified?”
Are YOU a responsible gun owner? Many would say you are not. Many would say it is people like you who are the most despicable types of gun owners, those who sit back and not only fail to defend your rights, but actively seek to deny rights to other gun owners.
Does owning an AR-15 make someone “irresponsible?” How about owning more than X number of guns, more than X number of rounds? Have you ever had an ND? Yes? OK, then you’re disqualified. Go turn in all of your guns at the nearest DSP troop.
Actually Geezer, I would support the rights of my friends and neighbors to be armed. It is folks like Pandora who live in fear, and their actions and words prove it.
I pity her.
Still refusing to acknowledge your own fright, Mike?
It’s not a “rule,” it’s just a fact that owning a gun makes you more likely to be the victim of a bullet wound.
Why are you so frightened of your “friends and neighbors” that you would own guns despite the increased risk?
You think that arming everyone would lead to fewer gun injuries and deaths, when all the data shows otherwise. You are the one to be pitied — scared of everyone AND allergic to facts. Typical bullet-head.
Cite said fact. Oh right, You can’t. The facts aren’t on your side.
nearly 100 million people in this country own guns. There are nearly 30K “deaths by gun” that includes justifiable homicide, suicide, accidents, and murders. There are only about 11K murders per year.
Please cite where someone simply owning a gun makes me “more likely to be the victim of a bullet wound” And hell, more likely than what exactly? Your statements are laughable.
Do you wear a seatbelt? Have insurance? Why? Why do you refuse to acknowledge that (using your “logic”) you’re a scared, paranoid nutcase?
Who here advocated arming everyone? I’m not advocating anyone, or any of you. Lord knows there are folks here, like Del Dem and Jason, Pandora and the like who I don’t think should own guns. I’m certainly not advocating arming them
That said, since I don’t have contempt for their rights I’m also not advocating stripping them of those rights. Hell, I think even Mr. “All republicans should be rounded up and shot” should be able to exercise his rights if he’s not a violent felon, because I believe in individual liberty, unlike so many of you.
A responsible gun owner, to me, is one that doesn’t turn their gun into a fetish by constantly talking and blogging about it. A responsible gun owner doesn’t need converts. A responsible gun owner is honest about their guns when it comes to other people’s homes. Guess what that makes you?
And I’m not afraid of responsible gun owners – I’m afraid of gun owners like you who use their gun to define themselves. It really seems like guns are all you have… and that’s sad.
Pandora, The terrified gun owner trebling and twitching away in his basement has connected so thoroughly with Wayne LaPierre’s nightmare vision of America, that the gun is the only thing that can console him.
It is an induced misomania, that can only be relived by feeling powerful. Since they are typically pretty low in work and social hierarchies, the gun gives them the feeling of being in ultimate control.
You can’t commit suicide or shoot yourself with your own gun if you don’t have said gun. An obvious fact, Mike.
There is a reason NRA members get insurance with membership.
Since they are typically pretty low in work and social hierarchies, the gun gives them the feeling of being in ultimate control.
Can’t argue with that.
The NJ doesn’t publish a full classified section each day but on the days that they do there are any where from one to a dozen legal notices of people who have applied for concealed weapon carry permits. There is only one ad legally required for the permit. Since the first of the year, it is my estimate that more than 100 permits have been sought. Of course I have no idea if any have been denied but there have been a lot of weapons (guns?) added to the streets. It seems that there are quite a few Delawarians who are in lock-step with LaPierre. I tried a search on the NJ but the info is not in the archives.
Wish I had written this:
“People who believe (La Pierre’s Hellscape America) is an accurate picture of American society …must find it utterly mind-boggling that many of us leave the house every day completely unarmed, and actually believe we’ll return home at the end of the day alive and unscathed. And in fact, most of us do, day after day. How is this even possible?”
Yes. Ted Nugent actually believes that “danger is so ever-present that going from the hotel to the car to the halls of Congress without guns or knives puts him at mortal risk.”
It is a dark vision of America, and one that grows darker by the minute. Every time someone says, “maybe we should about gun control” a bell rings and a gun nut gets his leathery wings.
What is it, about owning or shooting a gun, that would make you proud?
Cassandra – That post just shows that you and the author you quote don’t understand the gun culture at all and only see the bizarre caricature that anti-gun leftists have in their head rather than reality.
“Since they are typically pretty low in work and social hierarchies, the gun gives them the feeling of being in ultimate control.
Can’t argue with that.”
Aww, Cass is so quick with the condescension and petulance. But hey, she can’t use history, facts, logic or the Constitution to her advantage, and so this is the pitiful anti-gun fall back.
Ah, so in Pandora’s mind any gun owner who uses to 1st Amendment to protect the 2nd Amendment by way of a blog is an “irresponsible gun owner.”
In that case, as someone who doesn’t loathe individual liberty and the bill of rights like she does, I am quite happy to be labeled an “irresponsible gun owner” by someone like herself. In fact, I consider it a compliment.
“Please cite where someone simply owning a gun makes me “more likely to be the victim of a bullet wound” And hell, more likely than what exactly?”
More likely than those who don’t own guns. The data that gun owners are more likely to be gunshot victims has been available for decades, but I guess you don’t know how to look for it. Must hurt to be so dumb.
Here’s a link to an article debunking 10 gun myths; within it are links to sources for all the information:

“Your statements are laughable.”
And your inability to conduct basic web searches or understand the need to critique your own assumptions are pitiable. Or would be, if you weren’t so dangerous. After all, I have to live with the possibility that someone who doesn’t know how to use Google is running around with guns.
“Only” 11,000 murders a year, eh? Small price to pay in your mind, I gather.
More people are murdered by guns in the US than by all other means combined. That’s a fact.
Now let’s get to the real question: Why are you such a fearful, powerless man that you feel you need a gun?
If you folks are really for Gun Safety and want bills to pass then get your neighborhood Black Panther party to start stocking guns
they have too much class
Forrest, The Black Panther Party isn’t an event.
And how many die from smoking Geezer? Heart Disease, Car accidents? Spare me the BS “I want gun control because I care about saving lives” crap.
First off, it doesn’t save lives. Never has. Second, if you were worried about saving lives you’d be trying to criminalize people who whose cars get stolen, or whose cigs get stolen, or hell, even banning cars, cigarettes, and booze. You know, since in the liberal mind bans and all manner of infringements “save lives” even though they don’t.
Hell, over 10,000 people died in alcohol related car crashes in 2010. Clearly that means we need tighter regulations on cars, right? There are nearly 80,000 alcohol related deaths each year. Should that fact be used by people like those here at DL to demonize anyone who has beer at home? To call for “common sense alcohol regulation?” or to make you into a criminal if someone breaks into your house and steals your rum?
Hey, Mike, I think I’ve got your logic figured out. First we find a cure for heart disease. Then we find a cure for cancer. Then we figure out how to make alcoholic beverages that don’t make people drunk. Then we find a way to make automobiles perfectly safe.
Finally, when the only way left to die is by gunshot, well, then maybe it’s time to talk about gun control.
mike-
Please define an “alcohol related” crash. For instance–If a sober driver runs a red light and hits a driver who has broken no laws, but is over the legal BAC, is the collision “alcohol related”?
As a liberal who smokes cigarettes, drinks alcohol, drives a car, and owns a firearm, I find your “arguments” lame.
Further, you’ve directed your arguments at Geezer, who has repeatedly stated on at least 2 web sites and public airwaves that he is NOT a gun control proponent for the very reason that GUN CONTROL doesn’t work.
1. Educate yourself.
2. GFY.
3. Have a great day.
