BREAKING: Bomb Attacks at Boston Marathon

BOSTON (AP) — Two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon have resulted in injuries.

Bloody spectators were being carried Monday to the medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners. Police wove through competitors as they ran back toward the course.

“There are a lot of people down,” said one man, whose bib No. 17528 identified him as Frank Deruyter of North Carolina. He was not injured, but marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg. A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding.

About three hours after the winners crossed the line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another explosion could be heard a few seconds later.

Shoot! I wanted to thank PainesMe for the heads up on this. So… thank you for the quick tip, PainesMe!

  2. PainesMe says:

Glad I could help spread the word.

  3. pandora says:

I’ve just turned on the TV. Simply horrific.

  4. V says:

Talking to a relative who lives in the boston area. Local media is pretty much exclusively talking bombs and the possiblity of a 3rd device.

edit: well looks like there were 3 explosions.

  5. pandora says:

I just texted my brother and sister-in-law who live in Boston. Her parents are visiting from Italy, and they were planning on going to the marathon. Not sure why they changed their plans, but sure glad they did.

  6. cassandra_m says:

The Atlantic is also gathering information as they get it. Warning that some of the pictures are horrible. They are reporting that the 3rd devise was found and there was a controlled explosion.

  7. V says:

A coworker was running, but he apparently finished the race before the explosion and is ok.

  8. cassandra_m says:

NPR saying that 22 are injured and 2 are dead.

  9. pandora says:

Boston Police news conference: Third explosion at JFK Library. As of now, police are treating all three explosions as linked.

  10. V says:

you guys if you go to the atlantic pictures, just dont click on #8. just don’t. the guy in the wheelchair with the guy in the cowboy hat is being cropped because it is horrific. no legs horrific. Just wanted to give everyone fair warning.

  11. Delaware Dem says:

The JFK Library incident is still confusing. Chris Matthews just indicated on MSNBC that it appears that that event is not related. But so help me God if this is domestic right wing terrorism.

  12. Delaware Dem says:

V, there was also a picture showing a person cut in half.

  13. cassandra m says:

If you know someone running (or supporting) Google has posted up their People Finder meant to give people looking for each other a place to share info.

And NPR now saying that the Boston Globe is reporting more than 100 people injured. NPR reporter also indicating that the police are looking at this as possible domestic terrorism.

  14. Delaware Dem says:

The President will address the nation at 6 pm

  15. Jason330 says:

    Good lord.

  16. Delaware Dem says:

Reports are that there is a person of interest or a suspect (two different reports) in custody.

  17. V says:

i’m worried this is somehow tangentally related to some jerk’s idea of celebrating Patriot’s Day.

  18. Jason330 says:

CNN reporting that this could be foreign or domestic. I guess Mars has been ruled out.

  19. Delaware Dem says:

@JonahNRO: NBC confirms NY Post report that potential suspect under guard at hospital. Just heard on NPR.

  20. V says:

CNN just announced an 8 year old child is one of the dead.

  21. jason330 says:

Why are wignuts exercised over the fact that President Obama didn’t use the word “terrorism” this afternoon? Can’t they five the bullshit a rest for ten minutes?

  22. Roland D. Lebay says:

Can’t they five the bullshit a rest for ten minutes?

I had to read that sentence 3 times before I realized “five” was a typo.

  23. jason330 says:

    Sorry. Commenting from my phone.

  24. Roland D. Lebay says:

No prob. Jason. I was making fun of my own stupidity.

  25. jason330 says:

Times like this, it sure would be nice to have an ATF Director. I wonder why we don’t?

    h/t Attaturk

  26. Aoine says:

They (the ATF) would not be handling it anyway as a lead agency.

FBI investigators and FBI forensic bomb techs have it……ATF would only be an assist to them

And Command will be united under Boston PD/FD – they are the authority(s) having jurisdiction

Evidence collection will be painstaking and through. This is gonna take a little while…..

  27. Andre says:

I cant believe this happen in boston i put up a blog with emergency numbers to the hospital in boston also it contains links to the red cross for donation

  28. SMH says:

Do you really want an ATF director, given their operational stumbles, or do you just want to use this news event as a political soapbox for petty executive branch grumbles?

  29. puck says:

    What operational stumbles?

  30. Dave says:

If we need (in general, not in this case) an ATF, then we need someone to lead it. Therefore, we need a director for the ATF.

That a lobbying organization has that much control over whether a government agency has a director demonstrates the power of influence over our nations affairs and the lack of courage on the part of those who they influence.

That an agency “stumbles” does not negate the “need.”

  31. geezer says:

Interesting how defensive right-wingers are over the merest mention of the idea that this might be domestic terrorism. Guilty consciences, fellas?

  32. puck says:

It is Wingnut Week (Tax day, anniversary of Oklahoma City and Waco). On the other hand, the choice of target is not consistent with right-wing violence.

  33. Dave says:

Patriot day, Tax Day, Boston all rolled into one. I’m not gonna leap to conclusions but if I was the Director of the FBI, I know where I would focus a good chunk of my resources and it wouldn’t be on the communists.

The bombs were not really designed to cause mass destruction (of lives and property). So it seems to me that they were intended to send a message. Now if “they” had chosen the anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution…

Sometimes, things are what they seem.

  34. geezer says:

    “What operational stumbles?”

C’mon, Puck, keep up on your wingnut memes. Fast and furious, amiright?
