Boston On Lockdown

Filed in National by on April 19, 2013

Authorities are asking the entire city of Boston to “shelter in place” and not leave their homes for the time being.  There are reports that one suspect is dead, the other on the loose.

TPM has a recap of the night’s events.

If you’re just waking up, it’s a been a surreal night of chaos and violence north of Boston which, according to latest reports, has ended with one of the two Boston marathon suspects dead and another (apparently the so-called suspect number two with the white cap) still at large.

[…]

Listening to police scanners from midnight until roughly 1 AM was a surreal experience and certainly a terrifying for those involved as law enforcement officers struggled to make sense of a chaotic situation, engaged in shootouts and were targeted with explosives by fleeing suspects. Soon scores of police from different departments and federal agencies were converging on Watertown. Dynamite, hand grenades, pipe bombs were the phrases tossed out live over police scanners as the events unfolded, though all that seems certain is that there were explosives of some sort. Police held a press conference a short time ago, the details of which are here.

Use the thread below for updates.

I’ve never seen Boston, one of my favorite cities, like this:

The guy on the run is named Dzhokhar, pronounced “Joker.” Seriously?

Also: when trying to lie low, do not rob a 7-11.

  2. puck says:

More trivia: The other brother is named Tamerlan, which is presumably derived from the 15th century Islamic warrior-king Timur (Tamerlane, Tambourlaine), who sought to restore the empire of Genghis Khan.

  3. pandora says:

My brother and his family live on Norfolk Street in Cambridge. They are fine, but my 9 year old niece woke up to chaos. She says “It was really loud outside.” Poor baby.

  4. ManRamSox says:

This is totally Obama’s fault…this happened on his watch. Just like 9/11 happened on Bush’s watch and all the liberals blamed him for it.

  5. geezer says:

Really? You mean Obama ignored warnings from intelligence agencies warning of a bombing at a big public event? No? So it’s not the same at all. Got it.

Like most conservatives, you shouldn’t try to think. You’re no good at it.

Update on guy in the picture we all clicked on and regretted:

He’s recovering, lost both legs at the knee,AND was one of the first witnesses to identify the bombers.

Heros all around in that shot.

  7. Dave says:

“Like most conservatives, you shouldn’t try to think. You’re no good at it.”

I recognize the need for the 3 Rs in our schools. After all, everyone needs to know how to balance a check book and read things, but why aren’t they teaching critical thinking in schools? How could that guy get all the way through school without be able to think his way through a simple contrast and compare exercise? It really is deplorable! The ignorance and stupidity of the far right is astounding. I wish someone would do a study. I really would like to know how they got that way and why they stay that way.

If they kept their mouths shut, at least no one would know, but they seem to revel in removing all doubt and do not even seem to be embarassed about it!

  8. AQC says:

It looks like they may have found him and are trying to negotiate a surrender.

  9. puck says:

Maybe. Something big is happening in Watertown but they aren’t letting TV crews anywhere near it. One cop told the news crew “If you knew what was happening, you wouldn’t be standing there.” An LE “expert” in the studio suggested it fit the profile of a surrender negotiation, but nobody can tell for sure.

  10. Melbourne Born says:

This crime is exactly why we need the option of the death penalty.

  11. puck says:

Right. The death penalty will definitely deter people who are willing to strap bombs to themselves.

  12. duty says:

@Dave/Geezer – Can’t you spot sarcasm with your superior intellect?

  13. Geezer says:

How do you know it’s sarcasm? Because of your inferior intellect?

  14. pandora says:

Sarcasm is usually clever and witty. So that might explain the confusion.

  15. Dana Garrett says:

For a long time I thought that pathological people gravitated toward extremist groups and positions and not that extremist groups or positions caused (nonpathological) people to become pathological. I am beginning to question my position. What are the odds that two brothers could be such monstrous sociopaths?

  16. Dave says:

“Sarcasm is usually clever and witty. So that might explain the confusion.”

    LOL, yeah.

And I never claimed to have superior intellect, although I’ve noticed in my own independent observation that my intellect increases exponentially in proportion to the number of margaritas I’ve consumed.

  17. Geezer says:

Dana: I’m wondering if one brother got into this and brought the other one along with him. Seems more likely than both of them falling off the beam together.

  18. Rusty Dils says:

Uncle of suspects gives excellent, open, honest interview. Says he personally loves America, calls his nephews losers, and says they have shamed his family name. Obviously these kids did not learn any of their bad influences from their uncle, sounds like a great guy.
He recommends to the nephew that might still be alive to turn himself in.

Says he did not want his family to have anything to do with these guys, and has not seen them in many years

    Dana

What are the odds that two brothers could be such monstrous sociopaths?

In Chechen culture those odds are pretty low.

  20. Dana Garrett says:

But, Steve, according to the reports I’ve heard, neither of these young men were born or raised there. And they came to the US at a young age. I suppose, though, that the cultural influence could have come from their extended family. I have been struck how their father and one uncle haven’t had contact with them for years. I am now wondering if they were effectively abandoned and alienated. That might make callow individuals identify with extreme groups. The same phenomenon occurs with gang membership.

  21. Delaware Libertarian says:

    A few things…

    1) I’m calling Delaware Dem out for asserting that this was some right wing terrorist group who did this without a shred of evidence while others took a more responsible approach.

    2) Why are you shutting down a metropolis for searching one guy? Are we now going to impose martial law anytime we have a manhunt? This only emboldens the next terrorist, because now you can cost a city billions of dollars by shutting it down and possibly cause food/gas shortages? (most cities only have a three day supply worth of food- (http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/big-data-download/bombing-aftermath-could-cost-boston-billions-182502275.html). Not to mention all of those who work in retail and other shift workers have lost much needed wages.

    3) What this guy said (in the last two paragraphs): http://www.thenation.com/blog/173952/our-politics-fear

and what this woman said: http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-homeland-is-battlefield-also-too.html

  22. Delaware Libertarian says:

My comment above says, “awaiting moderation”. Has this site become delawarepolitics.net with the censoring?

  23. Delaware Libertarian says:

In 1997, you didn’t see the Los Angeles mayor close down the city with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Hollywood_shootout

  24. cassandra_m says:

Has this site become delawarepolitics.net with the censoring?

No. But we can tell you’re a regular over there with this kind of assholeishness. Anyone who puts three links or more into one comment is automatically moderated so that someone can make sure it isn’t spam. Most commented blogs work this way.

  25. puck says:

DelawareLibertarian @11:54 (now I’m doubting real ID) – comments are automatically moderated when they have the signature of spam. Your comment probably generated a false positive. For WordPress, this signature is when the comment has more than two links, plus there are some other complexity factors I haven’t figured out yet that can also cause moderation. Sometimes comments get flagged even with one or zero links, which is a mystery to me but it happens. DL admins have chosen to leave the setting at 2 links, which stops most spam, so it’s not personal. Your site probably has something like this too.

Scanning the moderation bucket for false positives is a manual task, and it is a bit of an imposition to expect the admins to do this constantly. But a nice non-accusatory request will probably work.

  26. Delaware Libertarian says:

OK thanks, Cassandra and puck. Got it now and now I know. And for the record, I don’t read delawarepolitics.net, but I know about their censorship from you all.

  27. cassandra m says:

Thanks for helping with the explanation, puck. One other thin, DLoretta editors are a busy lot so it can sometimes be a few hours for us to get to see that a comment needs to be released.
