Looming south of Newark is Iron Hill, which is an outcropping of the Piedmont Plateau. The hill, named for the iron deposits mined on it, is 331 feet above sea level.

When I used to come back to Delaware for visits while living in the mountains out west, the whole state of Delaware looked flat as a pancake to me . I could see no difference between northern and southern Delaware . Now, after living in Sussex County for half my life, The hills of Newcastle look like mountains to me.
My favorite view of Iron Hill is from driving Southbound on 95 (actually heading west) as you approach Newark. The peak of Iron Hill is on the left of 95 as you pass the 896 interchange.
The name goes a bit further back to pre-history. The stone-age natives living here had a flourishing tool industry:
“The Native Americans were well aware of the unique properties of stones found on Iron Hill, and they had two names for the area. One was Merretico – hill of hard stone, and the other, Suquasehum, said to be a Lenape Indian word meaning iron. “.
