Pro Rassler Provides Sophisticated Analysis of Delaware Marriage Equality

Filed in Delaware, National by on May 9, 2013

From the Bible of Pro Wrestling, Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Weekly, comes the following:

–Jay Briscoe got himself into trouble, deleting his entire Twitter account over what he tweeted Wednesday:
“The Delaware Senate passed a bill yesterday that allows same sex couples to get married.  If that makes you happy, then congratulations!!!”

“..try and teach my kids that there’s nothing wrong with that and I’ll fucking shoot you.

About 12 hours later, after realizing that was probably not the right thing to say, he wrote:
“I feel very strongly about who should teach kids about certain things but I showed poor judgment by using that analogy and I’m sorry.”

A few hours after that, he deleted his entire account. ROH released this statement:  “Ring of Honor Wrestling respects and appreciates every fan regardless of age, gender, race, religion or sexual preference.  The recent post by Jay Briscoe does not represent the views or opinions of Ring of Honor Wrestling, its owners, management or employees.” ROH has said Briscoe will both make a public apology for his remarks on Saturday’s house show in Belle Vernon, PA, and he has agreed to donate his pay for the next two weekend to the Partners Against Hate charitable organization.

Ring Of Honor is one of the better, and better-known, upper-level independent operations, and they’ve sent several wrestlers to WWE, including CM Punk and Bryan Danielson, aka Daniel Bryan, who is one of the best workers in the world, although the WWE style limits him. Briscoe has been part of one of the best tag teams in the country, and is currently involved in a brother vs. brother/partner vs. partner feud:

And you thought that this El Somnambulo thing was just an empty gimmick…but he covers it all. Including the ‘marriage’ between pro rasslin’ and marriage equality

  1. Flora Kitty says:

Funny since I find wrestling to be rather homoerotic.

  2. Flora Kitty: I think it even used to be more so, especially during the ‘roid era that featured Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior among its stars. Not to mention the thinly-veiled appeal of Brutus Beefcake.

In fact, Vince McMahon started a World Bodybuilding Federation at the time, which had about as much success as the XFL. McMahon barely escaped going to prison on charges of distributing steroids.

Used to be that wrestlers didn’t have these chiseled physiques, and some of the best workers today, like CM Punk and Daniel Bryan, don’t.

While there can be no doubt that there is at least implicit marketing to the gay audience, few wrestlers have ever come out. Pat Patterson is one, and the anguished Chris Kanyon was another. Kanyon committed suicide in 2010.

The Briscoe Brothers are from Laurel. ‘Nuff said. They’re the offspring of a particularly sanctimonious jackass, so at least they come by it honestly.

  4. Guess that explains why he was tweeting about it. I suppose it’s safe to say that their real name is not Briscoe? I assume they took that name from the famed Brisco Brothers, Jack and Jerry.

Uh, asked and answered. According to Wikipedia (and they’re never wrong):

“The Pugh brothers (aka the Briscoes), Jamin (Jay) (born January 25, 1984) and Mark (born January 17, 1985) grew up in Laurel, Delaware. As high schoolers, both received honorable mention All-State honors their junior and senior years for football, Jay as a fullback and a linebacker and Mark as a tight end and a linebacker. At one point, both were signed to play for Wesley College (Delaware), a fact even used in wrestling storyline at one point, at ROH Beating the Odds, to explain an absence from which they were returning.”

Jay Briscoe ain’t got nothing on Brisco County Jr.
