Delaware ranked 5th best state for women
The Center for American Progress (CAP) report, “The State of Women in America,” uses 36 different health, economic, and leadership factors to measure disparities between states and rank the best and worst states for women.” Delaware women don’t have it so bad (relatively speaking). We are fifth overall and our gals make $0.81 for every dollar men make for the same job. The national average is $0.77 – so not too shabby ladies. Maryland is number 1 by that measure. They pay their daughters $0.85 for every dollar their sons make doing the same job.
The worst states in which to be a non-man are predictably, more often than not, in the south. Louisiana’s Mesdames et Mesdemoiselles take down a measly $0.67 compared to their Messieurs. […]

“our gals”? Remind me to kick you in the sack the next time I see you for that one. Personally, I see no reason to celebrate what is still a 19% gap in wages between men and women. 19% is, in fact, not only “shabby,” it’s outrageous and shitty and discouraging. Women are getting paid 19% less than men for the same job in Delaware, a reportedly blue state. So remind me to kick you in the sack twice for this post.
Oh my. I was trying to elicit a slap, not a kick.
Speaking of railroad tunnels with sledgehammers.
Duck!
Also – Correction. Louisiana is worst overall. Wyoming is worst in income disparity. $0.64 to the dollar.
A woman making 19% less than a man for the same job gives Delaware the 5th best ranking in the nation.
Just keep thinking about that. It is f***ing despicable.
All due respect. Maybe the reason is that the gals tend to get a little emotional? I’m not excusing it, just seeking some kind for explanation. Also, I said “all due respect.”
Actually the gap is not for the “same job.” The table is titled “What a woman makes for every dollar a white man makes.” All the studies had demonstrated that the wage gap between women and men is attributable to many factors. The portion of the wage gap that remains unexplained after accounting for all other factors ranges between 5% to 12%, depending on the occupation and the study itself. The unexplained portion is variously shown to be a result of biases in perceptions of equivalent male and female competence, and perceived incongruity between the female gender role and leadership roles, and other reasons.
Just wanted to clarify that the 19% gap is not a measure of same job disparity.
Do I have to call your wife?
Years ago I worked for a small employer in PA. The owner was Main Line, old money, Scottish – ’nuff said about stereotypes!
I went to him about 2 months past the time I was promised s significant raise and asked when I would see it. Had all my accomplishments listed, revenue generated, etc.
He actually looked me in the eye and said “Why do you need more money, your husband has a good paying job.” I calmly informed him that my husband didn’t do any work for him, I did and that my husband had nothing to do with my employment, performance or our agreement. I got my raise in the next paycheck!
Ranked 5th BEST state for women? Perhaps a little gender telling myopic in that headline. How can you be 5th Best—when none even meet threshold of equality? How about 5th closest?
You want to come tell my daughters, and your co-workers–hey, suck it up–I know you’re doing the same job, at the same level of production, and expectation–and probably at sometime all that and pregnant too–but that 19% less than what Walt and Hank are bringing home yearly is just a little taken off the top, compared to those other states. Yeh, you know—we’re one of the best (sic) in a world of offenders.
Maybe, if more women headed the Fantasy Football League office pool………SShhhhsshhh
Has anyone looked into the methodology of this “report”?
My wife is a childless medical professional. She will a) outlive me and b) earn at least 5 times more than I will earn in my lifetime. She also has no children and will work for at least 30 consecutive years.
Many women interrupt or abandon their careers in order to have children. This can skew the “pay gap” numbers. That fact alone makes it necessary to know the methodology of the cited study.
Oh Jaaaason……..the phrase “with all due respect” generally means there was none meant…..
Not to pander, but the line about woman interrupting or abondoning careers for kids is played out and fucking sexist. It’s an excuse men tell themselves. You never hear a woman saying something that stupid.
@LeBay… your personal situation is absolutely irrelevant, by the way. Anedotes are nice but they don’t tell me anything other than a nice story.
I agree with the women. The fact that earning 20% less than men is some sort of a victory is sad and disgusting. The fact that people continue to make excuses for it is just as bad.
19%–we’ll just call that the Delaware Gender Tax out of our paycheck, that’s hidden, and we’ll never see again.
Hey, maybe we can get a deduction for that?
And DG–you are SO RIGHT about “mommy tracking”. And now that I’m of the age group where they are re-integrating–my peers are VERY PLEASED at what they did, and how they have been able to re-integrate rather readily, and are grateful not the least bit resentful of lost time. They are back on their game, track, salary line etc..(years of service less of course). Most after a 6 month catch-up/re-entry/orientation. Nobody’s in the mailroom. I think the biggest hoot is the client is billed the same hourly!!!! They have no idea they’re getting the 9 year professional coming back, or the 23 year professional uninterrupted providing services. It’s just the next case on the pile.
I have a better headline: Delaware 46th on The Most Awful States for Women
I agree with your headline. Since we can’t get outside of our male privilege, I was probably too subtle with my smarmy, “… our gals make… ” and “…not too shabby ladies.” It is language that is still all too common, so it didn’t come off like the kind of satire it was meant to be.
It’s OK cowboy.
Personally, my back doesn’t go up on those things.
My biggest pet peeve–and I swear I’ll walk away–is when making that larger purchase and the salesPERSON says–“you sure–do you need to call your husband or anyone?” I’m sure in their mind, they probably think they are being polite and giving me a “perceived” moment to not seem pushy on the sale—BUT—if the contract doesn’t need his signature (oh I went thru those years–great story)–why the hey are you holding me up? My cash, my cards, our joint accessed funds, and you wanna throw in a Lifeline?
Where’s the Lifeline when the Big Guy is in the market and brings me home Miracle Whip instead of Cool Whip? And no cell phone. Now that’s trouble at home.
Not to pander, but the line about woman interrupting or abandoning careers for kids is played out and fucking sexist. It’s an excuse men tell themselves. You never hear a woman saying something that stupid.
I noticed you didn’t say it was untrue, and you didn’t answer my question re: study or report methodology. Get back to me when you have facts to back up your venom.
As for women who say stupid shit, I guess you’ve never listened to Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachman? Those two spew stupidity every time they open their mouths.
Miracle Whip or Cool Whip both disgusting
@Tom McKenney-
Couldn’t agree more.
Miracle Whip is gross. Hellmann’s mayo on my imported ham & cooper sharp cheese sandwich on fresh rye bread w/ home grown tomato, onion & lettuce, please!
Cool whip? Really? Who eats that crap? It takes about 3 minutes to make real whipped cream. It takes 1 minute or less to buy some prepacked aerosol whipped cream. Either is far tastier (and better for you) than Cool Whip.
@Joanne Christian-

This is what I was getting at re: study/report methodology. We need to know exactly what the “report” or “study” was examining in order to determine if the study/report can tell us anything meaningful.
A percentage of the “pay gap” boils down to basic arithmetic. If worker A works a given job for 30 consecutive years, and worker B works the exact same job at the same pay rate for 20 years, worker A will have a higher career earnings total than worker B. The sex of the workers is irrelevant.
I’m not saying sexism is dead in corporate America. I’ve witnessed it firsthand & it disgusts me. I worked for a global corporation for 15+ years & I saw extremely qualified women get passed over for promotions more than a few times. I also heard their male superiors say that they (the women in question) would have “the big position” in the company if they had “balls.” These men were speaking literally, as the women in question were both competent and “ballsy.”
I hear ya–they can do anything they want w/ the numbers.
And FTR–I think Miracle Whip and Cool Whip are gross too (although I do have one recipe that kinda relies on the Cool Whip, and it is good), but sometimes you get these “assignments” for some such family/friend/work function–and you better bring the right thing. But let me put that in guy terms since it’s this thread:
LeBay–Bring the beer. And not that donkey piss Genessee at your place–it better be Corona–we’re doing chili this year.
Got it?
