Take a Look at How Far the GOP Has Fallen

Filed in National by on November 3, 2013

This is a 2.5 minute video clip of part of a debate between GHW Bush and Ronald Reagan:

Incredible, right? Conservatism that recognized the humanity of undocumented immigrants, recognized the ongoing labor needs here and recognized that the power of the United States should be in finding ways to work with Mexico rather than just building a wall. Now conservatives are yowling for a wall (not that the wall works, but because the DOD contractors who want to build it need the revenue stream), and running away from any accommodation on fixing the undocumented immigrant problem. Even the Chamber of Commerce is now backing away from any comprehensive reform — pretty much backing the House solution (enforcement only) and letting the legalization issue slide. Marco Rubio is flip-flopping on his own bill (one that already passed the Senate!) — now also backing some piecemeal reform that only prioritizes what the House wants.

Interesting, yes? That the much vaunted reform to Immigration Law that seemed to urgent to the GOP earlier this year is now caught up in the House’s need to pander to the most bigoted and destructive voices in their own party. The Teajhadi nativists are driving not only immigration policy within the GOP, but it sure looks like they get to undermine the so-called outreach to the Hispanic community. It also means that neither Bush Sr or Reagan could never win a GOP primary now.
