Open Letter to John Carney

Filed in National by on November 8, 2013

Representative Carney,

Your Democratic colleagues in the House are supporting an effort to expand Social Security benefits. I think it is time for you to break with the right-wing policies you’ve supported in the past and join your fellow Democrats in helping restore sanity to the debate over this vital social insurance program that has done so much to allow our nation’s elderly to live in dignity.

At a time when the 401k system has been proven to be a failed experiment, based on legalized theft, it is not time to cut social security benefits. Rather, it is a time to ensure Social Security’s long-term solvency by “scraping the cap” and stop excluding income over $113,700 from the social security tax.

The current proposal, supported by your Democratic colleagues, would phase out that cap, so that millionaires like you, Chris Coons and Tom Carper would pay into Social Security throughout the year like the rest of us.

Now, I know you and your staff hate me. So imagine that this letter is coming from someone you don’t hate. (Frankly, I think it is time for Shelia Grant to put that pettiness aside, but that is a topic for another letter.)

Anyway, think about it. The Overton Window on Social Security is ready to move back to the middle, and it is well past time for you to establish some Democratic credibility as the sole representative in the House of a very Demcoratic state.

Thanks,

Jason330

The House Bill that we’d like Carney to co-sponsor is H.R. 3118: Strengthening Social Security Act of 2013, which currently has 38 co-sponsors.

The bill we’d like Coons and Carper to so-sponsor (the one that Brown just joined) is S. 567, Strengthening Social Security Act of 2013, which has 3 co-sponsors so far.

If you think Sheila Grant is petty, I really have to question your judgement.

  3. Jason330 says:

Perhaps petty wasn’t the right word. Aloofness? Lack of approachability?

  4. Nuttingham says:

There is no way the statement “millionaires like you” is a true statement in this case.

  5. Jason330 says:

Average net worth in the house was $6.4 million in 2011. That year Carney’s net worth was estimated at between $170,030 and $800,000 – so he may still be out of the millionaires club.

Jason..I still find lack of approachability still wrong. My wife has met with her on nutrition issues and has found her both welcoming and very knowledgeable and up to date on issues and legislation. That certainly has been the case with all of our official’s staff.

No doubt a lovely human being. Sticking up for the 1% takes a toll though.

Carney holding a “tele town hall” next week:

When I’m down in Washington voting, a great way for me to keep in touch with you is by holding tele-town halls.

On Tuesday evening, November 12, at 7:45 PM, I’ll be holding a tele-town hall to take questions from Delawareans about my work in Washington.

I want to know what your priorities are, and I want to hear your ideas about how to make Washington work better.

If you’re interested in participating, please click here or call my Wilmington office at 302-691-7333 or toll-free at 877-899-7872 by noon on Tuesday, November 12 to sign up. If you sign up, you’ll receive a phone call around 7:40pm Tuesday evening that will enable you to ask questions during the call and listen to my answers. The call will last an hour.

I hope you’ll be able to join me.

  9. Jason330 says:

I just called the 877 number to sign up. It is slated for an hour, so maybe 5 or 6 people will get to ask something. My expectations for this event are very low.

  10. Tom McKenney says:

Jason, my point is that she is sticking up for the poorest among us. Sounds like it is personal with you.

  11. Jason330 says:

    Probably.

  12. Cobain says:

Jason you can be an idiot at times. But a lovable one nontheless. You lost me at John Carney is a millionaire.

  13. Hmm says:

    Jason,
You make good points at times, but your combative approach and pettiness just render you a nuisance. For example John should get on board with this, but you expose your lack of intellectual reason by stating something you surely know to be untrue. John Carney could be called a lot of things, but a man out of touch financially is the last thing one would accuse him of. Also, think about yourself personally before you attach a person’s lack of willingness to go out of their way for you. Shiela is hardly known to be petty or anything but professional.

  14. jason330 says:

I’m combative as a result of John Carney’s adversarial stance toward traditional democratic values. You may not have noticed, but I’m not one of those Democrats who takes that lightly.
