The GOP Circular Firing Squad, Part 7,045

Now it’s Steve LaTourette — GOP Congresman from Ohio — who is taking his turn at the guns. He’s part of the Mainstreet Advocacy group, which is a Republican PAC looking to push back on the Teajhadis and to get more moderate GOP candidates elected. Their announcement card specifically pushes back on Club for Growth, FreedomWorks and the Tea Party:

This group is $8 million to spend to promote moderate candidates and to trash the Club for Growth and tejhadi types for the 2014 cycle. Not sure if this is just an online ad or if they plan on any broadcast of this thing. More:

“The reason that Harry Reid and the Democrats control the U.S. Senate is thanks to the efforts of the Club for Growth, Freedom Works and the Tea Party,” LaTourette said in a Wednesday press release. “The far right’s attempts to purge the GOP of people they find to be ‘imperfect’ needs to stop.” […]

The group plans to back moderate GOP candidates for office, like West Virginia Senate hopeful Shelly Moore Capito, who might face opposition from less mainstream opponents, as well as the Republican who now holds LaTourette’s congressional seat: Dave Joyce of Russell Township. LaTourette has also expressed interest in aiding a moderate candidate to challenge incumbent Tea Party Republican Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan.

“For years now, groups like the Club for Growth and their allies have waged a vicious intra-party civil war that has cost the Republican party control of the U.S. Senate,” LaTourette continued. “For the first time, there will be a group representing the governing wing of the Republican Party that will not only defend itself but fight back.”

It wouldn’t surprise me if this Mainstreet Advocacy group is a wholly owned subsidiary of one of Karl Rove’s groups, but hey. A sitting Congressman looking to knock off other sitting Congressmen from his own party is going to be fun to watch.
