What Am I Doing Today? Getting Ready For The Walking Dead Season Finale

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on March 29, 2015

When The Walking Dead first aired I didn’t pay much attention. Hello? Zombies aren’t really my thing. I was a Game of Thrones addict. Loved Dexter. Orange Is The New Black is sooo good. Rome is still one of the best series I’ve seen. Everyone on House of Cards is scarier than TWD zombies. Sherlock is one of the most perfect, amazing, wonderful series EVER. (If you haven’t watched Sherlock I strongly suggest you do.)

I started watching The Walking Dead (TWD) with my son as a sorta mother-son bonding thing. He liked all things zombie and I’ll admit to rolling my eyes when he suggested we start the series on Netflix. Now, I can’t get enough. This series draws you in. So much so that I’m writing about tonight’s season finale.

If you’re not interested in TWD, I understand. But if you are, share your thoughts, hopes, dreams in the comments!

Note: I have not read the comics. Everything written below is just me guessing.

I’m not sure what to expect tonight, but will confess that I have envisioned everyone’s possible death – except Rick and Carl’s. They are safe. I think Glenn is safe, but I’m worried about Maggie. I’m also extremely concerned for Carol – one of the most amazing, smartest, toughest characters on TWD – because I can see Pete (wife abuser) killing her (former abused spouse). Oh, the irony.

Is Daryl (Love him!) safe tonight? Not sure. I can picture him living and dying. I would really miss him and the group would be significantly weakened by the loss of his skills.

Michonne? (Another one of my all-time favorites) The scene where she literally hung up her sword doesn’t bode well.

Sasha has been suffering from PTSD. I could see the zombie hunter being taken out by a zombie.

Tara: Could she not survive the head injury? Just die without waking up? If that happens my bet is that it happens early in the finale and sets the tone. It would not only further show the recklessness and incompetence of Alexandria, it would fuel our groups anger with the loss of one of their own. Preventable deaths are grounds for a death sentence in TWD.

Abraham: I like Abraham, but I’m not emotionally attached to him for some reason. That might be why I can envision his death. It wouldn’t be a tearjerker for me.

Eugene: I can see him getting killed off doing something heroic or cowardly. His character is evolving.

Rosita: This character hasn’t been given enough screen time. I don’t know much about her story (altho, given the last discussion on DL about TWD it’s entirely possible I missed it!). Guess I’m saying she’s expendable. Ouch! It’s a shame since last week’s scene in the woods with Michonne and Sasha was really good.

Father Gabriel: Since everyone wants him to die, he’ll probably live.

Have I missed anyone from the main group? Oh, Judith. Will they kill the baby? Could Rick ever recover from that. He’s hanging on by a thread as it is. So, I’m guessing Judith lives.

As far as the Alexandria inhabitants go… everyone except Deanna and Aaron are fair game. I think these two characters will be safe. For now… Bwhahaha! Not sure about Enid mainly because who she is and why she’s there hasn’t been addressed. I think we’ll find out her story tonight, and that will probably determine her fate.

As I write this I’m thinking I spend too much time thinking about The Walking Dead. But, in my defense, the show does make you think about situational humanity, morality and ethics and how they change given specific circumstances. In the beginning you think Rick is the good, moral guy and that Shane is the bad guy who has no heart. In the last episode Rick says exactly what Shane said – he has become Shane and adopted Shane’s philosophy and we all now agree. Shane was right. It just took Rick, and the rest of us, longer to see the truth.

No, they’re not. Indeed, I have been expecting all season for them to kill Rick. And just when Carl is no longer an asshole, and you are beginning to have some sympathy for him, I can see them killing Carl.

I think Glenn is safe, but I’m worried about Maggie. I’m also extremely concerned for Carol – one of the most amazing, smartest, toughest characters on TWD – because I can see Pete (wife abuser) killing her (former abused spouse). Oh, the irony.

I think all three are safe. In my mind, they, along with Daryll and Michonne, are the core of the show now.

Sasha has been suffering from PTSD. I could see the zombie hunter being taken out by a zombie.

I think she is a goner.

Tara: Could she not survive the head injury? Just die without waking up? If that happens my bet is that it happens early in the finale and sets the tone. It would not only further show the recklessness and incompetence of Alexandria, it would fuel our groups anger with the loss of one of their own. I had thought they said in the last episode that she was recovering well. She will probably survive.

Abraham: I like Abraham, but I’m not emotionally attached to him for some reason. That might be why I can envision his death. It wouldn’t be a tearjerker for me.

Eugene: I can see him getting killed off doing something heroic or cowardly. His character is evolving.

I think Eugene is definitely a goner now that they have redeemed him with his finally getting courage and saving Tara. I think Abraham survives.

LOL. She is so minor a character that I am having trouble picturing her in my head. So they could both kill her or forget about her entirely.

Father Gabriel: Since everyone wants him to die, he’ll probably live.

    Agree.

I think the seasons ends with them exiling Rick, and the rest of the group staying in Alexandria.

  2. pandora says:

I can see Rick being exiled. That way Rick, Daryl, Aaron (and Morgan??? Please tell me he shows up in this episode!) will be outside the walls when the W people attack Alexandria. Sorta like Carol in the Terminus episode.

And I’ll buy you a drink, DD, if they kill off Rick or Carl!

  3. Dave says:

The core (Daryl, Rick, Michonne, Glenn, and yeah even Carl) are safe. Rick may be getting a new squeeze. Judith is a vulnerability and humanizing factor they all have to deal with. Sort of baggage that represents life before. Maggie has new story arc in her association with Deanna. Carol’s story also has more to it as she tries a uniform of normality, baking cookies while terrorizing a kid so he doesn’t walk. A wolf in sheep’s skin. Abraham also has a new responsibilities, more story there. Eugene is turning over a new leaf and is almost a real part of the group. Not enough to kill him off yet, but enough so that we are starting to care about him. Gabriel is a jerk, so he probably stays around (although I would love for him to bite the dust if I had a choice). Bottom line for me, Sasha is toast or maybe Rosita. The only one absolutely safe is Daryl. Fan rioting would ensue if he bites the dust.

Even so, I don’t sit on the edge of my chair in anticipation because I am interested in the story about preserving humanity or what it means to be human in the sense that everyone not part of the tribe are others and therefore not much better than the walkers. Watching how someone becomes part of the tribe and why the tribe accepts or rejects them. Even Daryl has new buddies that he has found respect for.

And yes there are the W people. Whose in charge of them? another Governor?

  4. pandora says:

I think Daryl might fall in love with Aaron!

So Dave’s guess is that we’ll lose no one worth crying over. I can see that – Getting us all worked up over nothing. But… there always seems to be a bloodbath coming when TWD cast grows to this size, or one of them shows hope.

In GoT we learn to focus on the game. (Rob Stark was awful at the game.) In TWD there’s no rhyme or reason. Bad things happen to everyone and many of the deaths serve no purpose (sob, Tyreese, Noah) and don’t further the plot. They’re just a given in the zombie apocalypse.

  5. Jason330 says:

One of the core group has to die to give the season finale gravitas. Otherwise it is just another day landing axes in zombie heads. Daryl, is a goner.

  6. pandora says:

I’m with Jason. Hey, I could be wrong, but I think we’ll be losing someone in the core group. As far as story arcs go… Maggie hasn’t really done anything with Deanna. What the hell is Maggie’s job? Abraham doesn’t have an arc either (not really). His taking charge of construction isn’t really an arc – the point of that scene had more to do with showing how the people of Alexandria run when faced with walkers and leave their people behind. So I can see both of them going.

I’m really worried about Carol and Daryl. And Michonne!

  7. Jason330 says:

If Carol or Michone dies in done with Walking Dead (until the next episode airs)

  8. rick says:

You thought the Governor was bad…First you’ll meet “Jesus” ….then Negan!!! Depending on what the FCC permits…It’s just getting started.

  9. rick says:

Pandora has a reason to be worried about Daryl and Carol…..maybe Maggie.

  10. rick says:

If Daryl goes it’s in a walker swarm with the whisperers in it. The Whisperers are armed.

  11. pandora says:

I am abashed. What am I going to do with all these tissues?

    Good finale, tho.

  12. Dave says:

There is a lot going on and they did off a major character during the season. So am content to advance the story without any major events that alters the trajectory.

At this point I am more concerned about the GoT because after this season they will have caught up to the books and Martin doesn’t seem to be able to get his (lazy) ass in gear and write because he is too busy dicking around with other projects. I’m emotionally invested in the books. The HBO series is a nice diversion with its rich imagery that compliments the books but the books are where the story is and while I don’t stress over it, I am annoyed. Twenty years to finish the story is way too long and Martin is not getting any younger. If I were king I would put him in solitary doing nothing but writing and once he finished I would execute him just because of the Red Wedding!

  13. Jason330 says:

Why doesn’t he pull a Tom Clancey and set up a writers dungeon?

  14. Dave says:

That’s not a terrible idea, but it’s very risky. It’s a large tapestry that originates straight from his warped mind. I wonder what it would look like if he were to have other weavers in his employ. My guess is he would nit pick everything and they would quit. Still, as long as I couldn’t tell the difference I wouldn’t care.

I knew he was warped way back when Ned Stark lost his head. Anyway, the books are the cake, the show is just frosting and if anything happens to him before he finishes, there will be crying and wailing, not for him. Rather for the story he is telling.

  15. Jason330 says:

I’ll bet paid writers or even some fan fiction writers could get close enough to the real thing that it would be hard to tell the difference. (think Chris Cole fronting Steel Dragon) If Martin doesn’t view this as a business, he needs to be shown the moon door.

  16. pandora says:

LOL! Chris Cole. Yo, yo, yo, Marky Mark!

As far as GoT, book readers might want to stop watching the show until after the books are completed:

Show runners Dan Weiss and David Benioff confirmed over the weekend that their show would be ending in the same place as the book series, and sooner than the books as well.

Speaking to the Oxford Union, Benioff addressed the TV series outpacing the books:

“Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading. And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going; there might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination. I kind of wish that there were some things we didn’t have to spoil, but we’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The show must go on… and that’s what we’re going to do.”

GoT starts April 12th! Martin has also said he won’t be writing for season 6. Guess he’ll be busy completing the books.

  17. Jason330 says:

I love you for picking up that reference.
