Pence calls for legislation to invalidate Indy’s “right to discriminate” law
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) said Tuesday that he wanted to see legislation on his desk this week clarifying that the controversial religious freedom bill he signed into law did not allow businesses to deny service to anyone.
“…the intent of the law when I signed it, was to give the courts in our state the highest level of scrutiny in cases where people feel that their religious liberty is being infringed on by government action.”
This should be called Pence’s MC Escher law. Since Indiana’s “religions freedom” law in was intended to explicitly allow discrimination, this law (a government action) proposed by Pence can be seen by wingnuts as infringing on their recently won religious liberty to discriminate against gays.
* props to rude pundit for the (And not the good kind of pain in the ass) line.
So sick of haters and religious rubes condemning people based on their false religious beliefs. Take a look in the f-ing mirror rubes. That’s where the real sin lies
And mouse lays it on the line, with gusto I might add. I’m long sick of religion in general, I mostly keep it to myself until they try to insert it into the government. Should wind up in court at some point, perhaps in the dozen or so states that have laws similar to the Indiana debacle. Pence, rightly or wrongly, owns this one and there will be no wiggle room allowed.
Pence was so hellbent on signing the bill that apparently he never had his lawyers review it.
Governors have vetoed bills that they supported right here in Delaware b/c, once the bill got to the governor’s desk, legal staff discovered problems that essentially required a veto. Subsequent legislation would then be passed to address those issues.
Doesn’t matter at all what the bill’s ‘intent’ was, that’s a real live bill on your desk, and it does what the language in the body of the bill says it does.
Instead, Pence has blamed everything from Obamacare to the media to the gay libs rather than admit that he and his staff screwed up. Man up!
Arkansas just passed a similar bill today. Gov. Asa Hutchinson has previously said he’d sign it.
One difference–nobody in their right mind goes to Arkansas anyway. Even Walmart came out in tepid opposition to the bill.
In Virginia the governor has said he’ll veto the one under consideration now.
Personally I think the Republicans are stupid for stepping in it again, but let’s say, arguendo, that you absolutely fear you will go to hell for participating in an act that your religion forbids . Does the government have the right to force you to do that act?
What constitutes participation? Does baking a cake for a gay wedding translate into participation in that wedding?
@FBH: I don’t give a shit what your religion says, nor should government.
Think about it. The florist and baker who told customers they wouldn’t work for the would-be clients because of their “religious beliefs” could easily have said they couldn’t do the job because of a scheduling conflict. Instead, the business owners insisted on making it about the clients’ sexual orientation.
So who are the assholes here?
@El Som: If it weren’t the vanity project of a Walton, the museum of American art in Bentonville would be worth a visit.
