Beau Biden Hospitalized in Walter Reed Medical Center

Filed in Delaware by on May 19, 2015

From the News Journal:

Beau Biden, the son of Vice President Joe Biden and a Democratic candidate for governor of Delaware in 2016, has been hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for an undisclosed illness.

The vice president’s office confirmed Tuesday that Beau Biden was undergoing treatment, but did not go into further details.

Alright. First things first. I really don’t think there is any Delawarean out there, save the truly evil conservatives among us who are already destined for Hell, who doesn’t wish Beau Biden the best of health, and have been wishing him a recovery from whatever it is he has been dealing with lo these many years now. I truly hope whatever Mr. Biden is getting treatment for is not serious and he is getting well.

And yes, in a perfect world, normally, we all are entitled to privacy in our private lives and concerning our medical treatments.

But, “undisclosed illness” and “did not go into further details?”

That has to stop. Now.

It is no longer permissible. Not from the presumptive 2016 Democratic candidate for Governor.

When I read that article in the News Journal my heart sunk. I think Beau Biden has brain cancer. If his condition wasn’t so serious he would be more forthcoming.
I hope that whatever treatment he’s currently receiving is successful and that he’s able live good life for a long time.
I said in a previous comment that I saw him in Lucky’s Restaurant several weeks ago and he didn’t look good. He was unshaven and his right side appeared weak. I wondered if he was really working or if his friends and colleagues were covering for him.

  2. Delaware Dem says:

My heart sank too, and … this sounds morbid… but I expected it. Take this armchair diagnosis for what it is worth (nothing), but my speculation is that Mr. Biden is suffering from Cerebal AVM, or arteriovenous malformation, which can lead to strokes and seizures. Treatable, but it can also strike without warning.

More added to the News Journal story above:

New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon learned late Tuesday that Biden was seeking treatment at Walter Reed. “I’m very concerned that he’s alright,” said Gordon, a friend and political ally of the Bidens. “That’s all I care about. I’ve known him all his life. I’ll be praying that he’s fine.”

Timothy Mullaney, Biden’s former chief of staff who was expected to help with a gubernatorial campaign, also only learned Tuesday evening about Biden’s hospitalization at Walter Reed.

“I’ll probably make some phone calls to try to figure out what’s going on,” Mullaney said.

Mullaney said he had spoken to Biden within the last month, and met with him several weeks ago.

Biden had been keeping a low profile “by design,” Mullaney said, but he expected the former attorney general was serious about a campaign for governor. “I didn’t anticipate we were going to do anything until this summer,” Mullaney said. “Last time we talked he was fine, there was nothing that was going to stop him from running.”

  4. Delaware Dem says:

I’m going to have more to say on Mr. Mullaney’s comments once we know Beau Biden is alright.

  5. Watcher from Afar says:

CNN cites a source close to the family as saying his condition is “serious”. Given just what we know, quite unfortunately for him and his family, Beau Biden will not likely survive to see the next election. His condition is progressive, no doubt about it.

  6. Rufus Y. Kneedog says:

I really don’t feel the need to know more. Obviously he won’t be running.
    Sad sad sad.

  7. AQC says:

He’s not a public official and owes nobody an explanation. But, this is a tired argument. I just hope he gets well.

  8. Delaware Dem says:

I know it is a tired argument. I understand your position. My only response to it is that he is a public figure who at present is an announced candidate for Governor. Until such time as he withdraws from that race, I think the public has a right to know about his medical condition. But whatever. It is obvious that he and the Vice President’s office disagree. So all I can do is bring it up here. And obviously not vote for him in either the primary or general election should he continue to not disclose his medical condition.

Positive thoughts and prayers for Beau and his family.

I have been one of the loudest voices to call for the Biden family to have their privacy in an illness. But now I concede you are right. It has got to stop, and everyone quit pretending he’s going to run for governor. It’s time to open the field up to all the candidates who want to run and stop “place holding” or whatever this is. It’s only fair…

    Fuck off, Tom Gordon.

  12. John Jordan says:

My question is what entitles him to military medical care? Unless he’s retired or active duty, even a veteran isn’t entitled to treatment at Walter Reed. Even as a Major in the DEARNG, he isn’t entitled to military care except when on active duty. Sounds like illegal preference for the VP’s son. Any other NG officer wouldn’t get this care unless it was service connected.

  13. Joanne Christian says:

Wanna bet? He certainly does “deserve ” care, whether your rubric of ‘me Rica rings true or not for access. I’ll personally fill out AR 40/400 or whatever paper it is these days to access that care Major. Because sometimes we get it right in this country, when undocumented guests and Non native Americans show up. We treat them. And this is an easy one. At least he’s insured. We’ll just handle the paperwork, let him be where he wants or needs to be, and then you can go pound sand and pray Karma wasn’t listening to you begrudge a bed for the sick, when we had one right there. That pound of flesh costs much at the scale of goodwill, dignity, and your own humanity.

Besides the profound sadness for Mr. Biden and his family, my first thought upon seeing this post was, “too soon.” Yes, we have a right / need to know if he is actually running, but at this point we can only hope and pray for his health for the sake of his young family.

  15. Dave says:

Beau seems like a decent person. I wish him well. If he chooses to run, I will question his ability to carry out the responsibilities of the office. Until he files for office though, I will just continue to wish him well with whatever he is going through, the details of which I do not have the need to know yet.

Positive thoughts & prayers go out to Beau Biden and his family, during these tough times.

@ Delaware Dem. Beau Biden is not currently campaigning for Governor! He is not making any decision that has a direct impact on the people of Delaware. We and you have no right at this time to know what is going on with his health, it’s none of your business! How dare you speculate (your post on 5/19 @ 7:59pm) what Mr. Biden is in a Dr’s care for. IT IS BETWEEN HIM, HIS FAMILY & DOCTORS! You apparently are not a Dr! Let it go!
