All Eyes on John Carney
His nascent campaign for Governor may hinge on how he votes on Fast Track and the Trans Pacific Partnership, and counting on an anti-Gordon sentiment will not be enough to overcome going against the Unions and the American worker. From the New York Times:
“With a final House showdown coming on Friday on President Obama’s push for accelerated power to pursue a sweeping trade agreement, the vote brokering has begun — and it is all tilting to the right. The legislative changes clearly show the fate of the president’s expanded trade-negotiating power rests with Republicans, not Democrats, even more so because Republicans have blocked provisions favored by pro-trade Democrats.”
This is your cover, Mr. Carney. The Republicans added non germane right wing toxic pill amendments, so you had to vote no. That is what you tell your business cronies. And there is hope since Carney was not among the 8 traitorous Democrats who kept the bill alive yesterday in a rule vote.
From Food Democracy Now:
“8 Democrats Are Now Listed as Likely Targets to Vote Yes on Fast Track – Please Call them Today!
1. John Carney – Delaware: (202) 225-4165
2. Joaquín Castro Texas: (202) 225-3236
3. Jim Costa – California: (202) 225-3341
4. Susan Davis – California: (202) 225-2040
5. Steny Hoyer – Maryland: (202) 225-4131
6. Seth Moulton – Massachusetts: (202) 225-8020
7. Beto O’Rourke – Texas: (202) 225-4831
8. Ed Perlmutter – Colorado: (202) 225-2645”
Well… I’ve become pretty cynical with regard to calling these block heads, but with his obvious ambition to be governor on the line, perhaps this is a call that might actually have impact.
I called.
Called carney’s office and was informed he was voting against TPP, eyes on the governor prize most likely but I’ll take it.
Just called. Office person says he’s voting NO on Fast Track. I said he also needs to vote no on TPP.
Everything, other than what Ezra just posted, has said that Carney was undecided or leaning no. He has been a union backed candidate for a while. The unions lined up for him during his last run for Governor. I don’t know why people thought he was voting against it. See article below from earlier this month. Here is an excerpt..
“But in a setback for the White House, two undecided Democrats — Reps. John Carney (Del.) and Cedric Richmond (La.) — said this week that they’re leaning no.
“I’ve got a whole set of criteria as it relates to Delaware, and there are a number of things that they’re just not there yet on,” Carney said. ”

It is official. Carney is a “No” on Fast tack, and a big YES on TPP. This sucks.
Everybody who put the pressure on him deserves credit. I don’t think he would have voted no if (a) he wasn’t running for governor; and (b) he didn’t feel the heat from opponents.
Now to put pressure on his TPP vote. He seems very committed to supporting his corporate overseers on that one.
I called as well and explained that I was worried that he wouldn’t listen to my opinion because I didn’t give him a lot of money. Also said I’d vote for anyone other than him if he ever ran for anything else again. I was passionately against fast track and TPP, or as Thom Hartmann calls it, the Southern Hempisphere American Free Trade Act [SHAFTA].
I understand that although TPA/TPP were tied together in the House ( if first one fails second one automatically fails, The R’s are having a standalone vote on TPP.
Let’s see where Carney goes with that.
According to this article:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/06/12/1392798/-Which-28-Dems-Just-Voted-for-Fast-Track
Carney voted FOR the TAA bill that failed by a 3-1 margin before voting against TPP.
Had the TAA portion passed, Carney’s vote would not have mattered in stopping Fast Track.
Even when he does the ‘right’ thing, he only does it half right.

What’s the sound of one hand golf-clapping?
The comments on his FB page are gushing. Maybe he’ll like being popular?
So it’s comments on his FB page about this vote and not his 64 percent re-election that make him popular?
When you only get 64% against Rose Izzo, it’s evidence you’re UNpopular.
Boom goes the dynamite.
