Trump is Done

Filed in National by on July 20, 2015

It had to happen sooner or later. With his sneering and cynical remarks about John McCain’s service and captivity in Vietnam, Trump has brought his candidacy to a close. It happened sooner, not later.

Everyone knew he was going to say something that he couldn’t bluster through, or shrug off, and now the feeding frenzy is on. I’d be very surprised if he decides to keep blowing money on this into August.

  1. puck says:

Wait for the polls. McCain is not well liked by the crazies

  2. pandora says:

I agree with puck – let’s wait for the polls. Republicans only honor certain military service. They’re quite happy spitting on certain servicemen. (See Kerry, John; Cleland, Max)

  3. ben says:

The republicans are also very stupid and do whatever Fox tells them to do (Romney). Walker is the monied favorite and he can be just as Teahadi as Trump. Im not so upset that Trump said what he said about McCain… more that he couldn’t wait until March or something after he had already won too many primaries to be shoved aside.

  4. Geezer says:

His audience loves this. This will make him stronger, at least for the time being.

  5. Jason330 says:

These statements hurt him, and they are not going away.

Everyone here is underestimating the deep desire of the GOP, Fox News, his rivals to get him out of the race. This is a thread that will be picked at and picked at until everything comes apart.

  6. Geezer says:

That will happen eventually, I suppose, but right now this is the best reality show on television.

  7. pandora says:

I don’t doubt that the GOP, FOX and his rivals want him out… just not yet. The crazier Trump is the more his rivals get to portray themselves as moderates. And let’s face it, in the long run, that will benefit Walker, Bush, Rubio, etc.. We know the press will latch onto this BS “moderate” meme even tho Trump’s rivals agree with 99% of what he says.

My bet… Trump stays around for a while. He serves a very specific purpose.

  8. The Godfather says:

Don’t underestimate the american people’s ( not to mention the republican crazies) ability to support a wacky candidate like Trump. Does anyone remember Ross Perot? I would not be surprised if Trumps numbers don’t go up. A little history. In June 1992 5months before the election, the Gallop National poll was Perot 39%, Bush 31 and Clinton 25%. This was partially the result of him hiring experienced political operatives Republican Ed Rollins and Democrat Hamilton Jurden. Fortunately for all of America he stopped listening to them. They left and he did poorly in the debates. He still polled nearly 20% in the general election and was likely a major if not the deciding factor in Clinton’s election. The one thing both the Media and the Republican’s underestimate with Trump is his ability to self finance an Indepedent Campaign for President. He could drop a billion or two without blinking

  9. Jason330 says:

There is no way he is putting 2 billion into this.

FWIW – here is the DEGOP take:

GOP Chair Issues Statement Praising Senator John McCain

NEWARK, DE — The Chairman of the Delaware Republican Party, Charlie Copeland, today issued the following statement praising Senator John McCain’s service to his country:

“John McCain is an American hero. Period. The sacrifices he has made in defense of our nation can not be disputed. Recent comments by Donald Trump calling into question Senator McCain’s service are a commentary on all of the men and women who serve our country, and they are simply unacceptable.”

  10. Republican David says:

300 million is all he needs to invest. He will and will be a major force.

  11. Republican David says:

I agree that he won’t win, but he will have a chance to win and his ego won’t let him quit. He will double down and run hard. He will hire professionals and by powerful ads which will rock the race. When you have a 9 figure budget, no one can push you out for good or ill. That is just the way it is.

  12. Geezer says:

“The one thing both the Media and the Republican’s underestimate with Trump is his ability to self finance an Indepedent Campaign for President. He could drop a billion or two without blinking”

Almost certainly untrue. Even if his net worth is over a billion dollars, it’s almost entirely tied up in real estate, about the most illiquid asset one could hold.

“[Perot] He still polled nearly 20% in the general election and was likely a major if not the deciding factor in Clinton’s election.”

Your memory has betrayed you. Here’s an account of reality, this one from PollingReport.com:

“Perot exited the race during the Democratic convention in mid-July. In the immediate aftermath of the convention, Gallup had Clinton leading Bush 56% to 34%, clearly a post-convention bounce. But a month later, Clinton still led — by between 17 and 25 points — in half a dozen national media polls, with President Bush not exceeding 37% of the vote in any of them. In mid-September, with Perot still out of the race, an ABC News/Washington Post poll gave Clinton a commanding 58%, with the incumbent still stuck at a very familiar 37%.

“Then, on October 1st, Perot re-entered the race. An October 8-11 poll — done by the Times Mirror Center for The People & The Press, directed by the outstanding Andrew Kohut — found that Clinton had dropped to 48%, with Bush at 35%, and Perot at 8% (in mid-September, they had found Clinton leading Bush 53%-38%). An October 20-22 follow-up poll of the same 1,153 voters surveyed earlier in the month found that Clinton had slipped to 44%, while Bush held at 34%, and Perot had jumped to 19%. The very first sentence of the extensive press release, dated October 26, 1992, noted that, “Ross Perot’s surge in the polls is drawing somewhat more support from Bill Clinton than from George Bush, and the third party candidate seems poised to make more gains that might further narrow Bill Clinton’s nationwide margin.” That press release came out the same morning that Perot’s bizarre charges that Republicans had conspired to ruin his daughter’s wedding floated into the general political consciousness, and that was the end of the Perot surge. Nonetheless, he still drew 19% on Election Day, to Clinton’s 43% and Bush’s 37.5%.”

  13. The Godfather says:

jason he has at least 10 billion. Also he has nearly total name recognition and has much more natural charasmatic appeal than Perot. Also he’s not running against an incumbant President. Not to mention that the republican presidential primary promises to resemble a circular firing squad

  14. Jason330 says:

Well if Josh Marshall says I’m wrong about this, I may be wrong.

Josh’s take, all of which have already been mentioned here by you astute MFers :

    1) Trump is a jerk and a clown and arrogant beyond belief, people already know all of that.

    2) McCain is a hated RINO and loser.

    3) The angry 20%ers he is going for don’t mind insulting decorated war veterans if they are Democrats or Rinos.

    4) The angry 20%ers he is going for actually LIKE it when he pisses everyone off.

  15. Geezer says:

“When you have a 9 figure budget, no one can push you out for good or ill.”

He does not have a 9-figure budget. I doubt he has an 8-figure budget. You have to be as dumb and gullible as David to believe otherwise.

He has hired no political professionals. He has not released his tax returns. Until he does either, you’re being played for suckers — but then, people like David are such suckers they should come with cardboard sticks up their asses.

  16. Geezer says:

“he has at least 10 billion. ”

No, he doesn’t, and what he does have is entirely tied up in real estate — except for the name-licensing agreements, which is exactly the cash source that is drying up.

  17. donviti says:

It’s all cyclical. Same EXACT thing happened last time. The idiot Herman Cain. Oh and remember Tommy Thompson? Where’s Pat Buchanan when you need him? Tom Tancredo?

The base loves fraudulent crazies. There’ll be another “contender” and then he’ll flame out.

    Jeb Bush. Done. Period.

Everything else is like somone in here already said. It’s to make the nominee (Jeb) seem middle of the road.

  18. Republican David says:

Wrong, Geezer, Trump has 300 million just in cash sitting around in accounts.
    http://www.politico.com/story/2015/06/donald-trump-net-worth-119063.html

  19. ben says:

And i hope he spends every penny on his loss

  20. Jason330 says:

David, I geuss, didn’t read tot he second sentence of that article.

“As of June 30, 2014, Trump had $302.3 million in cash and marketable securities, in things like “multiple aircraft, land, golf courses and resorts, etc.”

    Those are not liquid assets.

  21. SussexAnon says:

The GOP apparatus including Fox News will try to make his McCain statements the narrative and get him out of the race.
All Trump needs is another repeat offender illegal immigrant to commit a crime and he is back in the race.

  22. mouse says:

He’s still big in the bitter clinger and talk radio crowd

  23. pandora says:

“The GOP apparatus including Fox News will try to make his McCain statements the narrative and get him out of the race.”

Not yet. Trump serves his purpose of making the other GOP candidates palatable/moderate. The GOP apparatus won’t kick in until just prior to Iowa – because if taking Trump out now was actually a priority, it would have happened already. Don’t believe me? Read Republican David’s comments. Not seeing a lot of outrage there. The GOP picks and chooses which veterans to support – not all veterans are created equal in the GOP’s eyes.

Don’t believe me? Hop on over to conservative blogs and see what they’re saying about this.

Altho… they probably should take him out now. Their crazy base (approx. 24% of primary voters) loves his racist, bigoted message… and that could spell trouble. So, how do they get rid of Trump while wallowing in his message?

  24. cassandra_m says:

Fox News has been HUGELY supportive of Trump ever since he stepped into the race. Which is interesting since both Murdock and the WSJ have taken Trump to task for some of his statements.

  25. SussexAnon says:

My conservative friends have gone radio silent for the last few days. They must be awaiting talking points.

  26. pandora says:

Oooh lookie here, Jonathon Moseley proves my point! (I’ve bolded the important parts!)

    Jonathon Moseley

“Donald Trump was right in what he was thinking. Donald Trump stepping in the pail horribly in what he said.

I made the point that Christine O’Donnell was not unusual when she stumbled over her words a few times.

So a very successful billionaire can put his foot in his mouth, too.

Barack Obama says the Constitution is 2,000 years old (20 centuries).

Barack Obama said that he campaigned in 57 States.

Barack Obama said that his opponent did nt attack hi for his Muslim faith until George Stephanopolous corrected him on TV – you mean your Christian faith.

What do we mean that someone put their foot in their mouth?

We mean that what someone said was clearly not what they meant to say.

That is a very different concept from someone INTENDED to say what was offensive.

We mean by “foot in mouth” that someone intended to communicate X, but instead scrambled their words and said Y instead, perhaps betraying genuine insensitivity and tone deafess along the way.

But we know that Obama did not really believe there are 57 States.

How can we know what he was thinking, to parody themes by SoS and Nitpicker and others attacking me? How do we know what someone is thinking? Well, we can view things I context. It is obvious from the context and surrounding circumstances that Obama did not really believe that the USA has 57 States. He just said something stupid.

We know for a fact that Christine O’Donnell — in a heated exchange debating someone disagreeing where you have to squeeze in your point in seconds — left out the word “cells.”

We know that because she was clearly and unmistakably referring to National Geographic and MSNBC new stories about scientists, cloning human brain cells and implanting them into mice, and nearly quoted from those news stories word for word, but omitted the final word “cells”.” We also recognize that he producers of the TV show set up the topic and invited guests to address THEIR chosen topic. Christine did not choose the topic.

We know that Trump did not even mention veterans, only McCain. We can tell from the context and the flow of the conversation that Trump was dissing McCain and only McCain, because McCain had just dissed Trump and Trump’s supporters as “crazies.”

McCain’s entire career is built on (a) trashing conservatives and (b) reminding everyone that he is a war hero.

Trump I believe made a JOKE — although a very, very POOR joke — when he said “I prefer people who don’t get captured.” From the flow of the back and forth, it is obvious to me that this was a FLIPPANT remark, intended to be flippant, that is a joke. It was a BAD joke that failed miserably and should never have bee attempted. But it was a joke.

Never did Donald Trump say that military servicemen or veterans who get captured are less of a war hero than those who don’t get captured.

But it sure sounded like it.

One of problems here is the idea that EVEYONE who serves in uniform is a war HERO.

I think that Trump was implicitly reacting to he idea that being a veteran is a great thing, but calling someone a war HERO requires far more than just putting on a uniform in war time.

Not everyone will like or agree with that distinction. I just mean I think that is a distinction that was implicit in Trump’s remarks.”

And that, my friends, is the GOP crazy – that makes up a large part of the primary voters!

  27. donviti says:

I have to pick myself up off the floor because….I agree with some of what you bolded:

“One of problems here is the idea that EVEYONE who serves in uniform is a war HERO.”

This is our problem in our country. I go to a Blue Rocks game and usually in the sixth inning or around there, they put a war veteran on the bigscreen, then ask everyone to say thank you and ask all the veterans in the audience to stand up and get a round of applause. Lumping them altogether with a person that served during a war.

It’s how they view veterans now. We all landed on effing beaches to save Private Ryan.

It’s horrible. I’m a veteran. I’m not a war hero. And fox news and every one else treats the military like every god damned person in a uniform is a war hero. Until they aren’t and it fits their narrative to slam them as a deserter or traitor.

They’ve created their own mess. You can’t criticize the military anymore. It’s how they have tried to frame Obama as a bad leader that disrespects the military.

  28. Jason330 says:

I agree with Donviti. The bullshit that goes down at every NHL, NFL or Major League Baseball game these days is ridiculous. Give teacher’s a fifth of that appreciation for fucksake.

  29. Geezer says:

Wrong yourself, David. Here’s the next paragraph:

“The one-page document provides a rough sketch, at best, of Trump’s vast business dealings.”

The financial disclosure system is set up to reveal people who try to hide their wealth. We’ve never had a candidate who tried to inflate it.

It’s pure, unadulterated bullshit until we see something specific. All he has said is what the properties are worth; he has released no information on how much he owes on them. Over-leveraging his properties is how he ended up in bankruptcy court four times.

Which is why his tax returns are so important. He claims, with no evidence, that he’s worth billions. Let’s see what he represented the value as when he had to report it to the IRS.

    Also, this:

“Real estate licensing deals and other branded developments make up the biggest chunk of Trump’s assets, coming in at $3.32 billion.”

He has almost certainly overvalued these licensing deals, and that’s exactly what’s drying up as he continues to bloviate from his high colonic area.

  30. SussexAnon says:

Trump has over inflated his net worth before. It was revealed during one of his bankruptcy proceeding that he was worth a whole lot less than what he was publicly claiming.

  31. Geezer wrote: “He has almost certainly overvalued these licensing deals, and that’s exactly what’s drying up as he continues to bloviate from his high colonic area.”

A friend of mine often dreamed of starting a soul band that he would call “The High Colonics”. I guess soul with some psychedelia interwoven into the mix.

Plus frequent trips to the bathroom.
