Who is running for what (statewide) ?

Filed in National by on August 12, 2015

Via Celia’s blog: The two latest people to announce their intention to announce that they are running for something are Ciro Poppiti and Jeff Cragg.

Poppiti, a lawyer who is the New Castle County register of wills, has designs on joining the Democratic field for lieutenant governor…

Poppiti was not ready to make it official on Tuesday, but he acknowledged he could have an announcement shortly.

“I feel like the baton is coming to me,” Poppiti said.

Is the Dem baton invested with greater magic than the Republican watermelon of doom? I guess we’ll see.

Cragg, the Republican candidate for governor in 2012, is said to be looking at insurance commissioner, although it would mean a primary. George Parish, a Republican who used to be the Sussex County clerk of the peace, is already running.

Carney is running for governor, as is Tom Gordon. Here is the rest of the rundown of running and “said to be’s”:

Colin Bonini R – running for governor
Lacey Lafferty R – running for governor

Collin O’Mara D – running for congress
Bryon Short D – running for congress
Bryan Townsend D – running for congress
Hans Reigle R – running for congress

Brad Eaby D – lt governor
Greg Fuller D – lt governor
Kathy McGuiness D – lt governor
Ciro Poppiti D – lt governor
Sherry Dorsey Walker – D lt governor

Karen Weldin Stewart D – insurance commissioner
Trini Navarro D – insurance commissioner
Jeff Cragg R – insurance commissioner
George Parish R – insurance commissioner

I’m hearing that Gordon is backing off his designs on running for governor.
Ciro Poppiti’s imminent announcement for lt.gov. adds credence to that assessment. Ciro had been considering a run for county exec — but he certainly wouldn’t primary Gordon. So, if he’s not running for exec, you can bet that Gordon is aiming for a fourth term.

Gordon is nothing more than a despot. He should just go away & collect his generous pension(s).

  3. The Godfather says:

Has anyone told these people that have announced for Lt Governor that the main qualification for the office is that you have to take over should something happen to the Governor. None of this sad lot is within a million miles of that test. Now we have Ciro Poppitti about to join. Why not? He’s as unqualified as those that have already announced. Not to mention that he is almost totally devoid of any charismatic qualities. It’s my concern that if our only choice is one of these midgets, we could lose to a good R epublican.

Lieutenant governor is seen as an easy job and a quick way to get statewide name recognition and build a base for four or eight years without having to do the heavy lifting of Congress or IC or AG or even Treasurer. And if the big cheese has health problems or gets indicted, you’re sitting pretty.

What I can’t understand is why Mitch or someone else sane in Sussex has not sat Greg Fuller down and told him: “Hey, Greg, you’re a nice guy, hard worker, great singing voice, but you couldn’t hold on to the one county seat that Ruth Ann handed you on a silver platter and you last held office five years ago, so just why do you think you should be a heartbeat away from running the state? Don’t embarrass yourself even more.”

  5. Jeffrey Santoro says:

With social media… a 24/7 news cycle… and your entire life under a microscope, it takes a lot of courage to run for office; especially in Delaware. I like the process of vetting the best candidate for the job, but sometimes people speak about what they don’t know, and that’s just not right.

My name is Jeffrey Santoro and I am a proud Delawarean.

I have known Ciro Poppiti for more than thirty years. He is an honor graduate of Salesianum and Princeton University. He is a volunteer extraordinaire through his work with the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Delaware All-State Theatre, and many other non-profit organizations. He is a protector of our freedoms with the Delaware National Guard and currently holds the rank of Captain. He is one of the most generous lawyer’s you’d ever meet. He is a family man.

While Ciro has not announced is intentions to run for any office outside of Register of Wills, he is more than qualified to serve at any capacity and at any level. He is uber smart, approachable, and filled with more integrity than most. The best leaders are those who listen, learn, and act. Ciro epitomizes these qualities.

And some of the posts to this blog are ignorant about the position of Lt. Governor. Actually insulting. Former Lt. Governor Matt Denn, for instance, was transformational in leading that Office. He focused on children’s issues, healthcare, and education. His work never stopped (and now he is doing fantastic as our Attorney General). The position of Lt. Governor is not an easy job. It requires skills, smarts, and balance.

I don’t know all of the potential candidates running for this Office. I’m sure that they each feel they will bring unique qualifications to the role of Lt. Governor. I will say only what I know; Ciro Poppiti is compassionate, energetic, and qualified. Ciro Poppiti is one of the most charismatic people I have ever known. Ciro Poppiti has major concern for the people of Delaware and will work tirelessly for each of us. Ciro Poppiti is the real deal!

@mediawatch why wouldn’t Gordon take on Carney in a primary? Especially since in this Presidential election year the primary IS the election. Your sources might be wishful thinkers.

  7. mediawatch says:

    Jason,
The prime reason for Gordon not challenging Carney in a primary would be that his brain (and/or his advisors) have overpowered his ego. (No mean feat, we must admit.)
I’m not about to argue the logic of why Gordon should or should not primary Carney. Admittedly, most of us would love to see this because we believe that even a lackluster Carney could best Gordon in a statewide race.
However, if you look at this in a rational political sense, from Gordon’s perspective, no one in the party is going to challenge him if he seeks another term as county exec and, barring a major scandal, no Republican is going to beat him, so he’s got a clear path to an unprecedented fourth term in which he can continue to manipulate county funds to avoid raising taxes, departing as a hero in 2020 while leaving his successor drowning in a sea of red ink.
Not to mention that, as governor, he would be saddled with major budget shortfalls, an uncertain economy, an education system run amok and a General Assembly that’s nowhere near as malleable as the New Castle County Council.
So, once Gordon puts common sense ahead of his ego, a return to county exec becomes obvious. Or maybe another term as county exec, where he easily vanquishes his two-bit rivals, really is the best way to satisfy his ego.

je vous remercie beaucoup pour la grande analyse

  9. The Godfather says:

Jeffrey Santoro. Ciro is a nice person but he’s certainly no Matt Denn. If he’s the most charasmatic man you know, you need to get out into world.

  10. SussexAnon says:

    Collin O’Mara? lol

  11. anon says:

Lt. Governor = Kathy McGuiness. She’s the only voice of reason on the Rehoboth Town Commission, she has experience as a small business person and she’s well educated. With a NCC candidate for Governor, like Carney or Gordon, it would make a solid, statewide team. McGuiness could step into the Governor’s seat without missing a step. Don’t underestimate her, she’s a strong candidate.

  12. Geezer says:

“The position of Lt. Governor is not an easy job. It requires skills, smarts, and balance.”

The position of Lt. Governor is, officially, a part-time job that requires absolutely nothing in the way of duties beyond breaking tie votes in the Senate, and it pays accordingly. The office is so unimportant that it currently stands unoccupied, and I seriously doubt anyone has been inconvenienced by that vacancy.

  13. mouse says:

The rehoboth government is the most reactionary in DE

  14. anon says:

The rehoboth government is the most reactionary in DE

Yes it is, that’s why McGuinness stands out as a Commissioner, she gathers the facts and she rejects knee jerk regulating.

  15. Jason330 says:

Celia’s blog says: “This does not even include Chris Bullock, who toyed with running for lieutenant governor before deciding to go for a second term as the Democratic president of the New Castle County Council.”
