Sean Barney just got our attention

Filed in National by on January 8, 2016

I am still a Bryan Townsend partisan, but Sean Barney just got my attention through the announcement of his campaign team.

Dear Jason,

Our campaign to bring progressive change to Congress continues to grow.

Today, I am proud to announce the coming together of an exceptionally talented, service-oriented, and progressive campaign team. The people on this team have helped principled leaders render dedicated service to the people of our state. They have helped elect post-9/11 veterans to Congress from coast to coast. They are synonymous with some of the most important progressive campaigns in our country’s recent history.

Ian McConnel was the chief deputy to our late Attorney General, Iraq War veteran Beau Biden. Ian has served the nation as a Marine Corps infantry officer and Special Assistant United States Attorney. He has served the State of Delaware as State Solicitor and head of the Consumer Protection and Fraud Division of the Department of Justice.

Joe Trippi cut his teeth working for “The Dream Will Never Die” presidential campaign of the late, great Senator Ted Kennedy. The New Republic has called him the man who “reinvented campaigning” for pioneering in 2004 many of the digital, new media campaign strategies that Barack Obama went on to use to make history in 2008.

Danny Franklin and Pete Giangreco helped Barack Obama ascend from the Land of Lincoln to the White House. In addition to his work for the President, Danny has helped Cory Booker emerge from his service as a reform mayor of a city confronted with many of the same challenges as Wilmington to his current position as a criminal justice reform leader in the United State Senate. Pete has helped Iraq War veteran Tammy Duckworth get elected to Congress, where she has been a forceful advocate for veterans and for refugees from the conflicts post-9/11 veterans know first-hand.

Haley Scott worked for a friend of mine from the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard, a fellow Iraq War veteran, Seth Moulton. She helped Seth win his congressional campaign against a nine-term incumbent and become part of a small but growing core of young, service-oriented leaders in Washington pushing Congress to grow a spine and get back to work. She has served Seth as his finance director. I am honored that she has joined this campaign as our finance director.

Marissa Bauman is a brilliant, innovative entrepreneur in Smyrna, Delaware. She is a small business owner, graphic designer, and web developer. We are fortunate, and have just a bit more flair, for the fact that she has joined us as our creative director on this campaign.

I learned in the Marine Corps that accomplishing the mission starts with building a team that shares core values and is dedicated to one another and a common goal larger than themselves. I say to you proudly today and without a shadow of a doubt that a team has come together in support of this effort that is a team like no other.

I thank you for the support you have given us in getting to this point. We have a long journey ahead of us, but we could not ask for a better start.

Yours,

Sean

I need to know Sean’s fundraising numbers. That is a lot of high priced talent. On the flip side, I hear that Bryon Short has brought in a new national fundraising team to step up his fundraising. But I am intrigued here. He is clearly pursuing a more progressive campaign. Now, if Sean has improved as a candidate himself, then he might be cooking with gas.

  1. MIke says:

If Joe Trippi is involved in this race (especially with Sean Barney) in any way outside of a monthly consulting fee for ‘services rendered’ I will eat all of the food at the Jamboree and then jump in the Bay.

    Not a chance.

  2. Way too much Semper Fi for me. Probably that Vote Vets link he has. Everything has ‘Iraq vet’ attached to it.

  3. Emma says:

How progressive are post 9/11 vets who have been elected? Genuine question.

  4. Delaware Dem says:

Well, Emma, it is split like everything else. Patrick Murphy of Pennsylvania was very progressive.

  5. Emma says:

Not surprising. I was asking because Sean’s statement makes it sound like getting post 9/11 vets elected is a good thing in and of itself.

  6. Mitch Crane says:

Mike–thanks for the offer. We usually have food for 200 at the Jamboree. If Trippi’s involvement meets your challenge, you cam buy 200 tickets and we will prepare a doggie truck.

Jamboree is the Sunday after the Primary.

  7. Joe Trippi says:

Mike – get ready to eat. Might want to check out the last house race we did — for Seth Moulton. DM me at @joetrippi before the jamboree. -Trippi

  8. Delaware Dem says:

And yes, I can confirm that comment above is actually from the real Joe Trippi, in case there is any doubt.

  9. Jason330 says:

Da big guns coming to the Diamond State for a throw down. Hopefully the eventual winner will be able to hold off Hans Wriggles.

  10. Steve Newton says:

With respect to Sean Barney vs Short/Townsend (and truth in advertising I support Bryan there), I wonder that if Sean has improved as a candidate himself, then he might be cooking with gas what he would be cooking, since his resume of actual accomplishments is pretty damn slender compared to the other two in the race.

I’m thinking of the campaign slogan: If you want more CARNEY, vote BARNEY.

  11. mediawatch says:

    Steve,
Would be even better if Sean were running for Lt.Gov.

For billboards, we could tighten it up even more:

    LIKE CARNEY?
    LOVE BARNEY

  12. NCCAnon says:

Advertising linking Barney and Carney actually would be great for Sean…considering Carney is one of the biggest vote getters in the history of this state. The world outside of this blog’s commentator’s is totally enamored of Carney.

  13. Geezer says:

He’s one of the biggest vote-getters provided he runs against nobodies. And I have never, in following this guy’s career since he first ran for elective office, heard anyone outside his office say anything truly positive about him. “Enamored” is not the word you’re looking for.

  14. puck says:

Trippi needs to look at the records of Delaware elected Democrats before lending his name. Barney’s Markell/Carper/Third Way connections are too much for me (not to mentiont the excessive semper fi). Carper was one of the guys who scotched the ACA public option in committee. Carper publicly regretted the 2013 fiscal cliff deal because it didn’t cut Social Security. And Markell’s “Atlantic” manifesto attempted to fluff up the failed economics of trickle-down, in a rehash of a 2013 Third Way opinion piece in the WSJ. Barney needs to specifically renounce all of that to gain my trust.

  15. The Godfather says:

Are we talking about the same Sean Barney that barely got over 40% in the Treasures race? I don’t care who he hires he.ll be a bad 4th in this race. The field is a tough field as it should be since congressional and senate seats in Del come open less often than the 17 year locust appears. If you want to gauge the next member of Congress on the progressive agenda you need to call Lisa Blunt Bradley. She should win in a walk. She is an able, well- financed professional woman of color with a thoroughbred political pedigree. She should have significant demographic and fund raising advantages. Women represent more than 55% of the Democratic electorate. Rumor has it that she is confident that she can raise significantly more than a million dollars and has made great progress in Washington with national womens groups and individual contributors. Enormous DC credibility comes from her endorsement by Emily’s List. Being an attractive African American candidate coupled with her father and her sister’s roladex and a contentious Mayor’s race in Wilmington should get her OBama like percentages of the African American Vote. To review the bidding,Good Candidate,Blacks, Women, Money versus three white boys from New Castle County. Looks like a romp to me

  16. Tony Allen just sent a facebook link to 100 people about Lisa Blunt Rochester’s campaign announcement event Jan. 23rd.

No one has filed except Bryan Townsend for this race but I hear Bryon Short is filing very soon.

I replied to the email above (it was in my inbox) asking Sean when he intended to file but he didn’t answer me.
