“Sunset my ass”

That should have been the be subject line of Copeland’s angry email. It would have been more honest. Instead he went with:

GOP Statement On Democrats Proposed ‘Temporary’ Gas Tax Increase

When I read that headline I was left wondering if Copeland’s statement was going to be the typical “Grrr!! TAXES BAD!!” nonsense the issues from the ass end of the DEGOP every once in a while, or was it going to offer some Republican alternative? Needless to say, I wasn’t wondering for long.

Newark, DE –The Chairman of the Delaware Republican Party, Charlie Copeland, this morning released the following statement after learning of a proposal by Democratic lawmakers that would increase the state’s gas tax over the next year:

“The last time Delaware’s Democrats increased taxes, they told us that the increases would be ‘temporary’ and would ‘sunset.’ They lied to us — and those tax increases became permanent, hitting the paycheck of average, hard-working Delawareans. Now Democrats Sean Matthews and Michael Mulrooney are proposing a huge increase in gas taxes and they are claiming that they will ’sunset’ these taxes.

“Sunset my ass.

“You can’t fool us twice. Democrats would have you believe that this is a ‘temporary’ tax that would ‘sunset’ next year. Well, we don’t have to look over our shoulder too far to see that, when it comes to taxes, Democrats don’t believe in the word ‘temorary’ (sic). It is simply one more move by progressive Democrats to push for big government.

“We need to take swift action defeat this irresponsible proposal or we can expect to lose much of the savings they are now enjoying at the pump.”

I am not one to get on someone’s case for spelling mistakes, but shouldn’t Charlie have a proof reader, especially when he is so lathered up?

  2. puck says:

“Sunset” doesn’t mean that it is forbidden to extend the tax. It means that when the sunset date arrives the GA may decide to extend it, or to find other money to replace it. All that can be done up front is to include the sunset provision in the bill creating the tax, and that is in fact the proposal.

When is the sun going to set on Charlie Copeland’s reign over the Delaware GOP? It’s been as successful as Rich Kotite’s reign as head coach of the Eagles…

  4. Geezer says:

Yeah, that gas tax is really going to hit Charlie where it hurts. Limousines don’t get such great mileage.

  5. puck says:

If Charlie prefers we could fund the roads by increasing the estate tax.

  6. Jason330 says:

I could be reading this wrong. That sentence might be a plea… “(please) Sunset my ass.”

    Like “Please clap”

See, this is why I hate being on the same side of an issue as these jokers. It is just embarrassing how illogical they are.

“progressive Democrats to push for big government.” Really? Roads are big government now? Of all of the arguments against this, they come up with this tired ass line? Screw it, I’ll shut up and pay if it gives these losers another loss.

  8. SussexAnon says:

It won’t be progressive democratic big gov’t that pushes gas prices back up to $3+ a gallon.

It will be the monopoly of oil producing countries working together to limit production and increase price.

  9. Mikem2784 says:

And our inability to continue to conserve while prices are down. Demand matters, along with supply.
