NJ coverage of House Debate pretty thin, or the debate was thin
I guess the NJ’s Adam Duvernay was expecting some fireworks.
The candidates didn’t throw a single punch Tuesday night.
At the University of Delaware College Democrats’ debate inside Mitchell Hall on campus, three of the four Democrats running for the state’s single congressional seat agreed on almost every point.
On the Dow Chemical-DuPont merger, the only issue I have lingering questions for Townsend, Duvernay doesn’t give much:
The Dow Chemical-DuPont merger was a sticky issue, the candidates said, though the deal to keep part of the company here was important and necessary for Delaware. Townsend, who actually had a say in the deal, said the future of such policies must remain focused on measurable outcomes so the money the government offers such companies doesn’t go to waste.
My sense is that Townsend got his arm twisted pretty good on that one, but who knows.
Based on this News Journal piece, Mike Miller (by virtue of the fact that he is treated as a legitimate third voice) appears to come out ahead.
Wow, the writer spends more time complaining that they didn’t argue about substantial issues such as “hand” size instead of actually covering what they did say in more depth. I wish Delaware had at least one real media outlet.
That said, from what was actually there, Miller sounds more like a Republican or at least a “Carney” Democrat than the other two. Townsend seems a bit more progressive than Barney at this point, but Barney seems to be trying to tack left realizing that the Democratic primary on this IS the election.
Was anyone actually there who can provide more detail / analysis?
“Townsend seems a bit more progressive than Barney at this point…”
What part of the journalist’s story contributed to that interpretation?
UD College Democrats posted the Twiiter hashtag for the debate was #UDDemsDebate. There isn’t a lot more information though. It looks like the video will be posted on stn49.com.
Thanks!
This:
“Asked if they supported subsidizing tuition for community college for all Americans, Townsend said yes. Barney suggested creating a service-based plan that would help send more people to the right college.”
Since the journalist does not report he said “no,” nor is there a full transcript available, I’d say your conclusion based on that single line is “a bit” flawed.
In fact, I think the journalist missed the word “also,” as in Barney also supports a service-based plan.
When judging who is the progressive champion, I’d take a really close look at where candidates are getting their support from vs. what they claim to support.
That story was pathetic.
hmm, are you referring to endorsements or the team of advisors and staff who support the candidate?
Any news on what Lisa Blunt Rochester’s scheduling conflict was?
Hmm is right. Follow the money baby. Townsend knows who his daddies are.
Delaware State News has somewhat more substantive coverage of the debate.
Stop! Comments about Townsend will be met with righteous indignation on this site. Don’t ask questions about his record. Just listen to his words. He “sounds” progressive, thats all that matters.
Meh. Who cares about comments about the progressiveness of any candidate from folks who support either Tom Gordon or John Carney?
Because true progressives take money from donors with far-right giving history. But it’s OK, I guess it’s just like Townsend’s job as a corporate lawyer. Where his money comes from doesn’t influence him.
And I don’t support Tom Gordon, fo sho. And I guess I support John Carney because he’s the only person running? I don’t really have a choice.
But whatever. This is the same nonsense you all did with Markell and look how that worked out for you. I’m sure this time is different! Si se puede!
