It looks like it’s happening!!!! Warren to be VP.
The Boston Globe is reported last night that it looks very likely that the presumptive presidential nominee of the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton, is going to choose Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren to be her running mate, making it the first ticket in American history with two women on it. Why? How? Because of Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid:
“Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid has been actively reviewing Massachusetts rules for filling a US Senate vacancy, another indication of the seriousness with which Democrats are gaming out the possibility of Elizabeth Warren joining likely presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s ticket.
“The upshot of Reid’s review is that Senate Democrats may have found an avenue to block or at least narrow GOP Governor Charlie Baker’s ability to name a temporary replacement and prevent the Senate from flipping to a Democratic majority if Warren were to leave the chamber. That suggests the issue is not as significant an obstacle as Reid previously feared.”
“In the event of a Senate or House vacancy, Massachusetts currently requires a special election to be held within 145 to 160 days. In the interim, the governor has the authority to appoint a successor. But Reid’s team has identified a portion of the law that allows an officeholder to start the special election clock by filing a resignation letter, but also announcing an intention to vacate the seat at a later date.
“In theory, Warren could file such a letter 145 days before the Jan. 20, 2017 inauguration and successfully block Baker from picking any temporary replacement.”
I am not at all worried about the Republican Governor of Massachusetts appointing a replacement for a brief four month period. So long as Massachusetts Democrats do not nominate Martha Coakley, we will win the special election.
Still to be determined: what Hillary and Warren think of this.
“So long as Massachusetts Democrats do not nominate Martha Coakley, we will win the special election.”
Well, yes, there’s that.
Also, what if Baker is the R candidate?
Having said that, bring it on!
Martha Chokely. Please no!
Wash the stars out of your eyes.
This would be terrible. Warren needs to be in the Senate, where she can get stuff done, not in the Vice-Presidency cutting ribbons at shopping centers and squiring foreign dignitaries about.
Furrfu.
I don’t think Hillary wants her for her positions on the economy. Hillary’s presidency would be a never-ending media search for discord between P and VP. And I hope Warren is smart enough not to sign up just to be a comedy writer explaining how Republicans suck. Hillary might like that when directed against Trump, but wouldn’t tolerate it directed against her donor base.
Best spin: Hillary is a good steward of the status quo but retires after one term, delivering the Presidency to Warren five years from now.
Worst spin: VP Warren is muzzled and neutered by D donors, and loses her progressive edge.
Trial balloon.
This story is about as useful as a Gov. Markell speech on the environment.
I’m in.
While I fully expect Hillary to disappoint us with someone like Virginia DINO Kaine, my ‘sheer genius’ choice is still out there.
Only caveat: It’s a genius choice only if Trump is the nominee. And nobody here has yet mentioned the name.
Who? Obama?
I could tease you by asking ‘Which Obama?’
But I won’t. No, the genius of this pick is not for mere mortals to figure out.
Oprah? That’s what I came up with, given your hint…
Uh, no.
I think I know…Does this genius pick also have a spouse who was involved in politics?
Well, I don’t think it can be any former President who has served two terms in office (Obama or B.Clinton) can be VP. The VP has to have the same qualifications as the President (i.e. natural born citizen, 35 years old). But if you have served two terms as President, you are no longer qualified to be President. So, if President Hillary Clinton dies in office, neither Vice President Obama nor Vice President Bill Clinton can succeed her, and so the mantle passes to either Speaker Paul Ryan or Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
So genius pick… I am well and truly stumped. To me, the only genius pick is Elizabeth Warren.
Jill Biden? Joe Biden again?
I am refining my first guess. Is the genius candidate a former governor, with an impressive body of work?
You guys aren’t even warm…although there IS an Elizabeth Warren connection of sorts (hint/hint).
And, yes, I’d love Warren for Veep.
I’ll give you a bit of a clue. The choice is designed to do optimal damage to the Republican Party.
My second guess was Jesse Ventura… guess I was wrong, but that would be fun. With your clue, I’d have to start thinking about offspring of past GOP candidates.
Ron Reagan Jr hasn’t really done anything remotely qualifying.
The choice is designed to do optimal damage to the Republican Party.
I have to assume you don’t mean picking an actual Republican, right? I am going to proceed on that assumption.
Ok, optimal damage to the Republican Party. I am going to have to begin a game of 20 questions.
Is the genius candidate a public officeholder of some sort currently?
Clinton-Romney 2016.
You heard it here second: http://www.rollcall.com/news/opinion/ultimate-hillary-clinton-running-mate
No way. Talk about undercutting your argument
@ES “…although there IS an Elizabeth Warren connection of sorts (hint/hint).”
I hope you don’t suggest Scott Brown… That would be a mistake.
DD, I’m just trying to match up with ES’s cryptic clues. Romney would have the Warren connection (from Massachusetts, holds Ted Kennedy seat that Mitt ran for), and would inflict optimal GOP damage (fracturing the establishment by giving them a conservative option to vote for vs. Trump facism). Not saying it’s a good idea (a horrible one, in fact), but it fits with the info we have.
No, you are right LE, Romney fits most of the clues (not spouse involved in politics). I agree, it would be a horrible pick that would alieniate completely all of Sanders base and a lot of Clinton’s and Obama’s base. Not genius at all.
@DD “I agree, it would be a horrible pick that would alieniate completely all of Sanders base and a lot of Clinton’s and Obama’s base. Not genius at all.”
The assumption that lots of Republicans would cross over and vote for a Clinton-Romney ticket is specious at best. All that would happen is that Romney would be ex-communicated (figuratively speaking) from the GOP as the ultimate RINO.
The recipe for a sure-thing Hillary win is to shore up the black and hispanic/latino votes. In fact, if she can increase hispanic/latino turnout from ~50% up to ~65% and get 80% of them to vote for her, she’ll have a landslide victory. She’ll even get Texas.
Considering Trump’s recent racist rhetoric, this could be her easiest path to victory. She could even nominate someone relatively unknown, like Judge Curiel, and that portion of the electorate would explode… landslide.
Colin Powel
DD: My ‘genius’ candidate is a current officeholder.
Another clue: Publicly a strong supporter of LGBT rights.
.
Rather confused. I’m not seeing where El Som said this person’s spouse is involved in politics.
Kerry?
Hillary Clinton should keep VP Joe Biden
