In case you missed it…

Clinton-Kaine’s first joint appearance as a ticket. I know many are disappointed, or think Kaine is boring. If you do feel that way, watch the speech. Just watch it. I think your opinion will be changed dramatically.

Kaine is a personable and engaging speaker. His problems lie elsewhere.

  2. Jason330 says:

I’m in. He is like the Catholics in my family. (Like Catholics in America befor they were hoodwinked by the pro life industrial complex). Social justice liberals.

  3. Delaware Dem says:

Kaine was the finalist with Biden for Obamas VP pick eight years ago. The speech today made me upset that Obama did not pick Kaine eight years ago. And I love Biden.

  4. Delaware Dem says:

Maybe that is why I like Kaine. I am a social justice liberal. Catholic too.

Kaine was not my first choice here, but this reminds me of why I was a supporter (via dKos) when he ran for Governor back on 2005. It was a longshot run by someone who was very centrist, but who was still committed to social justice.

This was a great intro. The commitment to social justice is still there, as is some economic justice by someone who isn’t going to turn into Bane in a couple of months. The crowd clearly enjoyed him and if you were looking at Hillary, she was relaxed and delighted. I’m in too.

Everybody’s in after one speech? Trust but verify. I’d like to hear more on the economic themes. It was a good speech though. I guess every elected Democrat has some DINO baggage somewhere.

Before anyone starts telling me Kaine now opposes TPP, here is the entire source of that belief. It is a slim reed:

Kaine spokeswoman Amy Dudley said Saturday that the Virginia Democrat shared his negative views on the trade deal with Clinton this week, confirming a report by The Washington Post. “He agreed with her judgment that it fell short” when it came to protecting wages and national security, a Clinton aide reportedly told the newspaper.

Kaine had never taken a formal position on the pact, but as recently as Thursday told reporters he saw much in the agreement that he liked, while continuing to express concerns about other provisions, including the handling of investment disputes.

We are being set up for a “I never campaigned against the TPP” moment (remember the public option?) If he really is opposed to TPP let him say it himself in his stump speech, in English and Spanish. It would be a great selling point.

” I am a social justice liberal. Catholic too.”

Not that it matters, but I admit I am socially liberal and a Catholic as well.

I lived in Virginia during much of Kaine’s political career. He never struck me as a politician or rather a career politician. He was just a pretty average person who spent a lot of time with his family, sang in the choir at church, lived in a neighborhood as one of those fairly nice guy neighbors. Generally being an average person, because that’s what he really is, not because it’s politically smart. Further, he has personal beliefs that are contrary to the law, but diligently defends the law when it comes to women’s choice. Call him center left or whatever, he is certainly no progressive, but then, neither is America.

  9. Dana Garrett says:

I didn’t know much about his public persona. I watched the speech and was quite impressed with him. He was interesting, knowledgeable, compassionate, and seemed quite genuine. I don’t get the claim how he is boring. He wasn’t yesterday. His story about the professor who survived the Holocaust but was murdered saving his students at the university shooting was moving and made all the more moving because it clearly touched Kaine’s emotions. I like people who care and are unafraid to show that they do.

  10. Jason330 says:

Puck – yes after one speech. My dislike of Kaine was built on a flimsier base than my fondness for that speech.

  11. puck says:

OK, I am in for Kaine; he is a good campaigner and will help Trump lose and I suppose that is the most we can achieve this election. But if TPP is implemented there should be a primary in 2020, and no bitching about purists. TPP has the potential to erase any good Hillary achieves.

The funny thing about TPP is it will probably give the economy a sugar rush and an equities boom and it will look like success at first, just like NAFTA. I may even benefit. So my opposition to TPP is more for my children and for the future of the country.

  12. Tom Kline says:

The way Hillary looks at Kane I think she’s doing him. Could be interesting to watch play out.
