A couple of last thoughts about the Peach Festival
It was fun going around the Peach Festival shooting videos. Which, by the way is pretty easy. So if you see a candidate, you are hereby deputized as a DL reporter. Just get someone to hold the camera sideways and keep the video to around 2 minutes so you can text it to us.
Now then. Here are some things I wish I had asked, and some surly volunteers who didn’t like me.
Questions I wish I’d have asked:
Hans Reigles (SP?)– Which candidate did you support for the GOP nomination? He kept not understanding what I was asking about what kind of Republican he was, or he was just slippery. That would have nailed it down. I also wish I had asked Hans, “What will you do for business owners like myself who think taxes are too low?”
Bethany Hall-Long – What’s the “democratic” approach to being Lt. Governor? This is my standby question for Dems running for stuff because it sounds easy but reveals a lot, and I’m sick that I missed a chance to ask have asked BHL that.
Best and worst Volunteers:
The best was Kevin Hensley. As previously mentioned, the icy cold towel was genius. Honorable mention was an excited old guy volunteering for Hans Reigles (sp?) who as impressed with my mad interview skilz. When we wrapped up he said, “That was great where will be able to see it?” When I said “Delaware Liberal” his face melted into a cartoon sad face. I will always treasure that memory.
The worst were John Carney volunteers. To their credit they let in the reality that is was a pretty crappy way to spend the day, but they were smug and surly when I asked about an interview. Actually, thinking I was talking to some smug and surly looking Rick Griffiths volunteers, I asked “Where’s the candidate?” and they said “He has a family emergency.” A little while later I asked “Where’s Congressman Carney?” and they said, “He has a family emergency.”
I was like – “They both had a family emergency today!?” Then they really ratcheted up the surly, explaining to me, like I was the idiot, that they were Carney volunteers. Well excuuuuse me. Just because you are sitting there with Carney T-shirts on under a big John Carney banner, I guess it never occurred to me that the Governor-elect would have such surly looking volunteers.
Close second for the worst were Kathy McGuinness volunteers. Smug and surly but without the edge of being part of a cakewalk, and still be forced to sit through this crap.
People I wish I could have interviewed:
Ciro Poppiti: “What’s the Democratic approach and being Lt. Gov?” Ken Simpler: let’s face it his run for Governor has begun. Colin Bonini: I wanted to thank him for keeping that civil forfeiture issue alive and I’d ask him if he thinks there are too many cops in Leg Hall. Lacey Lafferty: If governor will she institute an “ability to change a car battery” test for prospective cabinet members?
Well, Carney’s father in law died (Quillen), so he did have a family emergency.
That’s pretty legit.
The question for Hans is “Have you decided who you are going to vote for in the presidential election?” or “Can you tell me which of Donald Trump’s policy proposals you are willing to vote against in the House of Representatives?”
Still, doesn’t excuse attitudes of campaign staff. Stop being surly.

Do you need medications?
Always So negative
I was there and thought the volunteers did a good job…walking in the blazing temps.
Try this- keep comments neutral or Positive ….really. Try it it will improve your blood pressure
I merely observe and report, thanks for your concern for my health though.
What the main reason that some volunteers didn’t like what he said? BASICALLY SOUNDS LEGIT.
there is quite a lot that needed to be done
I certainly understand surliness, and I don’t mind it. Smugness… I have to admit, that drives me a little nuts.
Thus far, Simpler has managed to obey the rule “first do no harm.” He is likely to a be popular candidate for governor in the future. The Democratic Party needs to have a up and comer to be able to challenge him.
The Dem bench isn’t a problem. Someone I like for a statewide office in the future is Sean Lynn.
The only way a Republican gets elected governor in my lifetime is if the Democrats put an inept Sherman Tribbitt clone in office. Even then, Ruth Ann Minner, who is as close to Sherman Tribbitt as you could get, won a second term easily.
