UD Poll: Markell, Denn, Coons, Carper, Carney and Simpler all viewed favorably
The UD Poll has released further results on the standings of our current elected officials, and the results are good across the board. Voters view Senator Tom Carper favorably by a margin of 64-17; Governor Jack Markell 62-25; Congressman Carney and 2016 Democratic nominee for Governor John Carney 59-18; Senator Christopher Coons 56-25; Attorney General Matt Denn 47-16; and State Treasurer Ken Simpler 34-10.
Candidates like Carper and Carney, who have been winning elections for decades, are both well-liked and well-known. About 80 percent of voters recognized them enough to register an opinion. Younger candidates in less prominent positions have less name recognition, but they are generally liked among those who know them. Only 44 percent of respondents gave an opinion on Simpler — the only Republican in the poll and the newest to the political scene — but more than three-quarters of them gave him a favorable opinion.
Brewer said Denn, who jumped from lieutenant governor to AG last year, is steadily building positive name recognition. More respondents gave an opinion of him than in previous polls, and that opinion was positive by a margin of 47-16 percent.
“Politically at least, it looks like it was a good play to go to attorney general,” Brewer said.
Yes, it sets him up to run for Governor in 2024, or Senator in 2018 or 2020 should either Carper or Coons retire.
Simpler will never run in a presidential year, mark my words.
So, arguably the most “liberal” politicians (Coons, Markell) have the highest unfavorables.
Did you notice that?
The most liberal politician in this group is Matt Denn, and his unfavorability is 16, as as the more conservative Carper and Carney. So there goes your stupid theory.
The key number is recognition. Simpler isn’t at 50% yet. The 10% who disapprove represent the number of Democrats who recognize the name, while 34% is the number of hard-core Republicans who did.
Also remember that approval ratings rise when people aren’t hearing negative news or ads about a person. The GOP doesn’t even have enough money to run a negative ad against John Carney, and the rest aren’t running this cycle.
@JTF: The obvious explanation is that liberals are better known and more hated by the conservatives answering the poll.
By that logic, DelawareDem, then Ken Simpler is more popular because his negative is 10.
No one knows who the fuck Matt Denn is, relative to the others, if you actually look at the poll. And to be honest, I don’t know how liberal Matt Denn is or is not. On social issues? Sure. But I have zero idea what his views are on fiscal issues. Perhaps that’s my own oversight and happy to be proven wrong.
Sorry to burst your bubble but Delaware *really* isn’t as liberal as you guys delude yourselves into thinking. With the exception of Congressman Bryan Townsend, you guys can’t elect…
Oh wait.
Before I had seen the results, a fellow media person asked me who I thought would have the most favorable rating. I picked Denn. I was surprised to hear that the “winner” was Carper. Only response I could give was that I must be spending too damn much time inside the DL echo chamber.
Telling someone something they already know is not bubble bursting.
Carper is like Castle. He is everyone’s favorite old fart that has Jedi skills at bullshitting his way into making you think he really is on your side or fought for your position but did nothing of the sort.
The poll does make one thing clear, if no one ever points out the bullshit you are trying to pull, you get high approval ratings. Across the board. ‘Cause ‘murica.
@JTF: If Delaware were already liberal, there would be no need for a site called “Delaware Liberal.” I think what you are criticizing is their wishful thinking at election time.
SussexAnon is right about Good Ol’ Grandpa Carper. Hand out enough novelty checks at enough fire halls and your elections will be comfier than feather beds.
@Anon, hat would a negative ad run against John Carney even look like? “He is Ruth Ann’s next term!” (Ruth who?) “He’s mediocre! Fair to middling!! ” Nothing about Carney can stir up either positive of negative emotions.
Wonder why Wagner and KWS were left out?
These polls mean nothing…its just name recognition…..
Did these people see Tom Carper singing ‘she works hard for the money’ at the Hillary Clinton event a couple months ago? His numbers should be upside down..
lol. True dat
“These polls mean nothing…its just name recognition”
Which is it? Name recognition means a lot. Even the newspaper managed to get that right. If you like Denn, a bump up in name recognition is very good news. If you fear a future Gov. Simpler, his low name recognition is likewise good news.
Give them information about them and the numbers will plummet….tell them Carper has taken millions upon millions from the big banks over 18 years, voted to make it harder to declare bankruptcy, and then ask the questions….
“.tell them Carper has taken millions upon millions from the big banks over 18 years, voted to make it harder to declare bankruptcy”
@chris
Joe Biden supported all of those things, and yet there are those here who love him.
A lot of Delawareans get their paycheck from those big banks. They are in favor of the consumer bankruptcy repeal, and they are in favor of the big banks rewarding Carper for his service. A lot of Delaware bank employees work in consumer fraud or collections departments. Ask any of them what they think about consumer debtors . Very few in Delaware will support politicians who stick up for the little guy.
And look up the Cato Institute. Our OVERPAID Governor, received a “D” on his report card. WHAT A JOKE. UD pool should be ashamed!
Wagner prob wasn’t polled because nobody will take on that career politician at this point
The Ds like Tom Wagner in that job. He won’t rock any boats. If they feared the guy would move up, he would have been taken out many years ago.
Where am i on the list?!?
“Wagner prob wasn’t polled because nobody will take on that career politician at this point”
That’s a laugh. So-called “Auditor” Tom Wagner is hardly invincible, especially since his mortgage fiasco. No. Chris is right. Tom Wagner serves at the pleasure of Tom Carper.
TOA: If we wanted to know what right-wing “think” tanks thought, we’d read it there. Why don’t you find one of the millions of blogs written (in crayon) for your own kind?
