It’s both. Trump has opened the door extraordinarily wide for these messages. However, the Clinton team has artfully not exploited the situation and delivered powerful messages with its ads.
By the way, the Khans are “American” heroes. Trump is a traitor.
Im not sure when the shift happened, but Clinton has, since the convention, become VERY good at running for office. I dont think she was in the primary, or in 08.
From her jujitsu-jedi style at the debates that made Trump lose it earlier and earlier each time, to her routine at the Smith diner last night (btw, it sounded like Obama wrote a lot of those lines…. not saying that is a bad thing.. it was awesome to watch) I think she has adapted in a great way and is taking cues from the right people. Once she wins, her natural abilities will be able to shine through.
I thought you were engaging in your patented DD hyperbole in declaring it the “the most powerful ad I’ve ever seen”…
But you were not… That is the finest spot Ive ever seen as well. It surpasses the “Run, Joe”, which tugged at my heart strings for personal reasons as well as others… But this is masterful, tasteful, dignified… I could go on and on.
I get that this ad is nicely done, but I don’t get it. I mean… who is this ad for? Where are they running it, and why? There is nothing new about it. The depth of emotion has been dealt with previously on the stage of the DNC. I don’t know. It seems a little over the top to me I guess.
But i also felt that way about the “Run, Joe” ad that Prop Joe liked, so I guess I am an outlier.
Jason… I understand your point/position. When I view those ads, I try and view them, as much as is possible, outside of the political calculations of the ad and more so towards the emotional impact/resonance.
Most of us willingly spend an obscene amount of time consuming and digesting political news and political media. I think that leads to a cynicism in how we interpret and ingest ads and such.
“Clinton has, since the convention, become VERY good at running for office.”
I have been fascinated at the Clinton’s team ability to seemingly seize every opportunity with which they are presented, turning them into such professional ads that it looks like they have been planned for months.
I don’t know who the heck is running that team, but honestly, it’s a freaking machine. Her jokes at the Al Smith dinner were spot on (Lady Liberty is a 4, maybe a 5 is she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair). Who is writing this stuff?
P.S. The ad tells me that the Khans are real Americans and Trump is not. It’s not new but it perpetuates the narrative that we don’t want Trump’s America. Or to put more simply, it’s another nail in the coffin.
Of course I also see it as unnecessary, but I’m guessing with all that talent the team is just showboating at this point.
The entire Clinton ad team is worth double the money they are being paid. They are amazing. So many great ads – this one and “Mirrors.”
Khizr Khan is one of my favorite ever political figures. I will never forget his speech: “You have sacrificed nothing! And no one.” And of course the all-time classic: “Have you even read the Constitution? I will gladly lend you mine.”
These ads are intended to help Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.
Basically it takes all the deplorables and stuffs them in a deplorable bag.
I thought her bullies ad was great…all those movie bullies juxaposed with Trump clips. And then the little kid talking about getting bullied and showing Hillary being kind to her. Any ad that takes the wind out of the HIllary is the Devil sails is what they need to be running at this point. All the GOP messaging is about how evil Hillary is, not how great Trump is. They know that ship is sunk. Their only hope is to paint Hillary as horrid and horrible. Any ad that dispels that image is what is necessary in the coming weeks.
I can’t tell if Hillary’s media team is the best or if Trump is the worst. It could be both.

In many ways, Trump has been the perfect candidate to run against for her. It allows who she really is to shine through.

Gotta agree with the capo of East Baltimore. I expected it to be exaggerated click bait. It certainly is not that. Heavy shit.
LOL to you both Dorian and Joe. Yes, I do have a Boy Who Cried Wolf problem sometimes.
Just watched it again. Tears.

@J “I get that this ad is nicely done, but I don’t get it. I mean… who is this ad for? ”
It’s anti-islamophbia.
It’s anti-xenophobia.
It’s anti-religious discrimination.
These ads are intended to help Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.

I agree. Still, they’ve been presented with such low hanging fruit in the form of Trump and the GOP. Fish in a barrel and all that.
“…and stuffs them in a deplorable bag.”
You mean it doesn’t match the shoes?

Technically, by her supporting the war, didn’t Hillary send his son to his death?
